13 UPPER THREADING 1. Raise the presser f oot lev er . (If the presser foot is not raised, the upper thread cannot be threaded.) Note In order to ensure that the upper threading is done correctly , this sewing machine is equipped with an upper threading shutter which pre vents upper threading or needle threading while the presser foot is lo wered.
14 2 5 1 4. While holding the end of the thread with your left hand, pass the thread through the guides in the order shown by the num- bers. Note - If the thread is pushed down at 1 to make it taut, it can be passed around the other thread guides more easily .
15 5 * Rotate y our r ight hand slightly to check that the thread is en- gaged. 10. While gently holding the thread, raise the needle threader le- ver. 11. Pull the thread to w ards the rear to finish the upper threading. CA UTION The needle threader lever can only be used with home sewing machine needles size 75/11-100/16.

Sliding the switch to the right will lo wer the f eed dog, for e xample during button sewing.

27 1. SEWING CHAPTER 2 TRIAL SEWING Sewing using a utility stitch 1. T ur n on the sewing machine . The straight stitch (left) is se- lected. 2. Install the correct presser f oot. Place the fabric under the presser f oot, then pull out about 5 cm (2") of the upper thread and pass it under the presser f oot toward the rear of the ma- chine.
28 5. When sewing is completed, press the “REVERSE STITCH” button to se w a fe w re verse stitches . * If the needle stop position is set to the down position (the nee- dle stop position s witch key’ s LED lamp is lit), press the “NEE- DLE POSITION” button to r aise the needle.
29 SETTING THE NEEDLE ST OP DO WN POSITION T ouch the needle stop position switch k ey . The LED lamp abov e the ke y will light up. The needle stop position is set to the do wn position. 1 When the needle stop position switc h key's LED lamp is lit, the needle stop position is set to the down position.
30 STITCH WIDTH AND LENGTH Adjusting the stitch width Press the stitch width manual change k ey . The LED lamp will light up . Mov e the stitch width adjustment lev er up or down. Moving the le ver up increases the stitch width, and mo ving the lev er down decreases the stitch width.
31 Sewing a curve with a zigzag stitc h Set the stitch length short in order to obtain a fine stitch. Sew slowly while keeping the seam parallel to the fabric edge as you guide the fabric around the curve.
32 Se wing heavyweight fabrics Se wing lightweight fabrics Place thin paper or stabilizer material under the f abric before se w- ing. * Use a straight stitch f oot to eliminate any puc kering. Remem- ber to select the middle needle position. Additional adjustment of stitch length and tension ma y be necessar y .
33 Using the needle plate Align the edge of the f abric with a line on the needle plate to se w e ven seam allo wances. 1 15 mm (9/16") Free-arm sewing is convenient for sewing tubular areas such as pant hems and cuffs.

67 5 6 If the operation panel is dir ty , gently wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use organic solv ents or detergents. Cleaning the operation panel If the surface of the machine is dirty , lightly soak a cloth in a neutral detergent, squeez e it out firmly and then wipe the surf ace.
68 4. Remov e the race . * While pushing the race tow ards the bac k of the machine, lift the edge nearest y ou and remov e the race . 1 Race 6. Check that the notch on the shuttle is in the same position as when y ou removed the r ace. P osition the race so that the shelf and spring are aligned, and inser t the race .
69 CHANGING THE LIGHT BULB 1 2 CA UTION • Turn off the main power switch and unplug the machine before changing the light bulb. If the machine is on and the “Start/Stop” button is pressed accidentally, injuries may result. • To avoid burns, give the light bulb time to cool before changing it.
