10 2 Code 39 2.1 About Code 39 Code 39 was the first alphanum er ic bar code developed and is t he most widely used. Also known as Code USD-3 or Code 3/9, C ode 39 is widely used in m any indust r ies and is the standard f or m any government bar code specif icat ions, including the U.
11 2.3 Choosing the Right Font The various Code 39 fonts creat es bar code sym bols of differ ent sizes and densities. Most of t he f ont s use a 2.5:1 wide: nar r ow bar ratio. The Slim f onts use a 2:1 r at io f or narrower symbols and t he Wide font uses a 3: 1 r at io f or wider sym bols.

15 3 Interleaved 2 of 5 3.1 About Interleaved 2 of 5 Interleaved 2 of 5 is a num er ic- only bar code, variable in length and bi- d ir ect ional. It is a high-density code that can hold up to 18 digits per inch (25.4mm) when pri nted using a 7.5 mil X dimension.

19 Both UPC-A and UPC-E allow f or a supplement al t wo or five digit num ber to be appended to the main bar code sym bol. The supplem ental message was designed for use on publications and per iodicals. To ent er a supplemental m essage, it m ust consist of either t wo or five numer ic digit s .
20 4.2.2 UPC-E The UPC-E code is a compressed bar code int ended f or use on small it em s. Compression works by squeezing extr a zeros out of t he bar code and then automatically r e- insert ing them at t he scanner . Only bar codes containing zer os are candidates for t he UPC- E symbol.
21 4.3 PCL Escape Sequences From UNIX or DO S it is necessary to send PCL escape sequences as par t of the print data t o select t he desired bar code font . The PCL escape sequences for t he fonts are shown on t he PCL f ont list. I nst r uctions on how to pr int t he PCL font list ar e given in your printer m anual.
22 Codabar is unusual because some charact er s ar e wider than other s. With 2- elem ent widths defined, each char act er cont ains 4 bars and 3 spaces. The charact er is followed by a single narrow space t o separ at e it fr om t he next character. Each pattern begins and ends wit h one of 4 start / st op character s A- D.
