1-6 Introduction Chapter 1 ❍ Do not use the printer near water . If you spill liquid on or into the printer , unplug it immediately and call the C ustomer Car e Center (see page 1-4). ❍ Slots and openings in the printer and on the back or bottom are pro vided for ventilation.

Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-7 Paper Handling Loading P aper Y ou can stack paper in the sheet feeder to load it auto matically , or you can manually feed one sheet at a time through the manual feed slot on the back of the pr inter . Y ou can place appr o ximately 130 sheets of plain paper (20 lb or 64 g /m 2 ) in the sheet feeder at a time.
❍ For best r esults, fan the paper before loading it. ❍ Alwa ys fan a stack of paper along the edge that w ill feed into the printer first. ❍ Align the edge of the paper with the rig ht edge of the sheet feeder and secure the stack with the paper guide.
Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-9 Paper Handling Auto Feed Guidelines W hen automatically feeding stacks of paper , follo w these guidelines: ❍ Do not open the front c ov er while printing. ❍ Do not leav e paper stack ed in the printer for long periods of time; longer sheets of paper may become bent or curled o ver time.
3-10 P aper Handling Chapter 3 Manually Feeding P aper Y ou use the manual feed function when printing on heavier -weight print media (17 lb to 146 lb , 64 g/ m 2 to 550 g/ m 2 , or paper thickness up to 0.8 mm). N Y ou must use manual feed for tabloid (11 × 17 in) paper .
Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-11 Paper Handling ❍ If you ha ve just turned on the printer , or not used the printer for awhile, the sheet may aut omatically eject. Simply feed the sheet again. ❍ On the Settings tab, click the F eed paper manually box so that a check mark appears.
3-12 P aper Handling Chapter 3 Printing on Envelopes Y ou can stack up to 15 en v elopes in the sheet feeder or you can man ually feed en velopes one at a time. U .S. Commer cial number 10 (COM10) en v elopes and E uropean DL en velopes are r ecommended.
Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-13 Paper Handling ❍ T o remo ve curling fr om en velopes, hold the edges of the en velopes diagonally and bend gently . ❍ Mak e sure an y curls ar e remo v ed from the flap of each en velope. ❍ Slide a stack of env elopes into the sheet feeder until it stops.

Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-17 Paper Handling ❍ Mak e sure the printer is on. ❍ Open a wor d proc essing program (such as N otepad) and print a blank page. ❍ The printer feeds the cleaning sheet and then ejects it. ❍ U se a cleaning sheet onc e only .
3-18 P aper Handling Chapter 3 ❍ Insert the sheet w ith the cloth side out (to ward y ou) and the open end up (awa y fr om the sheet feeder). ❍ A djust the paper guide to the edge of the fabric sheet.
Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-19 Paper Handling ❍ In the Settings tab , select Fabric Sheet for the Media and Fabric Size for Size . ❍ N ow y ou can start the print oper ation from y our W indo ws application. ❍ Let the printed fabric sheet set for about one hour to allow the ink t o complet ely dr y .
3-20 P aper Handling Chapter 3 Printing on Banner P aper Y ou load banner paper through the manual feed slot on the back of the printer . For best r esults, use Canon Banner P aper . T o set up a print job on banner paper , y ou must decide on the number of sheets you need.
Chapter 3 P aper Handling 3-21 Paper Handling ❍ The maximum length y ou can use is six sheets (66 inches or 1676 mm). ❍ Alwa ys leav e an extra sheet at the end of the banner—just in case the ty pe or gr aphics runs over at the end of the banner .
3-22 P aper Handling Chapter 3 ❍ Clear space in front of the paper output slot of the printer for at least one sheet. Make sure the paper exit area is clear .

4-2 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 ❍ Do not unplug the printer unnecessarily . ❍ Do not unplug the printer or turn off a power strip to which the printer is attached when the printer’ s power is turned on.
Chapter 4 Maintaining the Printer 4-3 Maintaining the Printer Clean especially well around the plat en area. Be careful not t o touch the film cable. Clean the exterior of the pr inter with a soft cloth moistened with water . Clean awa y smudges and dust.
4-4 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 N The pattern on the left shows the no zzle pattern for the cart ridge in Holder 2 and the patt ern on the rig ht is for the cart ridge in Holder 1. ❍ On the General tab in the BJC-5100 Series Printer Driver , click the Print T est Page button.

4-6 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 Cleaning the Print Heads Y our printer is equipped with a pr int head cleaning function to ensure constant high quality printing . W hen you turn the printer on, it automatically performs print head cleaning (if necessar y).
Chapter 4 Maintaining the Printer 4-7 Maintaining the Printer Saving P ower T o sav e pow er , you can automatically turn off the printer if it is idle for a specified period of time.
4-8 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 BJ Cartridge Guidelines Y ou can use these cartr idges w ith the printer: ❍ BC-2 1e Color BJ Cartridge Contains the print head unit and two r eplaceable BJ tanks—the BCI-21 Color BJ T ank contains c olor ink (cyan, magenta, yellow) and the BCI-21 Black BJ T ank contains black ink.
Chapter 4 Maintaining the Printer 4-9 Maintaining the Printer N ❍ For optim um use of the BJC-5100 Series pr inter , be sure t o install two cartr idges. ❍ If you install the BC-23 Enhanc ed Black BJ Cart ridge in Holder 1, the printer will pr int black ink only regardless of the cart ridge in Holder 2.

Chapter 4 Maintaining the Printer 4-11 Maintaining the Printer ❍ Mak e sure both BJ tanks ar e installed in the BC-21e Color BJ Cart ridge. Att empting to use the BC-21e C olor BJ Cart ridge with one BJ tank only may cause ink clogging. ❍ If spilled, the ink is difficult to remov e.
4-12 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 ❍ Lift the co ver fr om the cent er . ❍ W henever y ou open the printer cov er , the car tr idge holder mov es to the cent er of the pr inter . ❍ The POWER/ERROR light blinks while the car tridge holder is positioned in the cent er of the pr inter .
Chapter 4 Maintaining the Printer 4-13 Maintaining the Printer ❍ If you ar e replacing an old BJ cartridge, dispose of the old cart ridge properly . ❍ If you ar e switching cartr idges, store the cartr idge in the Ink Cartr idge Storage Bo x. ❍ P eel off the prot ectiv e foil.
4-14 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 ❍ Lift off the orange cap from the print head and then remo ve the orange tape. ❍ Gently press the cartridge cover until it snaps int o place. Close the blue cartridge holder cover . Gently set the BJ cartridge into the cartridge holder .

Att empting to mo ve the BJ cartridge holders will damage the pr inter . N W henever y ou turn off the printer , the BJ cartr idges move t o the home position on the rig ht and the print heads are capped.
4-16 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 Replacing a BJ Tank in the BC-2 1e Color BJ Cartridge If you ar e using a BC-21e Color BJ Cartr idge and you perform a print operation correctly but either the color or black output is blank, a BJ tank may be out of ink.
Chapter 4 Maintaining the Printer 4-17 Maintaining the Printer ❍ The color BJ tank is on the left; the black BJ tank is on the rig ht. ❍ Grasp the tab on the top of the tank and pull forward to release the BJ tank. ❍ Then lift the BJ tank up and out of the BJ car tr idge unit.
4-18 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 ❍ If you ar e replacing both tanks, repeat st eps 4 through 6 for the other BJ tank. ❍ Mak e sur e each BJ tank is c orrectly seated in its r espectiv e slot. Close the blue cartridge holder cover . Press firmly on the tab on the top of the BJ tank until it snaps into place.

4-20 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 ❍ Y ou must insert the car tridge correctly or the storage bo x will not close. ❍ The prot ectiv e cap must be remo ved fr om the cartr idge before y ou set it in the storage bo x. ❍ Be sure the lid snaps closed.
Chapter 4 Maintaining the Printer 4-21 Maintaining the Printer If you ha ve mor e than one Ink Cartridge Storage Box, you can hook them together . Simply connect them by the slides and groo ves on the sides of the containers.
4-22 Maintaining the Printer Chapter 4 ❍ P ack the printer in its original box with the packing suppor ts. ❍ Mak e sure the bo x is mar ked FRA GILE or HANDLE WITH CARE. ❍ Do not remo ve the BJ cartr idges from the printer or ship a BJ cart r idge or a BJ tank from which you ha v e remo ved the prot ective cap .
T roubleshooting Chapter 5 Troubleshooting 5-1 Due to toda y’ s rapidly changing computer en vironment, we ha ve plac ed troubleshooting information in a variet y of places to ensure that the most accurate information possible is available.

Chapter 5 Troubleshooting 5-11 T roubleshooting Error Conditions W hen the POWER/ERROR light is orange, a printer error has occurred. The printer beeps to alert you to the type of error co ndition as follows: ❍ T wo beeps—An error co ndition exists, such as paper is out or jammed.

BJ cartridge The printing mechanism that contains the print head unit and BJ tanks. Bubble Jet printing An ink jet ty pe of pr inting that heats the ink to a boiling point in a nozzle to form a bubble.
G-2 Glossar y ECP Extended Capability P ort. ECP is a protocol that pr ovides for a high performance bi-directional c ommunication path between the host adapter and the peripheral.
