S TEP 1: I NSTALLING THE S CANNER S OFTWARE 5 S TEP 1: I NSTALLING THE S CANNER S OFTWARE T o install the scanner softwar e: 1. S tart Microsoft Windows and make sur e that no other applications are running. 2. Insert the CD into your computer ’ s CD-R OM drive.

During installation, a message instructs y ou to connect the scanner to the computer . 6. F ollow the steps in “S tep 2: Connecting the Scanner” to connect the scanner .
S TEP 2: C ONNECTING THE S CANNER 7 T o connect y our Visioneer OneT ouch 5820 scanner : 1. Check that the TP A cable is plugged into the TP A port on the back of the scanner .
8 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Plug the po wer supply cable into the jack on the TP A cable and then plug the pow er supply into a wall outlet. The status light comes on indicating that the scanner is r eceiving power .
S TEP 3: C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER 9 7. If you r emov ed the CD from the CD driv e and want to install other software, r einsert the CD into the drive. In addition to installing the other softwar e from the CD, you can also view and print the U ser Guides.
10 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. Choose About from the shortcut menu. A dialog box confirms that the scanner is pr operly connected. 3. Click OK to close the dialog box. That’ s it. Y our scanner is ready to scan. See “Three W ays to Scan ” on page 12.
S TEP 3: C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER 11 • Is the scanner ’ s power light on? T urn on the scanner ’ s power . If the light still doesn ’ t come on, plug the power adapter into another electrical outlet.

S CANNING 35 MM S LIDES AND F ILMSTRIPS 17 S CANNING 35 MM S LIDES AND F ILMSTRIPS Y ou can scan 35mm slides and film negatives using the r eversible mask that came with your 5820 O neT ouch scanner . Y ou can scan both positive film and negativ e images.
18 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. P osition the 35mm mask on the glass. The mask has one square corner . Align that corner with the arro w on the scanner body . Make sur e that the text on the 35mm mask faces up so slide fi ts properly in the mask.
S CANNING 35 MM S LIDES AND F ILMSTRIPS 19 4. T o scan a negative, first slide the filmstrip into the 35mm negativ e mask and center the frame you want to scan in the opening. Then position that mask on the glass and align its squar e corner with the arro w on the scanner body .

C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 21 C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER When you first connect your scanner to a computer , the scanner’ s software configur es each OneT ouch button with appr opriate settings. But, if y ou want to change the settings, you can r econfigure the buttons by selecting new options from the Configuration dialog bo x.
22 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o display the Configuration dialog bo x from the B utton P anel: 1. Right-click the button you want to confi gure. The Configuration dialog box appears. The tab for the scan button you clicked is selected for y ou.

C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 25 Select F ormat and P age(s) —a set of options for selecting a format for the scanned image and whether to scan a single page or multiple pages. The formats are bitmap and P aperP ort. U se P aperP ort for scanning any item.

Scroll the list of applications in the S elect Destination list and click the new application you want to use to view and wor k with the scanned image. 3. Click a selection in the S elect Configuration list to choose a new scan configuration for the selected scanner button.
C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 27 T o adjust the scan settings and page settings: 1. P ress and hold down a button on the scanner . The Configuration dialog box appears. The selected tab on the dialog box corr esponds to the button you pressed. Y ou can click the other tabs for the other buttons.
28 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Click the Edit button. The dialog box appears for adjusting the scanning settings of the selected configuration. 4. Adjust the scan settings that y ou want. M ode —Select B lack/White to scan in black and white.
C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 29 5. Click the P age Settings tab to adjust the scan page settings. P age Size —Choose a page siz e from the drop-down list. The outlines on the picture r epresent the various page sizes. Clicking one of those outlines also selects it as the page siz e for the scan.
30 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE The scanning may slo w down a bit when this option is selected. Y ou don ’ t need to select this option when scanning photographs. The DeScreen setting does not apply to the B lack/White mode.
C ONFIGURING THE S CANNER 31 S ETTING P REFERENCES The prefer ences apply to each button and to the scanner . T o set pr efer ences: 1. On the Configuration dialog bo x, select the tab for a button to set its prefer ences. 2. Click the P references tab on the Configuration dialog bo x.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 35 3. Choose the Scan Manager , and then click Select . Y our scanner is now set to scan. S CANNING AN I TEM U SING THE T WAIN B UTTON T o scan an item: 1. If the P aperP or t software isn ’ t currently running, double-click the P aperP ort icon on the Windo ws desktop to start it.
36 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 4. F rom the list of Scanner Settings labeled “Scan P age F or ,” select the most appropriate setting for the item y ou ’ re scanning. In the example abo ve, the selected setting is “Color D ocument-F aster .

I f you want to change the scanner setting for the item, click one of the options in the list to “Scan P age F or .” F or example, to scan a black and white image instead of a color photo, select Black & White Photo in the list.

40 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Selecting the pr oper scanner setting befor e scanning produces the best results for a scanned item. The scanner setting determines the resolution of the item and the number of possible shades of gray or color .
A DJUSTING S CANNER S ETTINGS 41 Size —The page size for the image. If y ou want to use one of the pr eset sizes, click the drop-do wn arrow and choose the size fr om the list. If y ou want to create a custom siz e, click on the pictur e window and drag the mouse.
42 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5820 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 4. Click the Save As button. The Sav e As dialog box appears. 5. T ype a name for the new scanner setting. 6. Click Save . The new setting is added to the list of “Scan P age F or ” options at the top of the dialog box.

H OW TO U NINSTALL YOUR S CANNER 45 H OW TO U NINSTALL YOUR S CANNER T o uninstall the V isioneer OneT ouch 5820 scanner , you remov e the OneT ouch V ersion 3.0 software first, and then remo ve the P aperP ort software, or other softwar e you installed for the scanner .

The V isioneer OneT ouch software is uninstalled from your computer . The status light on the scanner turns amber indicating that the scanner and computer ar e no longer communicating.
