9 • Before using the product, please ensure that you read the safety precautions described below. Always ensure that the product is used correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intended to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipment.
Safety Precautions 10 • Turn the camera off in places where camera use is prohibited. The electromagnetic waves emitted by the camera may interfere with the o peration of electronic instruments and other devices.
Safety Precautions 11 • Remove and store the battery when you are not using the camera. If the battery is left inside the camera, damage caused by leakage ma y occur. • Before you discard the battery, cover the terminals with tape or other insulators.

13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view and erase the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.
14 This camer a has a tou ch panel scre en that al lows you to perform ope rations with the touch of yo ur finger. Briefly touch the screen with your finger. z Used for oper ations such as mak ing various set tings or shoo ting. Touch and drag your finger across the screen.
15 Use the incl uded charge r to charg e the battery . Be sure to charge the ba ttery as it is not c harged at the ti me of purchase. Remove the co ver. Insert the battery. z Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen insert the batt ery by sli ding it in ( ) and down ( ).

18 Insert the inclu ded battery. Open the cover. z Slide the cov er ( ) and open it ( ). Insert the battery. z Press the batt ery lock in th e direction of the arrow, then insert the bat tery as shown until it lo cks into place wi th a click. z Be sure to insert the battery i n the corre ct direction or it wi ll not properly loc k into place.
19 Insert a memor y card (sold se parately). Check the card’s write-protect tab. z If the memor y card has a write-prot ect tab, you will not be able to re cord images if the tab is in the loc ked positio n. Slide the tab up until you h ear a click.
Inserting the Memory Card 20 Number of Shots per Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots that can be taken will vary depending on camera s ettings, the subject and the memory card used.
21 The Date/Time sett ings screen will appear th e first time th e camera is turn ed on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. z Press the ON/OF F button. X The Date/Time screen will appe ar.
Setting the Date and Time 22 You can chan ge the current da te and time set tings. Display the menu. z Touch H , then touch n . Choose [Date/Time]. z Touch the 3 tab. z Drag up or down th e screen to c hoose [Date/Time]. z Touch [Date /Time]. Change the date and time.
23 You can change the langua ge that display s on the screen. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 butt on. Display the setting s screen. z Touch and hold n . X The settings s creen will appe ar. Set the disp lay languag e. z Touch a displa y language, then touch ^ .
24 Before you us e a new memory card or one that has be en formatted in o ther devices, yo u should for mat the car d with this c amera. Format ting (initializ ing) a memory car d erases all d ata on the memory card. As you cann ot retrieve the erased da ta, exercis e adequate cau tion before formatting th e memory card.
Pressing the Shutter Button 25 To take imag es that are in focus, be sure t o first pres s the shutt er button lightly (hal fway) to focu s, then pre ss fully t o shoot. Press halfway (Press lightly to focus). z Press light ly until the ca mera beeps twic e and AF frames app ear where the ca mera focused.
26 Since the ca mera can determi ne the subje ct and shooting conditions, yo u can let it automa tically sele ct the best settings fo r the scene and just sho ot. Turn on the camera. z Press the ON/OF F button. X The start-up s creen will appe ar. Enter A mode.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 27 X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and AF fram es will appear wh ere the camera focuse d. Several AF frames will appear wh en the camera focuse s on more than 1 poi nt. Shoot. z Press the s hutter butto n fully to s hoot.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 28 Shoot. z When you remove yo ur finger from t he screen, the camera plays th e shutter sound and take s the shot. z To deactivate th e Touch Shutter funct ion, touch . It will chan ge to . • The Touch Shutter function operates in the same way as when pressing the shutter button.
Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) 29 • What if a blue frame appears when you press the shutter button ha lfway? A blue frame ap pears when a moving subject is det ected; the focus and exposure will continuously adjust (Servo AF). • What if a flashing appears? Attach the camera to a tripod so that t he camera does not move and blur the image.
30 You can view the images you ha ve taken on the screen. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 butt on. X The last imag e you took will appear. Choose an image. z Dragging left to rig ht across the scree n will cycle thro ugh the i mages in t he reverse order they we re taken, fr om the newest image to th e oldest.
31 When an imag e is displ ayed, lightl y tapping the camera as shown be low will switch to the next image. Active Display • Be sure to put the stra p around your wrist , and hold the camera f irmly to avoid dropping it . • Depending on the way you tap the camera, images may not switch.
32 You can ch oose and erase image s one at a t ime. Please note that erased images can not be recovered . Exercise ad equate cauti on before erasi ng an image. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 butt on. X The last imag e you took will appear. Choose an image to erase .
33 The camera wi ll determine the subjec t and shoot ing conditio ns, and sel ect the best settin gs for the s cene. The audio will re cord in ste reo. If you continue shooting for a lo ng time, the camera may become warm. Thi s is not a malf unction.
Shooting Movies 34 Shooting Time • Shooting times are based on default settings. • Maximum clip length is approx. 10 minutes. • Recording may stop even if the maximum clip length has not been reache d on some memory cards. SD Speed Class 6 or higher memory cards are recommended.
35 You can view th e movies you have shot on the scr een. Enter Playback mode. z Press the 1 butt on. X appears on movi es. Choose a movie. z Drag across the screen to choose a mo vie to play back. Play the movie. z Touch . X The movie will pl ay. z Drag up or dow n the screen dur ing playback to adj ust the volume.

81 Choosing Settings Yourself In this chapter you will learn how to use t he various functions in G mode to progressively advanc e your shooting skills. • This chapter assumes that yo u have set the mode s witch to 4 and t he camera is in G mode. • G stands for Pr ogram AE.
82 You can choo se the setti ngs for vario us function s to suit your preferences . AE stands for Auto Exp osure. The focusin g range is approxim ately 5 cm (2.0 in. ) – infinity at maxi mum wide angle ( j ), and approximately 1 m (3.3 ft.) – infi nity at maximum te lephoto ( i ).

84 The white balance (WB ) function se ts the optima l white bal ance for na tural looking col ors to match t he shooting cond itions. Choose the white balanc e function. z Touch H , then drag the menu on the left up or down to c hoose . Choose an option.

87 The camera can d etect areas i n the scene, su ch as faces or backg rounds, that are to o bright or dar k and automatica lly adjust them to the opti mum brightness when shootin g. Also, w hen the overa ll image is l acking in co ntrast, the camera wil l automatic ally correct the image for a sh arper impres sion when shoot ing.
88 As long as you hold the shutter bu tton down, th e camera will s hoot continuous ly. Choose a Drive mode. z Touch H , then drag the menu on the left up or down to c hoose . Choose an option. z Touch W . z Touch W again t o make the setting . X Once set, W will appear on the scree n.

Changing the Tone of an Image (My Colors) 90 The contra st, sharpne ss, color s aturation, r ed, green, blue, and s kin tones in an image can be chosen and set at 5 differen t levels. z Follow Step 2 o n p. 89 to choose . z Touch on the ri ght side of th e screen.
91 If you set t he camera to e , it focuses on close subjects only. The focusi ng range is ap proximately 1 – 50 cm (0.4 in. – 1.6 ft.) from the en d of the lens at maximum wide angle ( j ). Choose e . z Touch H , then drag the menu on the left up or down to ch oose .
92 The focal len gth of the lens can be increased by 1.5x or 2.0x. This enables a faster shu tter speed and less chance of camera shake th an the zoom (includi ng digital zoom) used by itsel f at the same zoo m factor. Choose [Digital Zoom]. z Touch H , then n to choo se the 4 tab.
93 You can change the AF (Auto Focu s) frame mode to matc h the scene you want to shoot. Choose [AF Frame]. z Touch H , then n to choo se the 4 tab. Touc h [AF Frame], then touc h qr to choose an opt ion. • Detects pe ople’s face s and sets t he focus, ex posure (ev aluative mete ring only) and whit e balance ( only).
Changing the AF Frame Mode 94 A single AF frame will be used. This i s effective for focusing on a specif ic point. Changing th e Composition with the Focus Lock While you keep the shutter button pressed ha lfway, the f ocus and exposu re are locked. You can now recomp ose and shoot.
95 If you pr ess the shutt er button hal fway, the AF frame will magnify and yo u can check the fo cus. Choose [AF-Poi nt Zoom]. z Touch H , then n to choo se the 4 tab. Touch [AF-P oint Zoom], then touch qr to c hoose [On ]. Check the focus. z Press the shut ter button hal fway.
96 You can choo se a specific subject or pers on's face, or a location on the screen, to focu s on and shoot. Choose the subject, face or location to focus on. z Touch the sub ject or perso n shown on the screen. X When the AF frame mode is set to [Face Detect], the ca mera will beep and display when it detec ts the subject .
Shooting with the AF Lock 97 The focus can be loc ked. After l ocking the focus, the focal distan ce will not change ev en when yo u release your finger from the s hutter butt on. Lock the focus. z Keep the shutter button pressed halfway and touch inside the area shown on the left.
Changing the Metering Method 98 You can change the metering me thod (brightn ess measuring function) to match the sh ooting con ditions. Choose the metering method. z Touch H , then drag the menu on the left up or down to c hoose . Choose an option. z Touch an item yo u want to set.
99 You can lock t he exposure and shoot, or set the focus and ex posure separatel y to shoot. AE st ands for “Aut o Exposure”. Lock the exp osure. z Point the camera towa rd the subj ect and touch the lowe r part of the screen (inside the frame sho wn on the left ) while pressin g the shutter button halfway .
100 You can make t he main subj ect, such a s people, appe ar bright by h aving the camera provi de the appr opriate illumin ation with the flash. At the same time , you can use a sl ow shutter s peed to br ighten t he backgrou nd that t he light from the fla sh cannot reach.
