14 STEP 3 Connect ing to a Comp uter Connect the scanner to the computer and the power supply. IMPORTANT • Do not connect the scanner to t he com puter before installing the software. • Before connecting the scanner to the computer, verify that the power of the scanner is OFF.

The power button lights blue when t he power turns ON.

18 Important Safety In structi ons To ensure the safe operation of this scanner, be sure to read the safety warnings and precautions described below. Installat ion Locat ion The performance of this s canner is affected by the enviro nment in which it is installed.
19 Moving the Scan ner ● When moving the scanner, always hold it with both hands to avoid dropping it. The scanner weighs approx imately 3.2 kg (7.1 lb) .
20 ● Do not allow water or flammable substances (alcohol, paint t hinner, benzene, etc.) to spill into the scanner, as this may res ult in a fire or electric shock.
21 Features of t he Scanner The main features of the DR-M160 d ocument scanner are de scribed below. ● Compact Design The scanner has a comp act size of 280 mm (11.02")(W) x 172 mm (6.77")(D) x 178 mm (7.01")( H) when the doc ument feed is c losed.
22 ● Prescan Function The scanner is eq uipped with a Presc an function that allows y ou to adjust the contrast and brightness of a prescanned image and then send the adjusted image to the appli cation software, without needing to scan the document again.

27 CAUTION • When scanning cards, place them to be fed horiz ontally. If you place cards t o be fed vertically, they may not be ejected properly, and cards that get jammed may be damaged when you remove them. • Embossed car ds may n ot be able t o be scanned corr ectly, depending on the type of embossment.
28 How to Place Docum ents Scanning mu ltiple documents Standard pa per feedin g should be used wh en scanning mul tipl e documents of a standard size at one time. Standard paper feeding enables multiple docum ents to be f ed while separating eac h page.
29 4 Adjust the document guides to fit th e width of the docume nt to be scan ned. 5 Place the doc umen t. After placing the doc ument, align the doc ument guides with both edges of the d ocument. IMPORTANT • When placing documents into the feed tray, t ake care not to cut your hand on the edges of the paper.

31 Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch What is Capt ureOnTouch? CaptureOnTouch is a scanning application t hat allows you to s can a document with a simple operation by following the instruct ions on the screen. CaptureOnTouch is provided with mu ltiple scanning methods that can be selected according to the purpose and application.
32 Exiting CaptureOnTouch Click at the top of the window to close the Captur eO nTouc h main window . When doing so, the main window closes but CaptureOnTouch is kept as resident in the system. To stop CaptureO nTouch being resident in the sy stem, click the (CaptureO nTou ch iconj in the taskbar, and select [Exit] from the menu.
33 3 Set the sc an metho d in the top sc reen. A Specify whether to enable continuous scanning. When scanning multiple doc uments as o ne scanned image o r splitting up a large doc ument to scan in parts, select [ON] t o enable continuous scanning. B Specify whether to scan the document in full auto mode.
34 5 Configure the settings related to output an d then output the scan ned imag es. A Configure the settings related to output. (See p. 40) B Click this button to output the scanned images. The button name differs for each output method. For example, it is [ Save] when the output method is set t o [Save to folder].
35 2 Enter the job name , and press the Enter key. Hin t Job numbers up to 9 are added (in numerical order) t o the end of the set job name. B y specifying the job number with the operating panel, you can start scanning after pressing the operating panel button.
36 3 Click the St art button. The docum ent is scanned. While scanning is in progress, the number of pages scanned is d isplayed in addition to the scanner set ti ngs. When all the pages of the document are scanned, the s canned images are output according to the registered job settings and the complete sc reen appears.
37 Operati ng the scanner with t he operati ng panel buttons You can st art scanning by selecting a job from the scanner’s operating panel. 1 Set a job num ber eve ry time a job is registere d with CaptureOnTo uch. 2 Place the doc umen t in the sca nner.
38 Setting Basic It ems Scanner settings include the basic items that are conf igured in [Scanner Settings], and the setting items that are configured in the advanced settings dialog box. The sett ings in the advanced settings dialog box are applied for settings othe r than the basic items.
39 Operation in Continuous Scanning Screen If a document is scanned with eit her Scan First or Select Scan Job when [Enable continuous sc anning] is set to [ON] in the S tart screen, the Continuous Scanning screen appears when all of the pages of the placed document have been fed.
40 Settin g the Out put Meth od CaptureOnTouch is provided with various output methods for processing scanned images. The output m ethod specification is common to Sc an First and Select Scan Job.
41 Scanning with Ca pturePerfect Scanning w ith Captur ePerfect This sectio n describes procedur es fr om launc hing CapturePerfect to selecting a scanner, as well as proc edures for scanning with the [Scan bat ch to fi le] fu ncti on. See the “C apturePerfect Operat ing Guide” or h elp for details.

IMPORTANT If you configure scanning conditions that consume a large amount of the compute r's memory, scanning ma y stop because of insufficient memor y.
43 Daily Mainte nance Replaci ng Consum able Parts The two rollers (feed roller and retard roller) installed in the scanner are consumable parts. The feed roll er and retard roller wear wit h scanning. If the feed roller and ret ard roller are worn, do cuments may not feed correc tly and paper jam s and double feeds may occur.
44 Hin t The location of each of t he consumable parts is shown below. 3 When closing the front unit, make sure that it is completely closed by gently pr essing the left and right until you hear a c lick. 4 Clos e the docu ment ej ect tra y. Replacing the Feed Roll er 1 Open t he rolle r cover.
45 3 Install the new fee d roller. 4 Close th e roller cover. Replacing the Retard Roller 1 Open t he rolle r cover. 2 Pull the left lever th at secures the retard roller to the scanner, and remo ve the r oller.
46 3 Install the new retard roller by inserting the right side first. 4 Push the l eft side of t he retard roller to sec ure it to the scan ner. 5 Close th e roller cover. Resetting the counter 1 Start Windows and log in as a user with administr ator privileges.
47 4 Click the [ Maintena nce] tab an d then se lect [Reset ]. The counter for [Current Rollers] resets. 5 Click [O K] to clos e the scanne r prope rties. Auto Po wer Off Set ting The scanner automatically turns off if 4 hours elap se without scanning or another operation being performed.

Removing t he Document F eed Tray When you will store or otherwise not use t he scanner for a long period of time, rem ove the docum ent feed tray.
49 Common Problems and Solutions This section prov ides recom mended solutions to c ommon pr oblems. If you have a problem that is not solved by the following, contact your local authorized Canon dealer. Probl em 1 The scanner will not tu rn on. Solutions Confirm that the AC adapter is plugged firmly into a power outlet.
50 Problem 8 S canned images are saved in TI FF instead of JPEG format. Solutions When documents are scanned with CapturePerfect while [Color Mode] is set to [Detect automatically] in t he scanner driver, documents detec ted as black and white are automatically s aved in TIFF f ormat, even if the f ile type is specified as JPEG format.
51 Clearing a Pape r Jam When paper jams and double feeds are detected during scanning, the following error codes are displayed in the scanner’s display panel and scanning is interrupted. When a paper jam or double feed occurs during scanning, use t he following procedures to clear them.
52 IMPORTANT Make sure to pull the document out carefully, without applying too much force. If the jammed paper tears while you are p ulling it out, make sure to remove any remaining pieces from inside the scanner. 4 Close the front unit by gently push ing it up on bot h sides until it cl icks into place.
