Introduc tion Congratulations on your select ion of this p roduct. T his label p rinter makes it pos sible for you to print adhesi ve labels for a wide variet y of applications, such as: name tags, cas sette tape labels, floppy disks, bin ders, and other app lications.
Part 1 Getting Acquainted This part of the man ual provides you with important information you need to know in order to use the label printer to its fu ll potential.
Important! Batteries can bu rst or leak and da mage your unit i f you use them the wrong wa y. Note the foll owing important point s. • Be sure t hat the plus (+) an d minus (–) sides of each battery are fac ing correctly. • Never mix batte ries of different type s • Never leave dea d batteries in the ba ttery compartment.
• If ther e is a cartridge alre ady in the label pri nter, remove it by graspi ng the cartridge on bo th sides with your thum b and fo refinger, and l ift straight up. 3. Remove the stop per from a new tape cartridge and che ck to see that the ta pe is ready to use.
About the SET UP menu The SET UP m enu lets you change various basic set tings quickly and ea sily. To displa y the SET UP menu, pres s FUNC and then FORM . Use u and i to move the highlighting to the item you want to sele ct and then press SET . Pre ss ESC to clear the SET UP menu withou t selecting anything.
Important! • You can produ ce a demo print when the text inp ut display is clear, imm ediately after turning po wer on only. Even if you input text and then dele te it, pressing PRINT will not produc e a demo print. • If you experie nce problems with pri nting, check your tape cartridge and powe r supply, and try again.
Manual feed indi cator This indica tor appears when you a re using manual feed instead of auto feed. Auto feed is in effect when thi s indicator is not o n the display. Important! After you fini sh printing when using m anual feed, be sure t o always press FUNC and then PRINT (FEED) to feed the tape before cutting it.
See page E-25 for a complete list o f symbols, dingbats, and characters th at are available from ea ch menu. Inputting Illustratio ns Your label printer gives you a choice of 50 illustrations t hat you can use in your labels. To input illustrations 1.
1. Press FUNC and then ILLUST (USER CHR). 2. Use u and i to move the highl ighting to ”DELETE” a nd then press SET . 3. Use t and y to select the user character you want and th en press SET . 4. Press SET to delete the se lected character or ESC to a bort without deleting anythin g.

∑ Continued use of th e unit when smoke or a strange odor is c oming from it creates the danger of electrical shock . Immediately turn p ower off and unplug the power cord fro m the wall outlet.
Water and other fo reign matter ∑ Never allow coffee, juice, or other drinks, or flow er vases to spill on the unit. Liquid s pilled on the unit c reates the danger of fire and electrical shock. Should liqu id ever spill onto t he unit, immedia tely turn off power and unplug the power cord from the wall socket.

∑ Never try to take t he label printer apa rt or attempt your o wn maintenance. ∑ Do not drop your label printer and avoid strong impact. ∑ Do not pull on the tape or try to force it back into the label printer. ∑ Never operate the t ape cutter lever whe n a tape cartrid ge is not loaded in the label printer.
∑ Be sure to grasp th e plug of the AC ada ptor cord when d isconnecting it. Never pull on the cord. Loading/Replacing Batt eries A handy low batter y power indicator le ts you know when battery power is getting too low for proper operation.
RECALL” appears on the display. Pressi ng SET when this mes sage is on the display recalls th e text that was on t he screen when you l ast turned off power.
7. Use a pencil or some other thin object to take up slack in the ink ribbon as shown in the illustration. Note that the tap e does not move at this time. ∑ If the ink ribbon is slack when you load it into the label printer, it can break or cause some other problem.
The label printer is equipped with sound capab ilities that signal when power is turned on and w hen an illegal opera tion is attempte d. Normally, sound a re turned on whenever you turn power on, but you can use the followin g procedure to turn the sound on and off.
Important! You can input up to 255 characters per labe l. Further input becomes impossible after y ou input the 255th c haracter. Display Symbols an d Indicators Before getting into actual input, you shou ld first become acquainted with the symbols and indica tors used on the lab el printer displ ay.
This mark separates two blocks on the screen. Return symbol () The return symbol indicates a newline oper ation. Character style in dicators These indicators point to the characte r effect that is assigned to the character where th e cursor is currentl y located.

See page E-25 for a complete list of i llustrations that ar e available. User Characters You can create up to four user charact ers and store them i n memory. You can create a character from scratch, or yo u can use an existin g character or symbol as a basis for creating a new character.
4. Use the user character drawing techniqu es described to edit the character you want , and then press SET . 5. Continue from step 7 under ”To create a user character usin g an existing character”.

Part 5 Character Attrib utes and Text Effect s The operati ons in this part of t he manual explain how to c hange fonts an d character styles. T hese characteristics are called ”c haracter attribut es”. It also tells you how to assign s uch text effects as un derlining, shadi ng, and box print ing to text.
To find out current f ont settings Use the t and y cursor keys to move th e cursor around the di splay. The font i ndicator shows the curren t font setting for t he character where t he c ursor is located. Character Style s There are fi ve character styles: normal, bold, outline, s hadow, and raised.

Small Typeface • The n ormal size for the s mall typeface is 1 ∞ 1 (16 ∞ 16 dots; 2mm ∞ 2mm). 8 ∞ 16 dots matrix is used to form alph a-numeric characters and symbols. • Charac ter size can be ch anged by specifying a verti cal factor (1, 2, 3, 4) and a horizontal f actor (1, 2, 3, 4 , 5, 6, 7, 8).

Fundamentals of Label Lay out Before we actually be gin our discussio n about how to layout a tape, we should first define a few terms . Note the following.

MANUAL This setting p rovides side spaces of only 1mm of the printed text. If you perform two consecu tive print operations (without man ua lly feeding between prints), the last characte r of the first p rint operation is fo llowed by the first ch aracter of the seco nd print operation, with no space pro vide d between them.
To show the imag e display 1. After laying out t he label you plan t o print, press IMAGE . • The i mage on the dis play scrolls from right to left. 2. To stop t he image from scrolling and freez e the current cont ents on the disp lay, press SET . 3.
LAYO UT The preset l ayouts provide a total of 74 l abel templates tha t you can use to create att ractive labels qui ckly and easily. Each template is made up of ”elements” whose contents you can use as they are o r change to some thing else. You can even store complet ed labels in me mory for instant r ecall when you need them.
• T o print the label witho ut making any change s, perform the pr ocedure starting from step 6 under ”To use a prese t layout to cre ate a label and print it ”. To delete a preset layout label fro m memory 1. Wh ile the LAYOUT m enu is on the di splay, use u and i to move t he highlighting to ”D ELETE” and then press SET .
