S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 5 S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE T o install the softwar e: 1. S tart Microsoft Windo ws and make sure no other applications ar e running . 2. Insert Disc 1 into your computer ’ s CD-R OM drive. No t e : Y ou must install the software befor e connecting the scanner to your computer .
6 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE When the CD starts, the Vision eer Installation window opens automatically . 3. On the Ma in Menu, click I nstall P roducts . The next window lis ts the software that is available to install on your computer .

10 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 19. Click Nex t . During installation you will see this window asking you to select one of the images for your Color S pace setting. The Color S pace setting sets the gamma value for the scanner so scanned items look good on your monitor .

12 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE P OWER S UPPLY AND USB C ABLE Y ou may now connect the scanner’ s power supply and USB cable. The USB cable plugs into any availabl e USB port on the computer . Check your computer ’ s manual for USB port locations.
S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE P OWER S UPPLY AND USB C ABLE 13 Attach the USB Y -Cable to th e P ow er Su pply and Connect the Computer The cable pro vided with the scanner is called a USB “Y -cable,” and you will need to connect it to the scanner , computer , and power supply .
14 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The USB symbol, as seen in the abo ve diagram, identifies the location of the USB port on your computer . If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you are plugging it in correctly . Do not force the plug into the connection.
S TEP 3: C ALIBRATE THE S CANNER 15 S TEP 3: C ALIBRATE THE S CANNER 1. After the computer loads the appropriate software to run the scanner , the F ound New Har dware W izard windo w opens. 2. Y ou will need the calibration pa ge that you received with your scanner for the calibration process.
16 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 5. The Calibration window opens. 6. Insert the calibration page into the page feed in the direction of the arrows on the page. The scanner grabs the page and feeds it through the scanner . The scanner will pass the page back and forth several times.
S TEP 3: C ALIBRATE THE S CANNER 17 8. Remo ve the page and re place it in its plastic bag. Do not discar d the calibration page. Y ou may need it periodically to calibrate the scanner to keep it operating at peak performance. 9. Click Nex t on the Calibration window .
18 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 11. When you ar e certain that the software has completely loaded, return to the “Complete the in stallation by connecting your hardware ” window and click OK . 12. N ow click Close on the I nstallation Complete window .
S TEP 3: C ALIBRATE THE S CANNER 19 that may be installed, please see the Scanner R eadme file on the CD. See the section “View the User G uides ” on page 22 to open the Readme file. 13. If you also selected the full OmniP age Pr o software for installation, a window then tells you to insert the second CD to install it.

A DDITIONAL A PPLICATIONS FOR Y OUR S CA NNER 21 ■ ArcSoft P h otoI mpression is a set of software tools for enhancing your scanned photos. Y ou can use PhotoImpression to change a photo ’ s brightness an d contrast, sharpen t he image, change its color tones, remo ve r ed-eye from pictur es of faces, and crop and resize the image.

R EGISTER Y OUR S CANNER 25 Scanning Y ou have several different scanning options with your V isioneer S trobe XP 220 scanner . Each method sc ans equally well, so us e the one appropriate for the item you are scanning.
26 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING B ASICS S CAN A D OCUMENT T o scan a document: 1. Align the page with the alignment arr ows. Misaligned pages will not feed into the scanner pr operly . 2. Insert the page face up and feed it straight into the page feed.
S CANNING B ASICS 27 P APER R ETURN O PTIONS The position of the P aper Return d etermines the path of the scanned document. Y ou can set the paper return to feed the document back towar ds you, or straight through the scanner . ■ T o have the scanned document r eturned back towards y ou, move the P aper Return to the Down position.
28 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CAN A P HOTO The photo sleeve you received wit h your scanner is for sc anning photographs. T o scan a photo using the photo sleev e: 1. Separate the clear plastic sleev e fr om the pape r backing and slide the photo into the sleeve so it fit s snugly at the corners.
S CAN U SING O NE T OUCH 29 S CAN U SING O NE T OUCH 1. Align the document between the alignment arrows and insert it, face up, into the page feed slot. 2. The A utoLaunch technology senses that a document is inserted into the page feed and starts the scanning.

The OneT ouch P anel opens with the description of the current settings for th e scanner . The OneT ouch Pr operties window also opens so you can choose new settings before scanning.
T HE O NE T OUCH P ANEL 31 T HE O NE T OUCH P ANEL U se the OneT ouch P anel when you want to change the scan settings or reset the scanner ’ s hardwar e propertie s. If AutoLaunch is off , you can also scan from the O neT ouch P anel. See the sect ion, “Scan from OneT ouch when AutoLaunch is Off ” on page 158.

T o configure the list of available applications, click the Options tab at the top of the dialog box and select the desired options.

36 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Select Destinations —Select this option to individually choose the types of applications to include in the list of Destination Applications. Check the bo xes for the type of application to include.
T HE O NE T OUCH P ROPERTIES W INDOW 37 Cr eate copies of scanned documents —S ometimes the image of a scanned document is only saved as a temporar y file until its Destination Application is finished using it. In those cases you may want an additional, permanent c opy saved on your hard drive.

42 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE P APER P ORT P ROPERTIE S These properties apply to P aperP ort, and are for designating the folder to receiv e your scanned items. 1. Select the P aperP or t folder where y ou want the file of the scanned image to be located.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 43 T EXT D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to Microsoft W ord , Microsoft E xcel ® , and the other applications indicated by thei r icons in the list. The properties apply to the Optical Character R ecognition (OCR) settings for the applications.
44 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The Add T ext Based Link dialog box opens. 3. Click Browse to find the application y ou want to add to the list. When you select the application using the B ro wse button, steps 1 and 2 on the dialog box are automatically filled in, and the application icon appears in step 3.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 45 I MAGE D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to Microsoft P aint and other image processing applications. 1. Click in the Color document handling settings boxes for the options you want. The options will apply to all the applications in the group.
46 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. T o add another application to the list, click the Add Application button. See the steps on page 43 to add an application to the list. 3. Click OK . 4. Click Refres h on the OneT ouch P ropert ies window .
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 47 S TORAGE P ROPERTIES These properties apply to the special Destination Application named T ran sfer to Storage, indicated by the folder icon. This Destination Applicat ion is designed f or archiv ing docume nts with your scanne r .
48 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. Click the Browse button to specify the location to stor e the scanned documents, or type a location directly into the bo x. If you are scanning to a shared networ k drive, it must be a mapped drive.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 49 E M AIL P ROPERTIES These properties apply to email applications so you can specify the folder for documents you want to a ttach to an email message.
50 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 3. If you need to change your email client, or any other internet options, click the Internet Options button. The Window s Internet Options Control P anel opens. Click the P rograms tab and choose a new email client from the Email list.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 51 S ELECTING F ORMAT O PTIONS The F ormat options that you select determines the file format of the scanned documen t. Appropr iate format options ar e file types available for the type of Destination Application s elected.
52 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE used to put multi-page documents on w eb sites as PDF-readable files. As with the JPEG option, the PDF fo rmat can be reduced in size or quality . T o select a JP EG or PDF file size: 1. Select JPG or PDF as the format.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 53 T EXT F ORMATS Selecting the text format option also selects OCR processing as an automatic step for scanning. Therefor e, when you scan a document with the text format selected, the text portions of the document are automatically converted to editable text.

S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 55 Comma Delimited —The .csv file format; used for database or spreadsheet data with fie lds separated by commas. When the document is conver ted into edi tab le text by the OCR pr ocess, the fields are main tained so you can c opy and paste them to a database or spreadsheet application.
56 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE U se MR C for documents with hard er-to-read text or low er-quality graphics to get th e best possible scan outp ut image. The Use MR C option is available for sPDF and PDF . 4. T o change the OCR settings, choose OCR Options.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 57 S CANNING WITH O PTICAL C HARACTER R ECOGNITION (OCR) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts text and numbe rs on a scanned page into editab le text and numbers. Y ou can then work with the text and numbers to edit, spellcheck , change font or type size , sort, calculate, and so forth.

S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 59 T HE OCR T AB The options shown on the OCR tab windo w are for spellchecking scanned text, replacing mi ssing or unrecogniz ed characters, and setting the speed and quality levels of the OCR processing. 1.

F or example, you might have different dictionari es for separate work projects, especially if each project uses differ ent acronyms and terminology .

The Add N ew User D ictionary window opens. 9. Click the drop-down arr ow for F iles of type and choose Te x t F i l e s (.

S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 71 S CANNING WITH S PDF OR N PDF AND S EARCHING FOR T EXT Searchable PDF (sPDF) and N orma l PDF (nPDF) are special forms of an Adobe PDF file. sPDF converts scanned text into the PDF format with text search and OCR capabilities.
72 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 220 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The settings now sho w your page format selection. 5. Right- click on the tex t icon ag ain and choose one of the image quality settings, Minim ize Si ze, Normal , or Ma xim ize Qu al ity . 6. Choose a Scan Configuration.

Click the Ne w button. If you want to start from the set tings of another configuration, select the configuration, then click the Copy button.

C REATING A N EW S CAN C ONFIGURATION 77 Reso lu tio n —Drag the slider to the right or left to adjust the dots per inch (dpi) of the resolution . The maximum resolution is 600 dpi; the minimum is 50 dpi. The higher the dpi setting, the sharper and clearer the scanned image.

Siz e —Click St a nd a rd , click the menu arrow and choose a page siz e from the list, or click Cu s t om and enter the horizontal and vertical page dimensions in the box es.
C REATING A N EW S CAN C ONFIGURATION 79 ■ Reduce M oire P atterns —M oire patterns are wavy , rippled lines that sometimes appear on the sc anned images of photographs or illustrations, particularly newspa per and magazine illustrations. Sel ec ti ng Reduce M oire P atterns will limit or eliminate moir e patterns in the scanned image.
