4 • Never operat e the mower in wet grass. Always be sure of your footing. A s lip and fall can cause serious personal injury. • Keep a firm hold on the handle and walk, never run. If you feel you are losing your footing, RELEASE THE BLAD E CONTROL HANDLE IMMEDIATELY an d the blade will stop rotating within three seconds.

9 Conve r ting T o Side Dischar g e • Lift the r ear discha rge door a nd install the mulchin g baffle . See Figure 7. • On the side of th e mower, lift the mul ching plu g. See Figu re 9. • Slide th e two hooks of the side dischar ge chute under the hi nge pin on the mu lching pl ug assembl y as sh own in Figu re 9.
10 Mulching P lug Both the mulc hing baffl e and the mulch ing plug are used only for mulching purposes . Instead of co llectin g the grass clippin gs in a grass catc her, your mowe r has the option of recircula ting the clippi ngs back to t he lawn. T his is call ed mulc hing.
11 Adjusting Thr o ttle Speed WARNING: Never attempt to adjust the engine ’ s thrott le speed while th e engine is running. Always stop the e ngine by releasing the blade control handle before adjusting the engine ’ s t hrottle speed. The throt tle cont rol leve r is loca ted on the righ t side of the en gine.
12 • Remo ve the hairpi n clip s from the w eld p ins on the handle br ackets. Pre ss outward on the legs of the lower h andle, and remo ve i t from the mower . • Turn the lower handle ar ound so the n otches on the bottom of the lower hand le are facing for ward as shown in F igure 11.
13 Engine A list of ke y maint enance jobs requ ired for good perform ance by the mower is given belo w. Follow the accompa nying engi ne manual for detailed list and instruc tions. • Change eng ine oil after the fi rst two operati ng hours and every 25 operati ng hours the reafter.
14 • Turn mower on its side making sure that the air filter and the ca rburetor are up . Fig ure 1 6 • Also lu bricate the bol t holes, bolt and the inner surfac e of the nuts. • Install the blade a dapter on th e pulley with the “ star ” away from th e pulley.
15 • Loosen th e cente r hex bolt a nd lower the bla de and engin e pulley until there is adeq uate cl earance to move the bel t past the belt keep er. • Remove the belt f rom the e ngine pu lley and arou nd the blade.
