I NSTALLING TO A USB P ORT 5 Part 1: Installing I NSTALLING TO A USB P ORT This section of the guide contains instructions for connecting y our OneT ouch scanner to a USB port. Please see “I nstalling to a P arallel P ort” on page 10 to connect the scanner to a parallel por t.

During installation, a message tells y ou to connect the scanner to the computer . 4. F ollow the steps in the next section to connect the scanner .
I NSTALLING TO A USB P ORT 7 T o connect the OneT ouch scanner to a USB port: 1. Plug one end of the USB cable into an av ailable USB port. Some newer computers also hav e keyboards with USB ports. Y ou can plug the scanner into the keyboard instead of the USB port on the computer .

Y our computer r ecognizes that a scanner has been plugged into the USB port and automatically loads the appr opriate software fr om the CD to run the scanner .

STEP 1: C ONNECTING TO A P ARALLEL P ORT The OneT ouch scanner connects to any av ailable parallel (LPT) port on the back of your computer .
I NSTALLING TO A P ARALLEL P ORT 11 5. Plug the other end of the scanner cable into the parallel por t on the back of your computer . On some older computers the serial port and parallel port both have 25-pin connectors that fit the scanner cable. P lease make sure you plug the scanner cable into a parallel port.

After the P aperP ort software is installed on your computer , you can click the appropriate buttons on the CD to install the other applications on the CD or print the P aperP ort User ’s G uide .
C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER 15 T o check the status of the scanner: 1. Place the mouse pointer on the scanner icon in the W indows taskbar . 2. Right-click the icon. The shortcut menu appears. 3. Choose About from the shortcut menu. A dialog box confirms that the scanner is pr operly connected.
16 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8100 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE I F THE S CANNER I S N OT P ROPERLY C ONNECTED If the scanner icon on the Windows taskbar has a r ed “X” through it, the scanner is not properly connected. Check for one of these possible problems: • Is a cable loose or not plugged in secur ely? Inspect all cable connections.
C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER 17 T o connect the scanner: 1. After checking for all the abo ve problems, right-click the scanner icon with the red X o ver it. The shortcut menu appears. 2. Choose Connect from the shortcut menu. The software finds the scanner and makes the connection.

A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 21 A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS The OneT ouch buttons ar e preconfigur ed to scan items at various settings, and then send the scanned image to a pr eselected software application—called the Destination A pplication.

A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 23 T o display the Configuration dialog bo x: 1. Right-click the scanner icon. The shortcut menu appears. 2. Choose Configur e on the shortcut menu.
24 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8100 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Select F ormat and P age(s) —a set of options for selecting a format for the scanned image and whether to scan a single page or multiple pages. The formats are bitmap and P aperP ort. Use P aperP or t for scanning any item.
A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 25 S ELECTING N EW O PTIONS FOR THE B UTTONS Y ou can select a new destination application, confi guration, and image format for a scanner button to optimiz e it for the type of scanning you want to do. Y ou use the Configuration dialog bo x to select new options.
26 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8100 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Click a selection in the S elect Configuration list to choose a new scan configuration for the selected scanner button. The configurations in the list are pr eset for the application you select in the application list.
A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 27 A DJUSTING S CAN S ETTINGS AND P AGE S ETTINGS When scanning using a configuration that y ou created y ourself , you can adjust that configuration ’ s scan settings and page settings. F or example, if the scanned image is too dark, y ou can adjust the brightness of the scan setting.
28 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8100 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. In the S elect Configuration list, click the configuration that y ou want to adjust. F or example, the following figure sho ws a configuration named Photograph for Editing (which y ou would have cr eated earlier).
A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 29 4. Adjust the scan settings that y ou want. M ode —Select B lack/White to scan in black and white. F or example, letters and memos are usually scanned in black and white. Select G rayscale to scan items such as documents containing drawings or black and white photographs.
30 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8100 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 5. Click the P age Settings tab to adjust the scan page settings. P age Size —Choose a page siz e from the dr op-down list. The outlines on the picture r epresent the various page sizes. Clicking one of those outlines also selects it as the page siz e for the scan.
A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 31 The scanning may slo w down a bit when this option is selected. Y ou don ’ t need to select this option when scanning photographs. The DeScreen setting does not apply to the B lack/White mode. Gamma —D rag the slider to impro ve how the colors in a scanned image look on your monitor .
32 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8100 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S ETTING P REFERENCES The prefer ences apply to each button and to the scanner . T o set pr efer ences: 1. On the Configuration dialog bo x, select the tab for a button to set its prefer ences.

B y selecting the Sho w All Destinations option as the pr eference for the email button, all the other types of applications ar e included in the list of email destination applications.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 35 S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE Instead of using a scanner button, y ou can scan directly from the P aperP ort software. This is particularly helpful when you ’ re using P aperP ort to file and save your scanned items.
36 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8100 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S CANNING AN I TEM WITH THE T WAIN B UTTON The following steps explain ho w to scan an item using the T wain button in the P aperP ort software. Y ou can scan many types of items, fr om small business cards to A4-siz ed pages.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 37 4. Select the options that y ou want for the scan. Scan P age F or —Select one of these preset options if y ou want to use it for scanning. These options are optimiz ed for the various uses of scanned images, such as scanning for editing text or scanning in color .
38 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8100 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE M ode —Choose a scan mode from the dr op-down menu to select the mode for scanning. The symbols next to the menu options indicate black and white, grayscale, or color . Res —This is the resolution setting for the scan in dots-per-inch (dpi).
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 39 8. When you ’ re satisfied with the image settings, click the Scan button. The scanner now r e-scans the item and displays the fi nal image as a thumbnail on the P aperP ort Desktop . The small icon in the low er left corner of the thumbnail indicates the sample photo was scanned as a bitmap image.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 41 A BOUT THE P REDEFINED S CAN S ETTINGS IN P APER P ORT Selecting the pr oper scan setting befor e final scanning pro vides the best results for a scanned item. The scan setting determines the sharpness of the item and the number of possible shades of gray or color .
