With your scanner , you can quickly scan paper documents, color photos, film strips, film negatives, and transpar ency sheets to place their electronic images on y our computer .

STEP 1: I NSTALLING THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 5 Installing This section of the guide contains instructions for connecting y our OneT ouch 8820 scanner to a USB port. The P aperP ort CD includes all the necessary installation files, as well as P aperP ort software files and other softwar e files.

F ollow the instructions on the screen to install the P aperP ort software on your computer . During installation, a message tells y ou to connect the scanner to the computer .
STEP 2: C ONNECTING THE S CANNER 7 STEP 2: C ONNECTING THE S CANNER The OneT ouch 8820 scanner connects to any av ailable USB port. Check your computer ’ s user’ s guide for its USB port locations. T o connect the OneT ouch 8820 scanner to a USB por t: 1.

Y our 8820 scanner is shipped with the TP A cable already plugged into the TP A port, however , if the cable came loose during shipping, you must plug it into the port secur ely .
STEP 2: C ONNECTING THE S CANNER 9 If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you are plugging it in correctly . Do not for ce the plug into the connection. 5. Plug the po wer adapter cable into the po wer jack on the back of the scanner . 6.

Click the F inish button. The scanner ’ s status light is green when the scanner and computer are communicating pr operly .
STEP 3: C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER 11 3. Choose About from the shortcut menu. A dialog box confirms that the scanner is pr operly connected. 4. Click OK to close the dialog box. That’ s it. Y our scanner is ready to scan. See “Scanning P aper Items with the O neT ouch Buttons ” on page 14.
12 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE • Is the scanner ’ s locking tab in the locked position? Slide the locking tab to the unlocked position. I f you tried to scan with the scanner locked, you must r estart your computer after unlocking the scanner .

S CANNING T RANSPARENCIES 17 S CANNING T RANSPARENCIES Y ou can scan all sorts of transparencies with your 8820 O neT ouch scanner , including 35mm film strips and slides, large format (4" by 5") film, and presentation slides (5" b y 7") typically used with overhead projectors.
18 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. F ind the appropriate transparency mask for the item y ou ’ re scanning. The masks are in a pr otective plastic bag with y our scanner . 3. P osition the large mask (the one for 5" b y 7" transpar encies) on the scanner glass.
S CANNING T RANSPARENCIES 19 5. T o scan a 35mm slide, place the 35mm mask in the center of the larger mask, and then put the slide into one of the openings.
20 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 7. T o scan a 4" by 5" transpar ency , place the 4" by 5" mask in the center of the larger mask, and then center the transpar ency . Y ou ’ re now ready to scan the transpar ency .
S CANNING T RANSPARENCIES 21 3. Click P review to preview the image and, if necessary , adjust the various settings, then click Scan when the image is what y ou want.

C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 25 Select F ormat and P age(s) —a set of options for selecting a format for the scanned image and whether to scan a single page or multiple pages. The formats are bitmap , JPEG, and P aperP ort. U se P aperP ort for scanning any item.
26 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S ELECTING N EW O PTIONS FOR THE B UTTONS Y ou can select a new destination application, configuration, and image format for a scanner button to optimiz e it for the type of scanning you want to do.
C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 27 C REATING N EW C ONFIGURATIONS Y ou cannot change settings such as brightness or contrast of the pr eset configurations. T o scan with settings other than those offer ed by the preset configurations, y ou must first create a new configuration and then use it to scan.

F or example, letters and memos ar e usually scanned in black and white. Select G rayscale to scan items such as documents containing drawings or black and white photographs.

Enter the horizontal and vertical page dimensions in the box es. AutoC rop —S elect this option to let the scanner automatically determine the size of the item being scanned.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 37 S CANNING AN I TEM WITH THE T WAIN B UTTON The following steps explain how to scan an item using the T wain button in the P aperP ort software. Y ou can scan many types of paper items, from small business car ds to A4-sized pages.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 39 T o scan manually: 1. On the Scan M anager P ro, select a configuration for the scan. F or example, select Color Configurations and then select C ustom to scan a color item with the pr eset C ustom scan settings.

A DJUSTING THE S ETTINGS ON THE S CAN M ANAGER P RO 43 S AVING A N EW P ROFILE If you adjust the scan settings y ou can save them as a pr ofile for later use. T o sav e a new profile: 1. Select a configuration on the Scan M anager Pr o, such as Color/ Custom.

T o use one of the preset r esolutions for typical scanned items, click one of the options in the list. F or example, to set the resolution for scanning a business car d, select Business Car d (OCR).
A DJUSTING THE S ETTINGS ON THE S CAN M ANAGER P RO 47 A DJUSTING THE B RIGHTNESS AND C ONTRAST Sometimes an item is scanned with the brightness and contrast set to be too light or too dark. F or example, a note written with a light pencil may need to be scanned darker to impr o ve legibility .

50 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o adjust the color settings: 1. F rom the Channel drop-down menu, choose the individual color (Red, G r een, or Blue) that y ou want to use as the basis for adjusting the image, or choose All to adjust them together .
A DJUSTING THE S ETTINGS ON THE S CAN M ANAGER P RO 51 A DJUSTING O UTPUT S IZE The item you ’ re scanning may not fill the scanner glass. I n that case you can preview the item and use the A uto T rim option to automatically eliminate the unwanted sections of the image.

The scanner senses the edges of the item on the glass and draws a dotted line around the image in the windo w . Check to make sure the dotted line encloses the image that y ou want.
A DJUSTING THE S ETTINGS ON THE S CAN M ANAGER P RO 53 3. P ut the pointer on the image and drag the mouse to enclose the section you want in the scanned image. As you drag the mouse, a dotted bo x appears on the image and the size settings change to r eflect the new output siz e area.
