3–1 3 Configur ation Chapter 3 explains how to configure the Freedom HW to best meet your electric al system requirements. It covers the following: • Setting battery types on the main unit and • Adjusting unit settings.
3–2 975-0467-01-01 Setting Battery T ypes on the Main Unit Y ou can attach different types of lead-acid batteries to the Freedom HW . Before installing batteries make su re that you configure the unit to optimize the charging process. The settings can be changed by adju sting the dip switches found on the main unit behind the display panel.
Viewing Inverter/Charger Information 975-0467-01-01 3–3 V iewing Inverter/Charger Information The LED screen displays inverter/cha rger information as well as feature settings in coordination with the LED lights underneath the screen.
3–4 975-0467-01-01 T o cycle through the various feature settings: 1. Press and hold the Power button for five seconds to enter the feature settings mode. 2. Press the Power button to toggle between the following information: T o change the charger ’s charging curr ent setting: By default the charging current is set to 55 A.
Adjusting F eature Settings 975-0467-01-01 3–5 T o change the inver ter mode setting: By default the inverter mode is set to ON. ON (“ In1 ”) will put the inverter on standby . This means when shorepower is present, AC shorep ower will pass through as AC output.

Press and hold the Select button fo r five seconds to make the setting permanent. T o adjust the alarm setting: By default the alarm is set to ON.

4–2 975-0467-01-01 Display P anel Operation The Freedom HW features a display panel with three-digit LED displ ay screen to show inverter , AC source , and battery status information. Feature Description 1 Power button • Press and hold for one second to turn the Freedom HW ’ s Inverter function O N or OFF (when AC Shore Power is NOT present.
Operating in Shore P ower Mode 975-0467-01-01 4–3 Operating in Shor e P ower Mode The Freedom HW operates in shore power mode when an AC source (a generator or utility power) is present at the AC in put terminals.
4–4 975-0467-01-01 Operating in Inverter Mode The Freedom HW is in inverter mode when shore power is not presently available and the unit is using the battery (inverting DC to AC) to power the appliances connected to the Freedom HW . The Y ellow status LED lights up to indicate the Freedom HW is using the battery to power the appliances.
Operating in Inverter Mode 975-0467-01-01 4–5 Operating Several Loads at Once If you are going to operate several loads from the Freedom HW , turn them on one at a time after you have turned the inverter on.

4–8 975-0467-01-01 Operating During T r ansition Between Shor e P ower and Inverter Mode The Freedom HW ’ s advanced power management is capable o f transitioning power from an AC source to DC source within a fraction of a second and vice-versa.
Operating Limits 975-0467-01-01 4–9 Operating Limits P ower Output The Freedom HW can deliver up to 1000 watts continuous power . The wattage rating applies to resistiv e loads such as incandescent lights.
4–10 975-0467-01-01 Inverter Loads The Freedom HW will operate most AC loads within its power rating of 1000 watts. However , some appliances and equipment may be dif ficult to operate, and other appliances may ac tually be damaged if you try to operate them with the Freedom HW .
Inverter Loads 975-0467-01-01 4–11 T rouble Loads Some appliances, including the types listed below , may be damaged if they are connec te d to the Freedom HW : • Speed controllers found in so me fans, power tools, kitchen appliances, and other loads may be damaged.
4–12 975-0467-01-01 Battery Charging Battery charging is possible only wh en shore power is present and the Freedom HW unit is connected to a battery (or battery bank). The frequency of battery charging is determined by how much ener gy in the battery is used up duri ng inverting.

5–2 975-0467-01-01 General T roubleshooting Guidelines This section will help you narrow do wn the source of any problem you encounter . Before c ontacting Xantre x, please work through the steps listed below: 1. Check for any error codes displayed on th e displa y screen.

5–4 975-0467-01-01 Common Problems Buzz in Audio Equipment Some inexpensive stereo systems may emit a buzzing noise from their loudspeakers when operated from the Freedom HW . This occurs because the power supply in the audio syst em does not adequately filter the modified sine wave produced by the inverter .

5–6 975-0467-01-01 E07 Over-temperature warning Inverting • Reduce the loads connected to the AC outlet of the un it. • Check that the ventilation grille is not blocked. • Check for ambient temperature and move the unit to a cooler location whenever possible.
Wa r n i n g M e s s a g e s 975-0467-01-01 5–7 For error codes E01 to E04 : • the unit will stop inverting, and • the display screen and the alar m will turn off after 30 seconds.
5–8 975-0467-01-01 T roubleshooting Reference W ARNING: Electrical shock and burn hazard Do not disassemble the Freedom HW . It does not contain any user -serviceable parts.
T roubleshooting Reference 975-0467-01-01 5–9 No output vo ltage. The S tatus LED is green or yellow . 30 A supplementary breaker has tripped. Circuit breaker on the AC load panel or A C output disconnect has tripped. Battery voltage is too low to start inverting.
5–10 975-0467-01-01 Inverter Applications The Freedom HW performs differently depending on the AC loads connected to it. If you are havi ng problems with any of you r loads, read this section. Resistive Loads These are the loads that the inverter finds the simplest and mos t efficient to drive.
Inverter Applications 975-0467-01-01 5–11 Motor Loads Induction mot ors (motors without brushes) requ ire two to six times their running current on start up. The most demanding are those that start under load (e.g. compressors and pumps). Of the capacitor start motors (typical in drill presses, band saws, etc.
