12 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Installing B EFORE Y OU B EGIN Please make sur e of the following before you begin installation: ■ If your computer has AntiVirus or AntiSpywar e softwar e running, you may see messages during instal lation asking you to allow the installation to proce ed.
S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 13 S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE T o install the softwar e: 1. S tart Microsoft Windo ws and make sure no other applications ar e running . 2. Insert the I nstallation CD into your computer ’ s CD-R OM drive. F or the S trobe XP 300 only: In se rt Disc 1 .
14 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE When the CD starts, the Vision eer Installation window opens automatically . 3. On the Installation M enu, select Install P r oducts . No t e : If the CD does not start , check the following: ■ Make sure the CD drive ’ s door is completely shut.
S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 15 The next window lis ts the software that is available to install on your computer . 4. Select ScanSoft P aperP ort and Scanner Driv er . 5. Click Install N o w . The Pa perP or t software will load first. 6. The Select Language windo w ope ns for the P aperP ort software.

S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 17 12. Select the option y ou want. ■ OneT ouch 4.0 Scan Environment + TW AIN Driver —This is the re commended installation. It installs the OneT ouch 4.0 software which pro vides the necessary driver software for the scanner .
18 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 13. Click Nex t . During installation you will see this window asking you to select one of the images for your Color S pace setting. The Color S pace setting sets the gamma value for the scanner so scanned items look good on your monitor .
S TEP 1: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 19 If you ar e installing the scanner on a W indows 2000 computer: During the software installatio n, this “Digital Signatur e N ot F ound ” message may appear several times. Each time this message appears, y ou can disregard it and click Ye s .
20 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 15. Click the scanner that y ou are installing. If you want to see mor e about the scanner before installing it, click the Learn M or e button. Y ou will then see a window that explains ho w to connect the scanner to your computer .
S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 21 S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER Y our Visioneer scanner connects to any available USB port. Check your computer’ s manual for USB port locations.
22 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE C ONNECT THE S TROBE XP 200 S CANNER The cable pro vided with the scanner is called a USB “Y -cable,” and you will need to connect it to the sc anner , computer , and a power outlet.
S TEP 2: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 23 C ONNECT THE S TROBE XP 300 S CANNER 1. U sing the on-screen window as your guide, plug the AC adaptor cable into the pow er jack on scanne r , and then plug the AC adapter into an electrical outlet.

S TEP 3: C ALIBRATE THE S CANNER 25 T o calibrate the scanner: 1. S trobe XP 300 only : Close the scanner ’ s paper return so the calibration paper will feed straight through the scanne r . S trobe XP 200 only: M ov e the scanner ’ s P aper Return into the U p position so the calibration paper will feed straight through the scanner .
26 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 4. Remo ve the sheet and r eplace it in its plastic bag. Do not discar d the calibration sheet. Y ou may need it periodically to calibrate the scanner to keep it operating at peak performance.

When you ar e certain that the software has completely loaded, return to the “Complete the in stallation by connecting your hardware ” wi ndow and click OK to complete the installation process. Y ou can also click Mo re to see a q uick overview a bout accessing and navigating the OneT ouch Button P anel.

S TROBE XP 200 P APER R ETURN O PTIONS The position of the P aper R eturn d etermines the path of the scanne d document. Y ou can set the paper return to feed the document back towar ds you, or straight through the scanner .

S ET U P Y OUR S CANNER 35 S TROBE XP 300 S TAND Y our scanner is designed to fit wi thin easy reach of your keyboard. The stand that comes with the scanne r is specifically designed so the scanner easily fits between yo ur computer keyboar d and monitor .
36 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING ON THE G O Because the R oadW arrior , S trobe XP 10 0, and XP 300 can draw power from the computer through the USB ca ble, you can use your scanner on an airplane, at a remote job site, in your car , or anywhere else where an electric outlet is not available.
S ET U P Y OUR S CANNER 37 C ONFIGURE THE S TROB E XP 300 AC P OWER A DAPTER The S trobe XP 300 AC P ower A dapter can be configured to operate with a variety of electric outlet plug configurations that are used in various countries. The three plug adapters that y ou receiv ed with your scanner are interchangeable on the AC P ower A dapter .

S trobe XP 200 only : insert the paper face up . ■ S trobe XP 300 only : Y our scanner can s can both sides of a page (called duplex scanning), so either side ca n be face down because both s ides are scanned.
S CANNING B ASICS 39 S CANNING P HOTOS AND T HIN P APER I TEMS The two transparent sleeves for the S trobe XP 300 scanner ar e specifically designed for scanning thin paper items, such as credit car ds receipts, newspaper articles, and reta il receipts, especially when using duplex (two-sided) scanning.
40 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o scan a thin paper item us ing the S trobe XP 300 sleev es: 1. Slide the thin paper item into the appr opriate sleeve. 2. Adjust the P aper Guides for the s ize of the sleeve. 3. Insert the sleeve with the item inside it.
S CANNING B ASICS 41 Scanning If you sele cted the recommended F ull Install option for y our scanner’ s driver you have several differ ent options to scan with your Visionee r scanner . Each method scans equa lly well, so use the one with appropriate options for the item you are scanning.
42 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CAN U SING A UTO L AUNCH When you insert an item into the sc anner , it is automatically scanned and the image is sent to a softwa r e application on your computer . T o scan using AutoLaunch: 1. Align a document with the P aper G uides and insert it into the paper feed slot.
S CAN U SING A UTO L AUNCH 43 C HECK THE S CAN S ETTINGS B EFORE S CANNING WITH A UTO L AUNCH P ress the button on the top of the scanner . The OneT ouch P anel appears with the description of the curre nt settings for th e scanner . The OneT ouch Pr operties window also appears so you can choose new settings before scanning.
44 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T URN A UTO L AUNCH O FF /O N In some instances, you may not want to use t he scanner’ s Aut oLaunch technology . In that case, you can turn it off so the scanner will not automatically scan when you insert a document.
S CAN U SING A UTO L AUNCH 45 The Har dware P roperties window opens. 3. Click the Pr o p e r t i e s button. The Device Configuration P roperties windo w for the Visioneer S trobe XP opens.
46 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 4. U ncheck the option, E nable the generation of ev ents when paper is inserted into the scanner . This turns off the AutoLaunch feature. 5. Click OK , then click OK on the Har dware P ropert ies window .
S CAN FROM THE O NE T OUCH P ANEL 47 S CAN FROM THE O NE T OUCH P ANEL Y ou can also scan from the computer screen us ing the OneT ouch panel. 1. P ress the button on the top of the scanner , or click the OneT ouch icon. U se this window to select a new destination application, file format, and scan configuration.
48 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. When you ’ re ready to scan, align a document betw een the P aper Guides if your scanner has them, and ins ert the document into the paper feed slot. Insert face down to scan a single side. T o scan both sides, either side can be face up.
S CAN FROM THE O NE T OUCH P ANEL 49 U SING THE O NE T OUCH P ANEL The OneT ouch panel is also your on-screen set of cont rols for the scanner . The OneT ouch panel shows information about the scanner and its settings. 1. T o open the OneT ouch panel, press the button on the top of the scanner , or click the OneT ouch icon.

Y ou can also click the Ed it button or double click the configuration to see more de tailed information about the selected configuration. Select F ormat and P age(s) —A set of file formats for the scanned image.

The scan configuration list is preset for the application you select in the Select Destination list. If you select a differ ent application, the configurations are for that application.

S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 57 P APER P ORT P ROPERTIE S These properties apply to P aperP ort, and are for designating the folder to receiv e your scanned items. 1. Select the P aperP or t folder wher e you want the file of the scanned image to be located.
58 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T EXT D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to Microsoft W ord, Mi crosoft Ex cel ® , Adobe Acrobat R eader , and the other applicat ions indicated by their icons in the list. The properties apply to the OCR settings for t he applications.

S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 61 Convert Bitmaps to JPEG —JPEG files can be compre ssed to produce smaller file sizes and, ther efore, shorter tran smission times. U se this option to pro vide that compression capability to image files.
62 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 1. Click the S torage Layout opt ions you want. All documents a re i n the root —The scanned documents are saved in the root of the folder spec ified in the St orage Location.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 63 E M AIL P ROPERTIES These properties apply to email applications so you can specify the folder for documents that you will attach to an email mes sage.
64 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. If you are using A OL on your computer , and the folder name for AOL is incorre ct, click the Bro wse b utton and find the correct AOL fo lde r . F or scanned images to be auto-attached to a blank email address, you must have the specific folde r location AOL uses to find the attachments.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 65 S ELECTING P AGE F ORMAT O PTIONS The P age F ormat options that you sele ct determines the file format of the scanned document. Appropriate page format options and file types are available for the type of Destination Application selected.
66 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE I MAGE F ORMATS Select an image file format for phot os, artwork or other documents that you want to save as images. BMP and TIFF are standar d image file formats generally used if you want to do additional image processing, such as photo touch-up or color corr ection.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 67 3. Choose the file size/image quality option for your scanned images. Mini mi ze Si ze —Smallest file size, lowest image quality . No r m a l —Medium file siz e, some loss of image quality . Maximum Q uality —Largest file size, no loss of image quality .
68 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o select a file type for the text for mat: 1. Sele ct the Destina tion Applic ation. 2. Right- click on the tex t format icon . A menu appears. The following figure sho ws samples for different formats.

S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 71 Select Destinations —Select this option to individually choose the types of applications to include in the list of Destination Applications.
72 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Cr eate copies of scanned documents —S ometimes the image of a scanned document is only saved as a temporar y file until its Destination Application is finished using it. In those cases you may want an additional, permanent c opy saved on your hard drive.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 73 Fo l d e r C o p y O p t i o n s —This section of the dialog box sets the location for copies of your scanned documents and how you want to group them. All copies of your scanned documents, regar dless of type of Destination Application, ar e saved in this folder .
74 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE C REATING A N EW S CAN C ONFIGURATION The scan configurations are where you select the scanning r esolution, brightness, mode (color , black&white, or grayscale), and a number of other settings.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 75 text editing applications. Thus, you ca n create specific sets of scan configurations for specific functi ons and they appear only when appropriate. 3. Click the Ne w button. If you want to start from the set tings of another configuration, select the configuration, then click the Copy button.
76 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 5. Select scan settings for the new scan configuration. Mode —S elect a scanning mode: ■ Blac k& Wh ite to scan in black and white. F or example, letters and memos are usually scanned in black and white.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 77 7. Click the Pa g e S e t t i n g s tab to select page settings. Size —Click Sta n da rd , click the menu arrow and choose a page size from the list, or click Cus t o m and enter the horizontal and vertical page dimensions in the boxes.
78 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE ■ Red uc e Moi re Patt ern s —Moire patterns ar e wavy , rippled lines that sometimes appear on the sc anned images of photographs or illustrations, particularly newspa per and magazine illustrations.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 79 ■ Dupl ex —Scan both sides of the page if your scanner has this capability . If this option is not selected, the scanner wi ll only scan the side of the page facing do wn when you insert it into the scanner .
80 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 9. Drag the sliders to the left and ri ght to change the color settings. As you do, the image changes to sho w the effects of the new settings.
S ELECTING N EW O NE T OUCH S CAN S ETTINGS 81 T HE D EVICE S ETTINGS T AB A Device Settings tab appears on the Scan Configurations dialog box when your selected Destination Appl ication sends the scanned image to a printer , fax application, or othe r device .
82 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Collate copies —If you ’ re printing more than one page, collate the copies. Enter the number of copies in the Copies box. Advanc ed —Click to see additional settings for the device. The dialog that appears is specific to the device.
