6 Chapter 1: Getting Started Welcome Congratulations on purchasing your Pocket PC. Its compact size and powerful features and functions let you keep your most important business and personal information up-to-date and close at hand.
7 Chapter 2: Basic Skills Learning to use your Pocket PC is easy . This chapter describes the basic concepts of using and customizing your Pocket PC. Hardware Buttons and Stylus Y our Pocket PC has hardw are buttons that control actions and scroll functions, and a stylus f or selecting items and entering information.
8 Y ou may see the foll o wing status icons on the command bar or on the n a vi g a ti o n ba r . If more notification icons need to be displayed than there is room to display them, the Notification icon, , will display . T a p the icon to vie w all notification icons.

10 Navigation Bar and Command Bar The navigation bar is located at the top of the screen. It displays the acti ve program and current time, and allows y ou to switch to pro grams and close screens. Use the command bar at the bottom of the screen to perform tasks in programs.
11 Pop-up Menus W ith pop-up menus, you can quickly choose an action for an item. For example, you can use the pop-up menu in the contact list to quickly delete a contact, make a copy of a contact, or send an e- mail message to a contact. The actions in the pop-up menus v ary from program to program.
12 T yping Using the Input Panel Use the input panel to enter information in any program on your Pocket PC. Y ou can either type using the onscreen keyboard or write using Letter Recognizer , Block Recognizer , or T ramscriber . In either case, the characters appear as typed text on the screen.
13 T o use Letter Recognizer: W ith Letter Recognizer you can write letters using the stylus just as you would on paper . 1. T ap the arro w next to the Input P anel button and then Letter Recognizer . 2. Write a letter in the box. When you write a letter , it is conv erted to typed text that appears on the screen.
14 Writing on the Scr een In any program that accepts writing, such as the Notes program and the Notes tab in Calendar , Contacts, and T asks, you can use your stylus to write directly on the screen. Write the w a y you do on paper . Y ou can edit and format what you ’ ve written and con vert the information to text at a later time.
15 T o con vert writing to text Ta p T ools and then Recognize . If you want to con vert only certain words, select them before tapping Reco gnize on the T ools menu (or tap and hold the selected words and then tap Recognize on the pop-up menu). If a word is not recognized, it is left as writing.
16 T ips for getting good recognition • Write neatly . • Write on the lines and draw descenders belo w the line. Write the cross of the “ t ” and apostrophes belo w the top line so tha t they are not confused with the w ord above. Wr ite periods and commas above the line.
17 T o select a drawing If you want to edit or format a drawing , you m ust select it first. • T ap and hold the stylus on the drawing until the selection handle appears. T o select multiple drawings, deselect the Pen button and then drag to select the drawings you want.
18 Using My T ext When using Inbox or MSN Messenger , use My T ext to quickly insert preset or frequently used messages into the text entry area. T o insert a message, tap My T ext and tap a message. Tap to select a prewritten message. Y ou can add text after inserting a My T ext message before sending it.
19 Find and Organize Information The Find feature on your Pocket PC helps you quickly locate information. • On the menu, tap Find . Enter the text you w ant to find, select a data type, and then tap Go to start the search. T o quickly f ind infor mation that is taking up storage space on your Pocket PC, select Larger than 64 KB in T ype .
20 Adding or Removing Pr ograms Programs added to your de vice a t the factory are stored in R OM (read-only memory). Y ou cannot remove this softw are, and you ’ ll never accidentally lose R OM contents. R OM programs can be updated using special installation programs with a *.
21 T o add a prog ram to the Start menu Ta p , Settings , Menus , the Start Menu tab, and then the check box for the program. If you do not see the program listed, you can either use File Explorer on .
22 Chapter 3: Microsoft ActiveSync Using Microsoft ® Acti veSync ® , you can synchr onize the information on your desktop computer with the information on your Pocket PC. Synchronization compares the data on your Pocket PC with your desktop computer and updates both computers with the most recent information.
23 Once you hav e set up Acti veSync and completed the first sync hronization process, you can initiate synchronization from your Pocket PC. T o switch to ActiveSync on your P ocket PC, tap , and then tap ActiveSync . Note that if you hav e a wir eless LAN card, you can synchronize remotely from your de vice.
24 Chapter 4: Microsoft Pocket Outlook Microsoft ® Pocket Outlook includes Calendar , Contacts, T asks, Inbox, and Notes. Y ou can use these programs individually or to g ether . For example, e-mail addresses stored in Contacts can be used to address e-mail messages in Inbox.
25 T o create an appointment 1. If you are in Day or W eek view , tap the desired date and time for the appointment. 2. T ap New . Tap to choose from previously entered locations. Tap to choose from predefined text. Notes is a good place for maps and directions.
26 Using the Summary Scr een When you tap an appointment in Calendar , a summary screen is displayed. T o change the appointment, tap Edit . View appointment details. View. Tap to change appointment. Creating Meeting Requests Y ou can use Calendar to set up meetings with users of Outlook or Pocket Outlook.
27 Contacts: T racking Friends and Colleagues Contacts maintains a list of your friends and colleagues so that you can easily find the information you ’ r e looking for , whether you ’ r e at home or on the road. Using the Pocket PC infrared (IR) port, you can quickly share Contacts information with other Pocket PC users.
28 3. T o assign the contact to a category , scroll to and tap Categories and select a cate gory from the list. In the contact list, you can display contacts by cate gory . 4. T o add notes, tap the Notes tab. Y ou can enter te xt, draw , or create a recording.
29 T asks: Keeping a T o Do List Use T asks to keep track of what you hav e to do. Select the sort order of the list. Indicates high priority. Tap and hold to display a pop-up menu of actions. Tap to display or edit the task details. Select the category of tasks you want displayed in the list.
30 5. T o add notes, tap the Notes tab. Y ou can enter te xt, draw , or create a recording. For more information on creating notes, see “ Notes: Capturing Thoughts and Ideas ” later in this chapter . 6. When finished , tap OK to return to the task list.
31 T o create a note 1. T ap New . 2. Create your note by writing, drawing, typing, and recording. For more information about using the input panel, writing and drawing on the screen, and creating recor dings, see Chapter 2. Tap to show or hide the input panel.
32 Connecting Dir ectly to an E-mail Server In addition to synchronizing e-mail messages with your desktop computer , you can send and receiv e e-mail messages by connecting to an e-mail server using a modem or network card connected to your Pocket PC.
33 When you receiv e a message, tap it in the list to open it. Unread messages are displayed in bold. Tap delete this message. Tap to view the previous or next message.
34 Composing E-mail Messages T o compose an e-mail message 1. T ap New . 2. In the To field, enter an e-mail address of one or more recipients, separating them with a semicolon, or select a name from the contact list by tapping the Addr ess Book button.
35 Folder beha vior with a direct connection to an e-mail ser ver The behavior of the folders you create depends on whether you are using ActiveSync, POP3, or IMAP4. • If you use ActiveSync, e-mail messa ges in the Inbox folder in Outlook will automatically be synchronized with your device.
36 Chapter 5: Companion Programs The companion programs consist of Microsoft ® Pocket W ord, Microsoft ® Pock et Excel, W indows Media™ Player for Pocket PC, and Microsoft ® Reader . T o switch to a companion program on your Pocket PC, tap Pr o grams on the menu, and then tap the program name.
37 Y ou can enter information in Pocket W ord in one of four modes (typing, writing, drawing, and recording), which are displayed on the Vi e w menu. Each mode has its own toolbar , which you can show and hide by tapping the Show/Hide T oolbar b utton on the command bar.
38 Writing Mode In writing mode, use your stylus to write directly on the screen. Ruled lines are displayed as a guide, and the zoom magnif ication is greater than in typing mode to allow you to write more easily . For more informa tion on wr iting and selecting writing, see Chapter 2.
39 Drawing Mode In drawing mode, use your stylus to dra w on the screen. Gridlines appear as guides. When you lift your stylus off the screen after the f irst stroke, you ’ ll see a drawing box indicating the boundaries of the drawing. Every subsequent stroke within or touching the drawing box becomes part of the drawing.
40 Pocket Excel Pocket Excel works with Microsoft Excel on your desktop computer to give you easy access to copies of your workbooks. Y ou can create new w orkbooks on your Pocket PC, or you can copy workbooks from your desktop computer to your Pocket PC.
41 Tips f or W orking in Pocket Excel Note the following when working in lar ge worksheets in Pocket Excel. • V iew in full-screen mode to see as much of your w orksheet as possible. T ap Vie w and then Full Screen . T o exit full-screen mode, tap Restor e .
42 Windows Media Player for Pocket PC Use Microsoft Windo ws Media Player for Pocket PC to play digital audio and video files that are stored on your Pocket PC or on a network. T o switch to W indo ws Media Pla yer for Pocket PC, tap , Pro grams , and then tap Windows Media .
43 Microsoft Reader Use Microsoft Reader to read eBooks on your device. Do wnload books to your desktop computer from your fa vorite eBook W eb site. Then, use Acti veSync to copy the book files to your acti vated device. The books appear in the Reader Library , where you can tap them in the list to open them.
44 Reading a Book Each book consists of a cover pa g e, an optional table of contents, and the pages of the book. Navigation options are listed in the bottom portion of the co ver page. The first time you open a book, you ’ ll probably want to go to the f irst page or to the table of contents, if there is one.
45 Using Reader F eatures Reading a book electronically gi ves you se veral options not av ailable with pa per books. These options are available from any book page. Select text by dragging across the te xt on the page. Then, tap an option on the pop-up menu, as described below .
46 Chapter 6: MSN Messenger MSN ® Messenger on your Pocket PC is an instant messaging program that lets you: • See who is online. • Send and receiv e instant messages. • Hav e instant message conversa tions with gr oups of contacts. T o use MSN Messenger, you must ha ve a Microsoft Passport ™ account or a Microsoft Exchange e-mail account.
47 T o see others online without being seen, in the T ools menu, tap My Status and select A ppear Offline . If you block a contact, you will appear offline b ut will remain on the blocked contact ’ s list. T o unblock a contact, tap and hold the contact, then tap Unblock on the pop-up menu.
48 Chapter 7: Pocket Internet Explorer Use Microsofot ® Pocket Internet Explorer to vie w W eb or W AP pages in either of the following two ways. • During synchronization with your desktop computer.
49 If you did not specify an update schedule in step 3, you will need to manually download content to keep the information updated on your desktop computer and Pocket PC. Before synchronizing with your Pocket PC, in Internet Explorer on your desktop computer , click T ools and then Synchronize .
50 Using Pocket Internet Explorer Y ou can use Pocket Internet Explorer to bro wse mobile favorites and c hannels that have been downloaded to your Pock et PC without connecting to the Internet. Y ou can also connect to the Internet through an ISP or a network connection and bro wse the W eb.
51 T o browse the Inter net: 1. Set up a connection to your ISP or corporate network using Connections , as described in Chapter 8. 2. T o connect and start browsing, do one of the following: • T ap the Favorites b utton, and then tap the fav orite you want to view .
52 Chapter 8: Getting Connected Y ou can use your Pocket PC to exchange inf ormation with other Pocket PCs as well as your desktop computer , a network, or the Internet. Y ou have the follo wing connection options. • Use the infrared (IR) port on your de vice to send and receive f iles between two devices.
53 3. T ap and hold the item, and tap Beam Item on the pop-up menu. Y ou can also send items, but not folders, from File Explorer . T ap and hold the item you want to send, and then tap Beam File on the pop-up menu. T o recei ve information 1. Align the IR ports so that they are unobstructed and within a close range.
54 7. Y ou should not need to change any settings in Ad vanced . Most ISPs now use a d ynamically- assigned address. If the ISP you are connecting to does not use a dynamically-assigned address, tap Advanced and then the TCP/IP tab, and enter the address.
55 T o create a modem connection to a netw ork: 1. Get the follo wing information from your network administrator: dial-up access telephone number , user name, password, domain name, and TCP/IP settings. 2. If your device does not ha ve a built-in modem, install a modem card.
56 T o create an Ether net connection to a network: 1. Y ou do not need to create a ne w connection on your Pocket PC. Instead, you must purchase and configure an Ethernet card tha t is compa tible with your Pocket PC. 2. Get the follo wing information from your network administrator: user name, passw ord, and domain name.
57 T o set up an e-mail service: • In Inbox on your Pocket PC, tap Services , and then New Ser vice . Follow the directions in the New Service wizard. For an e xplanation of a screen, tap and then Help . When f inished , to connect to your e-mail server , tap Services and then Connect .
58 Appendix: T roubleshooting Reset the Pocket PC and clear memory T o reset the P ocket PC If your Pocket PC responds slo wly , stops responding as expected, or “freezes, ” try resetting it. A reset causes the Pocket PC to restart and re-adjust memory allocation.
59 Shorten auto-suspend time While on battery power , your Pocket PC automatically suspends operation if you hav en ’ t touched the hardware b uttons or used the stylus for a specified period . Maximiz e battery life by shortening the time. T ap and then Settings .
60 • In Internet Explorer options, delete all files and clear history . In Internet Explorer, tap T ools and then Options . T ap Delete Files and Clear History . • Remov e pr ograms you no longer use. T ap and then Settings . On the System tab, tap Remove Pr ograms .
61 Screen is hard to read If you ’ re having a hard time vie wing a document in Notes, try changing the size of the view . T o do this, tap a zoom percentage on the T ools menu. In Pocket W ord and Pocket Excel, on the Vie w menu, tap Zoom and then select a zoom percentage.
62 • For international calls, allo w more time for the call to go through. T ap and then Settings . On the Connections tab, tap Connections . Under The Internet settings or W ork settings, select your setting and tap Modify . T ap your connection and tap Next twice.
63 Cable and cradle connection problems The following solutions may help if you encounter problems when connecting to your desktop computer . Additional troubleshooting information is av ailable in Connections Help on the Pocket PC and Activ eSync Help on the desktop computer.
