5 Setup Disc Contents Install the following software n ecessa ry for using the scanner from the supplied Setup Disc. • CaptureOnTouch This is a dedicated scanning application fo r this product. • CapturePerfect 3.1 This is a scanning application for the DR series scanner.
6 STEP 2 Installing the Software System requirements To use the scanner, your computer must satisfy the following system requirements. Comput er CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66GHz or faster Memory: 1 GB or more Hard disk: 3 GB or more available space required for installation of all software USB interface: Hi-Speed USB2.
7 Software Installation IMPORTANT • Install the software before connecting the scanner to the computer. • Log on to Windows as an Administrator. • Close all other applications before installing the software. 1 Insert the Setup Disc into the DVD drive of the computer.
8 4 Follow the instructions on the scre en to complete installa tion. 5 Click [Exit] to finish installing the software. IMPORTANT • Install the software before connecting the scanne r to the computer. • Close all other applications before installing the software.

10 STEP 3 Connecting to a Computer Connect the scanner to the computer and th e power supply. IMPORTANT • Do not connect the scanner to the computer befo re installing the software. • Before connecting the scanner to th e computer, verify that the power of t he scanner is OFF.
11 STEP 4 Turning the Power ON The power of the scanner can be turned ON and OFF with the power button on the front of the scanner. 1 Make sure that the scan ner and compu ter are connected properly. 2 Press the power button. The power button lights blue when the power turns ON.

15 Before Using the Scanner Important Safety Instructions To ensure the safe operation of this scanne r, be sure to read the safety warnings and precautions described below. Installation Location The performance of this scanner is affected by the environmen t in which it is installed.
16 Moving the Scanner ● When moving the scanner, always hold it with both hands to avoid dropping it. ● Make sure to disconnect the interface cable and AC adapter befo re moving the scanner. If the scanner is tran sported with these items connected, the plugs and connectors may be damaged.
17 ● When unplugging the power cord, gra sp it firmly by its plug. Do not pull directly on the power cord, as this may damage or expose the cord’s internal wiring, resulti ng in a fire or electric shock. ● Leave sufficient space around the pow er plug so that it can be unplugged easily.
18 Features of the Scanner The main features of the DR-M160II document scanner are described below. ● Compact D esign The scanner has a compact size of 280 mm (11.02")(W) x 250 mm (9.84")(D) x 230 mm (9.06")(H) wh e n the document feed is closed.
19 ● Prescan Function The scanner is equipped with a Presc an function that allows you to adjust the contrast and brightne ss of a prescanned image and then send the adjusted image to the application software, w ithout needing to scan the document again.

23 Basic Operation Documents The scanner can scan documents rangi n g in size from business cards to LTR/A4. The document sizes that this scanner can scan are shown below. Plain Paper Size Width: 54 mm to 216 mm (2.12" to 8.5") Length: 50.8 mm to 356 mm (2" to 14") (You can scan documents up to 3,000 mm (118.
24 • Scanning the following types of documents can cause a paper jam or malfunction. To scan such a document, make a photocopy of the document and then scan the photocopy. Business Card Size: 50.8 mm x 85 mm (2" x 3.35") or larger Paper thickness: 380 g/m 2 (80 lb bond) 0.
25 How to Pla ce Documents Scanning multiple documents Standard p aper feeding should be u sed when scan ning multi ple documents of a stand ard size at one time. Standard paper feed ing enables multiple documents to be fed while separating each page.
26 4 Adjust the document guides to fit the width of the document to be sca nned. 5 Place the document. After placing the document, ali gn the document guides with both edges of the document. IMPORTANT • When placing documents into the feed tray, take care not to cut your hand on the edges of the pap er.
27 2 Place the document as described in the “Scanning multiple d ocumen ts” procedure on p. 25 . IMPORTANT When scanning multiple page documents that are fastened together, such as invoices, place the documents so that the edge that is fastened together is facing dow n.
28 Placing Thin Paper (Thin Paper Mode) When placing a document with th in paper, switch the mode of the scanner to thin paper mode. In thin paper mode, the placed document is fed in a manner that prevents it from being damaged. Thin paper mode switching is performed b y opening the scanner driver settings screen.
29 3 Select the [Thin Paper Mode] che ck box. 4 Click to close the dialog box. Placing Cards When scanning cards, switch the scanner to non separation mo de and then place one card at a time horizontally. 1 Switch the scanner to non separation mode. 2 Adjust the document guides to fit the width of the card to be scanned.
30 Placing Folded Documents Folio Scan enables you to scan document s that are larger than LTR/ A4 and therefore do not fit in the fee der. To use the function, fold the document in half lengthwise and place it into the feeder. T he DR- M160II will scan both sides and combine the scanned images into a single image.
31 3 Open the [Feeding] tab. 4 Select the [Non Separation Feeding Mode] check box. 5 Click the [OK] button to close the settings screen. 1 Opens the scanner driver's Detail Se ttings screen. (See p. 47) 2 Set the [Paper Size] to half the size of the document (or [Detect automatically] when scanning nonstandard document).
32 Setting the Long Document Mode The length of documents that c an b e scanned with the scanner is normally 356 mm (14"), but you can scan documents up to 3,000 mm (118.
33 2 Click [CANON DR-M160 USB] and click [Properties]. Scanner properties are disp layed. 3 Click the [Maintenance] tab, and then select a Long Document mode. Select [Long Document Mode (1000 mm)] or [Long Docu ment Mode (3000 mm)] depending on the length of the document.
34 Detecting a document double feed This scanner includes a function to detect document double feeds. By using this function, the scanner will automatically stop when it detects that multiple documents have been fed at the same time.
35 1 Opens the scanner driver's Detail Se ttings screen. (See p. 47) 2 Select the [Double Feed Detection] check box, and then select any one of [Detect b y Ultrasonic], [De tect by Length], and [Detect by Ultrasonic and Len gth]. 3 Click the [More] button when the Double Fee d Detection Ignore func tion is al so used .
36 When using the double feed detectio n ignore func tion If a document double feed is det ected during scanning, document feeding stops when the double fed do cuments are ejected. The following error code is displayed in the Job No. Indicator of the operating panel, and the DFR button lights.
37 Double Feed Retry When a double feed has occurred, this function returns the document to the document feeder and re-feeds the pages (double feed retry). It is necessary to first open the scanner driver settings screen, and then enable the ultrasonic double feed detection and the double feed retry functions.
38 Scanning methods Scanning with CaptureOnTouch What is CaptureOnTouch? CaptureOnTouch is a scanning a pplicat ion that allows you to scan a document with a simple operation by following the instructions on the screen. CaptureOnTouch is provided with mult iple scanning methods that can be selected according to the purpose and application.
39 Hint • You can also start CaptureOnTouch from the Start menu. Click [Start] – [All Programs] – [Canon DR-M160] – [DR-M160 CaptureOnTouch]. • When [Make CaptureOnTouch resident] is turned .
40 Restarting CaptureOnTouch To use CaptureOnTouch after it is no longer resident in the system, restart it by following the procedur e below. CaptureOnT ouch will start and become resident in the system again. • Click [Start] – [All Programs] – [Canon DR-M160] – [DR-M160 CaptureOnTouch].
41 3 Set the scan method in the top screen. A Specify whet her to enable continuous scanning. When scanning multiple documents as one scanned image or splitting up a large document to scan in parts, select [ON] to enable continuous scanning. B Specify whether to scan the doc ument in full auto mode.
42 5 Configure the settings relate d to output and then output the scanned imag es. A Configure the settin gs related to output. (See p. 49) B Click this butto n to output the scanned images. The button name differs for each output met hod. For example, it is [Save] when the output method is set to [Save to folder].
43 2 Enter the job name, and press the Enter key. Hint Job numbers up to 9 are added (i n numerical order) to the end of the set job name. By specifying t he job number with the operating panel, you can start scanning afte r pressing the operating panel button.
44 Hint • If you set [Enable continuous scanning] to [ON], you can continue to scan additional documents after all t he pages of the initial document are scanned. • If you set [Check output after scanning] to [ON], you can check the output settings after scanning.
45 Operating the scanner with the operating panel buttons You can start scanning by selecti ng a job from the scanner’s operating panel. 1 Set a job number every time a job is registered with CaptureOnTouch.
46 Setting Basic Items Scanner settings include the basic items that are configured in [Scanner Setting], and the setting item s that are configured in th e advanced settings dialog box. The settings in the advanced settings dialog box are applied for settings other than the basic items.
47 For details on the setting items, see the Help of the driver settings dialog box. Hint The driver settings dialog box incl udes setting items that are the same as the basic items in [Scanner S ettings], but the setting for each of the them is stored sep arate ly.
48 Operation in Continuous Scanning Screen If a document is scanned with eit her Scan First or Select Scan Job when [Enable continuous scanning] is set to [ON] in the Start screen, the Continuous Scanning screen appears when all of the pages of the placed document have been fed.
49 Setting the Ou tput Method CaptureOnTouch is provided with various output methods for processing scanned images. The output method specification is common to Scan First and Select Scan Job.
50 Other Output Methods In an environment in which Micros oft SharePoint Server has been introduced, you can send scanned images to a Microsoft SharePoint site. To do so, select [Save in Microsoft SharePoint] as the output method, and configure the setting fo r the image files to be sent.
51 Environmental Settings To configure the environmental set tings of CaptureOnTouch, open the [Environmental settings] dialog box. Click (CaptureOnTouch icon) in the taskbar, and select [Environmental settings] from the menu. The following describes the setting items of each tab displayed in the [Environmental settings] dialog box.
52 Maximum size of attached file Select the [Display confirmation me ssage if file size exceeds the above] check box to display a conf irmation message when an attached file exceeds th e maximum size. • For Scan First, a confirmation message appears if the file size of scanned images is larger than the file size set here.
53 Click [Preferences] from the [C aptureOnTouch DR-M160] menu while the main screen of CaptureOnTouch is displayed. The following describes the setting items of each tab displayed in the [Environmental Settings] dialog box. [Basic settings] Tab On the [Basic settings] tab, configure the following settings.
54 [Theme] Tab On the [Theme] tab, specify the appearance of the main screen of CaptureOnTouch. Select theme Specify the appearance type for the main screen of CaptureOnTouch with [Select theme]. [Plugin] Tab On the [Plugin] tab, confirm the plugins that have been added to CaptureOnTouch.
55 Scanning with CapturePerfect Scanning with CapturePerfect This section describes procedures from launching CapturePerfect to selecting a scanner, as well as pr ocedures for scanning with the [Scan batch to file] function. See the “CapturePerfect Operatin g Guide” or help for details.
56 6 Configure the scann ing conditi ons. (See p. 57) 7 Place the document. (See p. 25) 8 Click [Scan Batch to File] in the [Scan] menu. 9 Configure the save destination, the n ame of the file to be saved and the file format, and then cl ick [Save] to start scanning.
57 Setting the Scanner Driver When you scan a document in an ISIS compatible (CapturePerfect, etc.) or TWAIN compatible applic ation, open the scanner driver and configure the scanning condi tions and other settings. This section describes the con figur ation and functions of the scanner drive r.
58 In addition, you can also click [Ga mma] and set the gamma correction value for scanned images. [Image processi ng] tab Set the processing method for scanned images. [Feeding] tab Specify scanner operations related to document feeding. [Others] tab Configure special scan method and image processing settings.
59 When the scanner driver is opened from CaptureOnTouch, the following settings screen of the scanner driver appears. Hint When the Advanced Settings screen is c alled from some applications, the Advanced Settings screen may have the S imple mode and Advanced mode.
60 Setting Basic Sc anning Conditions This section provides an overview of the basic setting items that are the minimum requirements when c onfiguring the scanner settings.
61 Dots per i nch Select the scanning resolution. • Higher resolutions provide clearer im ages but r esult in larger file sizes and slower scanning. • When [Detect automatically] is speci fied, the resolution is detected automatically from the content printed in the documen t.
62 Color mod e Select the scanning mode. • [Advanced Text Enhancement II] removes or processes the background color and background surroun ding text to enhance the text for easy reading. • [Detect automatically] detects whether a document is color, grayscale, or black and white bas ed on its content.
63 Scanning Documents of Unregistered Page Sizes You can register a non-standar d page size that has not been registered as a page size by naming and register ing it as a custom page size in the Custom Paper Size dialog box, which is opened from the [Save] button on the [Basic] tab.
64 Configuring Scanner Settings According to Purpose Set the scanning conditions acco rding to the scanning purpose. When you wan t to delete the images of the blank pages in two-sided docu ments Set the scanning side setting to [Skip Blank Page] on the [Basic] tab to delete the images of the blank pages in the docu ment.
65 When you do no t want to scan colored lines and text Specify the color (red, green, blue, all colors) to be ignored (dropped out) in the color drop-out settings on the [Image proce ssing] tab, and that color will be removed from the scanned image.
66 When you want to en ha nce contours in images Adjust the edge emphasis setting on the [Image processing] tab. Click [Image processing] and adjust the edge emphasis settings in the dialog box which appears.
67 When you want to enhance text that is difficult to read because of factors such as th e backgrou nd of the scanned docu ment Select [Advanced Text Enhancement] or [Advanced Text Enhancement II] in the mode setting on the [Basic] tab. The background behind the text is removed or processed so that the text is emphasized for better readability.
68 When you want to de tect mu ltiple pages fed at the same time Select the [Double Feed Detection] check box on the [Feeding] tab . You can enable either one or both of [Detect by Ultrasonic] and [Detect by Length]. Select the [Double Feed Detection] check box.
69 Select the [Text Orientation Recognition] check box. The text orientation on each page is detected, and the scanned image is rotated in 90-degree increments to correct the orientation. Hint When the [Text Orientation Recog nition] check box is selected, [Document Orientati on] is unavailable.
70 When you want to us e ba tch separation for scanning When you want to divide and sc an a document, you can separate a batch at the timing with whic h each next document is placed and scanned. (Only enabled for applications that support batch separation.
71 A When you want to specify different scanning conditions for the front and back pages of a document, select [Skip Blank Page] or [Both] for [Scanning Side] on the [Basic] tab in advance. B Specify the number of scanning conditions to apply in [Stream count of Front].
72 When you want to remove do ts and notches that appear in documents You can remove dots and notches prot ru ding from object outlines that appear in documents from scanned images. • Select the [Erase Dot] check box to automatically re move isolated black dots (3 x 3 dot size) from white backgrounds (or white dots from black backgrounds).
73 When you want to save a scanner driver setting When you finish configuring a setti ng, click the [Save] button of [User Preference] to save the setting. The saved setting is registered to the list. You can delet e a setting from the list with the [Delete] butt on, and save or load a configuration file with the [Back Up] or [Restore] button.
74 Function Restrictions Depending on Color Mode Setting Some of the setting items in each of the driver tabs are disab led as follows depending on the setting for [Color Mode] on the [ Basic] tab.

77 More Advanced Scanning Me thods (Batch Separation) Batch Separation (Insert blank page) Recognizes blank pages as batch separat ors and performs batch separation (automatic file separat ion) when do cuments containing blank pages are scanned.
78 1 Print patchcode with a printer. Click [Start] – [All Programs] – [Canon DR-M160] a nd then select [Patchcode] from the menu. Patchcodes can be printed in A4 and letter (LTR) sizes. Open the application and print a patchcode that is the same size as the document to be scanned.
79 2 Place the documents in the scan ner after inserting the patchcode sheet in front of the page that separates the files. 3 In an application, specify a patchco de as a type of batch separation. When using CapturePerfect, select [Patchcode] in t he [Batch Separator] settings.
80 Maintenance Daily Maintenance Clean the scanner on a reg ular basis, as described below, to mainta in peak scanning qualit y. CAUTION • When cleaning the scanner and the inside of the scanner, turn OF F the power switch and disconnect the power cord from the power outlet.
81 2 Pull the OPEN leve r and pull open the front unit toward you. 3 Use compressed air to remove dust and paper particles from the inside of the scanner.
82 5 Clean the rollers. Clean the rollers while turning them. Wipe the rollers with a cloth that has bee n dampened with water and thoroughly wrung out, and then use a clean, dry and soft cloth to wipe away any moisture. 6 Remove the retard roller and fe ed roller.
83 9 Close the front un it by gently pu shing it up on bo th sides until it clicks into pl ace. Make sure that the front unit is completely close d by pushing until you h ear a click.
84 2 Click [Canon DR-M160 USB] and click [Prop erties]. Scanner properties are disp layed. 3 Click the [Maintenanc e] tab and then ch ange the val ue of [Reduction ratio adjustment]. The adjustment value can be se t within the range from -3.0% to 3.0%.
85 Replacing Consumable Parts The two rollers (feed roller and retard roller) installed in the scan ner are consumable parts. The feed rolle r and retard roller wear with scanning. If the feed roller and retard roller are worn, documents may not feed correctly and paper jams and double feeds may occur.
86 Hint The location of each of the consumable parts is shown below. 3 When closing the front unit, make sure that it is completely cl osed by gently press ing the left and rig ht until you hear a clic k. 4 Close the document eject tray. Replacing the Feed Roller 1 Open the roller cover.
87 2 Remove the feed roller. 3 Install the new feed roller. 4 Close the rolle r cover. Replacing the Retard Roller 1 Open the roller cover. 2 Pull the left lever that secures the retar d roller to the scanner, and remove the rolle r.
88 3 Install the new retard ro ller by ins erting the right side first. 4 Push the left side of the retard roll er to secure it to the scanner. 5 Close the rolle r cover.
89 2 Click [Canon DR-M160 USB] and click [Prop erties]. Scanner properties are disp layed. 3 Click the [Maintenance] tab an d then select [Reset]. The counter for [Current Rollers] resets. 4 Click [OK] to close the scanner pro perties. 1 Opens the scanner driver's Detail Se ttings screen.
90 Auto Power Off Setting The scanner automatically turns off if 4 hours elapse without scanning or another operation being performed. To disable this setting, follow the procedure below. IMPORTANT Log on to Windows as an Administrator. 1 Click the Start button, and then click [All Programs], [Canon DR-M160], and [Canon imageFORMUL A Utility] .
91 4 Click [OK] to close th e scanner properties. Removing the Document Feed Tray When you will store or otherwise not use the scanner for a long period of time, remove the document feed tray.
92 Troubleshooting Common Problems and Solutions This section provides recommended so lutions to common problems. If you have a problem that is not solv ed by the following, contact your local authorized Canon dealer. Problem 1 The scanner will not turn on.
93 Problem 6 Pages are missing. Solutions When the scanner driver’s [Scanni ng Side] setting is [Skip Blank Page], documents wi th very little black may be unintentionally skipped. Decrease the Set the likelihood of skipping blank page value ("Wh en you want to delete the images o f the blank pages in two- sided documents" on P.
94 Problem 11 Memory becomes insufficient and s canning stops. Solutions If you configure scanni ng conditions that use a large amount of the computer’s memory, scanning may stop because of insufficient memory.
95 Software Tr oubleshooting This section describes troubleshoot ing problems and solutions for operating the supplied software (CaptureOnTouch and CapturePerfect). If scanning is too slow (1) Close other running programs, if any. (2) Scanning can be slowed down by memory shortage caused by memory-resident applicat ions such as anti-virus programs.
96 Useful tips Here are some useful ti ps for scanning documents. Where are scanned images saved? Can the save destination be changed ? Images are saved to the followin g locations, according to program settings. For example, save locations such as the following can be set in CaptureOnTouch.
97 CapturePerfect The rules for the file names of scanned images and the fo lder in which scanned images are saved can be set and then applied during scanning.
98 Clearing a Paper Jam When paper jams are detected duri ng scanning, th e following error codes are displayed in the scanner ’s display panel and scanning is interrupted. When a paper jam or double feed occurs during scanning, use t he following procedures to clear them.
99 IMPORTANT Make sure to pull the docume nt out carefully, without applying too much force. If the jammed paper tears while you are pulling it out, make sure to remove any remaining pieces from insid e the scanner. 4 Close the front un it by gently pu shing it up on bo th sides until it clicks into pl ace.
100 Uninstalling the Software If the ISIS/TWAIN driver, CaptureO nTouch or Ca pturePerfect is not operating normally, follow the pr ocedure below to uninsta ll them. Then, re-install the software from the Setup disc. (See p. 7) IMPORTANT Log on to Windows as an Administrator.
