ENG-1 The Canon EF400mm f/4 DO IS USM lens is a high-performance, super telephoto lens dedicated to Canon EOS cameras. Besides having an Image Stabilizer , it is the world's first camera lens incorporating a m ulti-layer diffractive optical element (DO).

ENG-4 • After detaching the lens, place the lens with the rear end up to prev ent the lens surface and electrical contacts from getting scratched. • If the contacts get soiled, scratched, or hav e fingerpr ints on them, corrosion or faulty connections can result.
ENG-5 After autofocusing in ONE SHO T AF mode, focus manually by pressing the shutter b utton halfway and turning the focusing ring. (Full-time manual f ocus) If you autof ocus outside the set focusing distance r ange, the lens ma y stop focusing at the start of the focusing r ange; how ev er, this is not a malfunction.
ENG-6 4. AF Stop Button During autofocus operation, y ou can press the AF stop button to temporarily pause autof ocus. If the shutter button is still pressed halfw ay when the AF stop button is released, autof ocusing will continue as bef ore.
ENG-7 6. Image Stabilizer Settings Y ou can use the image stabilizer in AF or MF mode. Select the stabilizer mode. • MODE 1: Corrects vibrations in all directions.

Tips on Using the Image Stabilizer ● MODE 1 ● MODE 2 The image stabilizer in this lens is eff ective f or hand-held shots under the following conditions. • In semi-darkened areas such as indoors or outdoors at night. • In locations where flash photograph y is prohibited, such as ar t museums and theater stages.
ENG-9 Tips on Using the Image Stabilizer • The Image Stabilizer cannot compensate f or a b lurred shot caused b y a subject that moved. • Set the ST ABILIZER switch to when you are taking pictures using the Bulb setting (long e xposures). If the ST ABILIZER switch is set to , the image stabilizer function ma y introduce errors.
ENG-10 The dedicated Lens Hood ET -120 helps to prev ent stray light from entering the lens and protects the front of the lens from rain, snow or dust. To attach the hood, loosen the hood locking knob by tur ning it counterclockwise. Fit the hood onto the lens hood mount, and tighten the locking knob to fix it in place.
ENG-11 9. Using the T ripod Mount Adjusting the Rev olving Mount Y ou can loosen the or ientation lock-knob on the tripod mount to allow it to rotate as needed to fit a par ticular camera model f or switching between v er tical and horizontal positions.
ENG-12 10. Drop-In Filter s The lens comes with the drop-in Gelatin Filter Holder 52 holding a glass filter . ENG-13 11. Extenders (Sold separately) • First attach the Extender to the lens, then attach the lens to the camera. Detach it from the camera in the re verse order . If y ou attach the lens to the camera first, misoperation may occur . • With Extender EF2X II attached to the lens, only manual f ocus is possible.
