Installation Page 11 INSTALLATION The computer trea ts the interac tive pen display a s two separa te devices (t he display and the pen tablet). Ther efore, the inst allation proc ess is completed in two stag es: • First install as a display . • Then install as a pen tablet.
Installation Page 12 STEP 1: DISPLAY INSTALLATION In this step, Cintiq is installed as a display on your system. Important: Never connect or disc onnect the vide o or power ca bles while your c omputer or Cin tiq are powered on . This can damage the display or video card.

T o identify the unit as a pen display and install the color calibration pr ofile: For Macintosh , a color profile is added to your color manageme nt system during the driver software installation process.
Installation Page 15 8. As necessary , configure the display control panel settings fo r the proper size and color resolution. See the “Pr oduct specification s” on page 59 f or details about the maximum (native) re solution and other resolution sizes that can be used with Cintiq.
Installation Page 16 STEP 2: PEN TABLET INSTALLATION In this step, Cintiq is in stalled as a pen tablet. USB CABLE INSTALLATION 1. First plug the USB cable into the USB connector located on the converter u nit. 2. Plug the other end o f the cable into an available USB port on your com puter or into a USB h ub.
Installation Page 17 SOFTWAR E INSTALLATION Important: Y ou MUST install the W acom pen tablet driv er software for correct pen-on-screen functionality . Save your work and close all ope n applications. T emporarily disable any virus protection programs.
Working with your Cintiq Page 18 WORKING WITH YOUR CINTIQ USING THE GRIP PEN The pen is cor dless, battery-fr ee, and sensitive to th e tilt and pressure you exert upon it.
Working with your Cintiq Page 19 BASIC PEN OPERATIONS Positioning : T o position the screen curso r , move the pen slightly above th e Cintiq display screen without touc hing the screen surface. Press the pen tip on the display screen to make a selection.

Working with your Cintiq Page 21 PEN DISPLAY CONTR OLS The customizable Expr essKeys and T ouch Strips enable you to impr ove your workflow in graph ics or other applicati ons. While using the pen with your dominant hand, you c an simultaneously use your other hand to o perate the ExpressKeys or T ouch Strip.
Working with your Cintiq Page 22 USING THE EXPR ESSKEYS As you work with yo ur pen on the display surface, press an ExpressKey to togg le between tools or change tool properties. Y ou can work wit h the default settings, or choose f rom any of the oth er available functions.
Working with your Cintiq Page 23 USING THE T OUCH STRIPS The customizable T ouch Strips can be operated in several dif fer ent ways: • Standard operation : Slide your f inger up or do wn to zoom, sc roll, or issue the as signed functio n. Y ou can do this with your secondary hand while us ing your primary hand to work with the Grip Pen.
Working with your Cintiq Page 24 SETTING UP YOUR WORK AR EA T o minim ize fatigu e, organize your work area so you can work c omfortably . Posit ion Cintiq, th e Grip Pen, and your keybo ard so they are easily accessible w ithout unnecess ary reaching.
Working with your Cintiq Page 25 ADJUSTING DISPLAY INCLINE • T o open the display st and, locate and slide the stan d latch to releas e the stand. Unfo ld the stand from the pen display casing. • T o clo se the stan d, gently fo ld the stand back into the closed po sition until the lat ch catches t he stand.
Working with your Cintiq Page 26 ROTATING THE TABLET When the pen display stand is in the c losed position, t he unit can be rotated. As you w ork, position Cintiq by the main body; it w ill move on the rotation pivot.
Customizing Page 27 CUSTOMIZING After you master the basics of using your Grip Pen on the Cintiq pen display , you may want to customize the w ay the pen or pen display works. The W acom T ablet control panel makes it ea sy to customize Cintiq an d the pen.

Customizing Page 29 CALIBRATING CINTIQ Y ou must calibrate the pen d isplay in order to a lign the screen cursor with the position of th e pen on the display scr een. This is r equire d to compensate for v iewing angle, and to adjust for parallax caused by the display screen cover g lass and coating.
Customizing Page 30 ADJUSTING CLOCK AND PHASE (VGA ONLY) Some computers and video cards may not allow the au to-sync functio n to fully work when Cintiq is first connecte d. If some por tion of text appears blurred, open the OSD menu , go to the VGA I MAGE menu, and sele ct A UTO A DJUST .
Customizing Page 31 ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY FACTORY PR ESETS, AUTO-SYNC, AND COLOR CALIBRATION Factory pr esets : For optimal display quality , set your video c ard to the maximum (native) r esolution that can be used w ith Cintiq. See t he “Product specifications” on pag e 59 for deta ils.
Customizing Page 32 ON SCREEN DISPLAY (OSD) SETTINGS The Cintiq OSD f unction enables you to adjust and o ptimize a variety o f display settings at the touch of a button. 2. Selection buttons Use the up or down buttons to toggle between menu options, and to incre ase or decrease the value of a selected setting.
Customizing Page 33 The basic pr ocess for working with the OSD is as follows: • Press the M ENU button t o open the OSD main menu. • Press the up or down buttons to toggle between the main menu icons. Then press the E NTER button to choo se the highlighted icon.
Customizing Page 34 When you open th e On Screen Display , the main menu ico ns are displayed. Language. Allows you to choose the language in which the OSD menu will be dis played. D ISPLAY menu options ar e as follows: •B RIGHTNESS . Incr eases or decr ea ses the image brightness.
Customizing Page 35 C OLOR menu options are as follows: •T EMPERATU RE . Enables you to adjust the pen display color temperature. Pr ovides color temperature settings for 6500° and 9300° Kelvin, as well as D IRECT and C USTOM options. •D IRE CT displays the colors directly from the video car d without any adjustment.
Customizing Page 36 POWER SAVING Cintiq conforms to VE SA po wer saving guidelines. When using Cintiq with a Display Pow er Management Signa ling (DPMS) compliant computer or vide o card, the display will automatica lly comply with th e below power sa ving parameters.
Troubleshooting Page 37 TROUBLESHOOTING Most of the time your inte ractive pen display will work flawlessly . But if you are having trouble, W acom reco mmends you do the following : 1. If the Wacom tablet driver failed to load properly , first perfo rm the recommended action in any error message that may ap pear on your sc reen.
Troubleshooting Page 38 2. If there is no display: • Make sure that your computer is tur ned on. The power LED will light blue when the proper video signal is received, and orange if th ere is no video signal or if the computer is in a power saving mode.
Troubleshooting Page 39 T ESTING CONTROLS AND INPUT TOOLS If the Grip Pen, or the Cintiq Expr essKeys or T ouch Strips do not work as you expect, it is a good ide a to first chec k the assigned functions or reset t hem to their default condi tions.
Troubleshooting Page 40 T ESTING A PEN 1. While observing the P OINTING D EVICE I NFO c olumn, bring your pen within 5 mm (0.2 in ch) of the display screen. A value for P ROX I M IT Y , th e D EVICE N AME , D EV ICE T YPE , and a D EVICE S/N (serial number) should be displayed.

For more information ab out color issues, se e the docu mentation tha t came with your operating sy stem or applicatio ns.
Troubleshooting Page 42 An “invalid mode” message briefly appears on your display screen. • The input signal frequency is incorrectly set or not co mpatible with Cintiq. Set the refresh rate to a vertical frequency that is compatible with Cint iq.
Troubleshooting Page 43 VGA PROBLEMS The display ripples or f lickers. • Open the OSD men u, go to the I MAGE menu, and select the A UTO A DJUST option. If necessary , manu ally adjust the clock and phase settings. • V erify t hat the dis play adapter or video card matches the specifications for Cintiq.
Troubleshooting Page 44 PEN TABLET TR OUBLESHOOTING If you enco unter pro blems with the tablet portion of your Cintiq, see the f ollowing tables. Y our problem may be described here, and you can try the solution offe red. Be sure you r efer to the Cintiq Read Me file for the latest information.
Troubleshooting Page 45 Double-clicking is difficult. Be sure you are quic kly tapping the display scr een twice in the sam e place on the pen display active area. W acom recommends using the side switch to double-click. Open the W acom T ablet cont rol panel an d go to the P EN tab.
Troubleshooting Page 46 The pen side switch does not work. Be sure you are using the pen th at originally c ame with your pen display , or an Intuos3 pen. Other pens may not functio n properly . Be sure you press the side switch when the pen tip is with in 5 mm (0.
Troubleshooting Page 47 The line you are drawing does not lin e up with the location of the scr een cursor in paint applications. T o fun ction properly , s ome applicatio ns requir e that the pen is set to P EN mode. Mak e sure the pen has n ot been toggled to M OUSE mode.
Troubleshooting Page 48 WINDOWS-SPECIFIC PROBLEMS Y ou suspect the Cintiq pref erence s may be corrupted, or want to mak e certain tha t all settings are at their fact ory defaults. Use the W acom T ablet Prefer ence File Utility to w ork with your prefer ences.
Troubleshooting Page 49 MACINTOSH-SPECIFIC PR OBLEMS At startup, a dialog box appears telling you that either the driver fa iled to load or the tablet preferences have not yet been cr eated. The tablet portion of the pen displa y was not detected at startup.
Troubleshooting Page 50 Ink does not wor k correctly with Cintiq. There may be a problem with the In k prefer ences. Remove the damaged prefer ence files as follows . They will be recreated when you enable handwriting recognition. 1. Open the S YSTEM P RE F E REN C ES pane, choose S HOW A LL and select I NK .

Appendix Page 53 APPENDIX CARING FOR CINTIQ Keep the Grip Pen a nd your Cintiq LCD screen surface clean. Dust and dirt particles can stick to the pen and cause excessive wear to the display screen surface. Regular cleaning will help to pr olong the life of your LC D screen surface and pen.
Appendix Page 54 REPLACING THE PEN TIP The pen tip (nib) will wear with normal use. Exce ssive pressure will cause the nib to wear sooner . When the nib ge ts too short o r develops a sharp edge, replace it with one of t he extra nibs that came with the pen.
