The S trobe 500 scanner can be r emoved fr om the docking station and taken on the road for mobile scanning.

B EFORE Y OU B EGIN 5 Installation Installation is a quick, thr ee-step process: 1. U npack and Assemble the scanner 2. Install the software and Connect the scanner 3. Register the scanne r B EFORE Y OU B EGIN Please make sur e of the follo wing befor e you begin installation: ■ Do not plug in the USB cable unti l after y ou install the software.
6 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE ■ If your computer is running Windows version V ista or later , you may see the Windows U ser Account Control screen asking you to confirm system changes. Click the Continue button to allow the installation to proceed.
S TEP 1: U NPACK AND A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 7 5. Detach the scanner body from the docking station and remo ve the foam strip from the docking station. 1. P ress and hold the release button on the side of the docking station. 2. T ilt the scanner body towards the front and lift the scanner out of the Docking S tation.

No t e : If the disc does not automatically star t, check the following: ■ Make sure the disc drive ’ s door is completel y shut. ■ Make sure the disc was inserted in the drive in the proper direction (label side up).

S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE AND C ONNECT THE S CANNER 11 4. The next window lists the choices of the drivers that you can instal l for your scanner . 5. Select the option you want. Click Ne x t . ■ Full I nstall (TW AIN and Wi ndows D riv er) —This is the rec o m m e n d e d installation.
12 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 6. A window opens with image quality samples asking you to select an image for your Color S pace setting. Se lect the option that looks best to you and click Ne x t . This sets a default gamma value for scans and can be changed later on.

Plug the power cor d into the power supply and into a wall outlet. No t e : Only use the power supply included with your scanner (M od el: HEG42-240100-7L made by H iT ron).
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE AND C ONNECT THE S CANNER 15 T o Connect the Scanner P ower to the Computer: 1. Plug the round end of the USB power cord into the power jack on the scanner . 2. Plug the flat end of the USB power cord into an available USB port on the back of the computer .
16 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER The Visioneer Str obe 500 scanner connects to any av ailable USB port. Check your computer’ s manual for USB port locations. 1. Remove any protective tape from the USB cable.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE AND C ONNECT THE S CANNER 17 SPEED USB hub ”. Plug the USB cable into a USB 2.0 por t (if available) or just disr egard the message. I f you leave it plugged into the USB 1.1 port, your scanner may scan a bit slower .

When you ’ re certain that the software has completely loaded, return to the “Complete the installation by connecting your hardware ” window . 6. Click OK . Y ou can also click Mo re to see a quick overview about accessing and navigating the OneT ouch Button P anel.

After loading documents in the scanner , as described below , you can also scan using the OneT ouch Button P anel on screen, or using a scanning application.
D ETACH OR A TTACH THE S TROBE 500 27 D ETACH OR A TTACH THE S TROBE 500 The S trobe 500 scanner body can be remo ved from the Docking S tation to be used as a mobile scanner . T O D ETACH THE S CANNER B ODY FROM THE D OCKING S TATION : 1. P ress and hold the release button on the side of the Docking Station.

S CANNING I NTERFACES 35 Scanning from OneT ouch Based on the re commended full installation of the scanner driver and the Visioneer OneT ouch software, OneT ouch is your main scanning interface for using the scanner . The OneT ouch settings dial, on the scanner , shows which scan settings will be used for scanning.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 45 C REATING A N EW S CAN C ONFIGURATION The scan configurations are where y ou select the scanning resolution, brightness, mode (color , black&white, or grayscale), and a number of other settings. T o create a new configuration: 1.

48 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE F or single-sided scans, the scan area is the size of the image. F or double- sided scans, the scan area is the size of the larger of the two ar eas on the front and back of the page.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 49 ■ Color Fi lter —Color filter is the ability of your scanner to automatically remove a color fr om a scanned item. Color filter applies to Black&White or G rayScale M ode. Click on OK , if you are done making changes to the configuration, to save and close the configuration window .

Drag the sliders to the left and right to change the color settings. As you do, the image changes to show the effects of the new settings.

Y ou can then use the interface to change the color mode, reso lution, page size, and other settings.

The following windo w will open asking if you want to cancel the entire job. ■ Ye s —Scanning stops and all pages scanned in this batch, up to this point, will be deleted.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 57 S ELECTING P AGE F ORMAT O PTIONS The P age Format options that y ou select determines the file format of the scanned document. Appropriate page format options and file types ar e available for the type of Destination Application selected for the button.
58 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE I MAGE F ORMATS Select an image file format for phot os, artwork or other documents that you want to save as images. BMP and TIFF a re standar d image file formats generally used if you want to do additional image processing.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 59 T EXT F ORMATS Selecting the text format option al so selects OCR processing as an automatic step for scanning. Therefor e, when you scan a document with the text format s elected, the text portions of the document are automatically converted to editable text .

P aperP or t Properties These properties apply to designat ing the P aperP ort folder to receive your scanned items.

When you select the application using the B rowse button, steps 1 and 2 on the dialog box are automatically filled in, and the application icon appears in step 3.

If Create S ingle Image F iles is not selected, image transfer occurs after all pages have been scanned.
S CANNING WITH O PTICAL C HARACTER R ECOGNITION (OCR) 71 S CANNING WITH O PTICAL C HARACTER R ECOGNITION (OCR) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts text and numbers on a scanned page into editable text and numbers. Y ou can then work with the text and numbers to edit, spellcheck, change font or type size, sort, calculate, and so forth.
72 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o scan with OCR: 1. Open the One T ouch Prope rties window . 2. Select a text editing program in the Select Destination list, then select a text file format in the Select F ormat panel.
S CAN AND B URN TO A CD 73 S CAN AND B URN TO A CD If you hav e a CD burner attached to your computer , you can scan directly from your scanner onto a CD. This featur e is available only on computers running Windows version XP or later . 1. Open the O neT ouch P roperties window .
74 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING WITH E VENT F OR WARDING If you want to specify an application to use for scanning at the start of the process, you can use event forwarding. 1. Open the O neT ouch P roperties window . 2.
S CAN AS AN HTML P AGE 75 S CAN AS AN HTML P AGE Y ou can conv ert scanned pages to HTML format for posting directly to your web site. Those pages are then view able by visitors to your web site without the need for any internet plug-ins or other special processing.
76 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T RANSFERRING S CANNED D OCUMENTS TO S TORAGE With the T ransfer to Storage scanni ng process, you can scan documents and save them in a folder in one step . The process is ideal for archiving documents without having to manually save or process them in any other way .
T RANSFERRING S CANNED D OCUMENTS TO S TORAGE 77 S CANNING TO M ULTIPLE F OLDERS When archiving documents with the T ransfer to S torage option, you can scan them to multiple folders.
78 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 7. Click the Storag e Options tab . 8. Click the Browse button. 9. Select the folder you cr eated for storing the scanned documents. If you haven ’ t created the folder yet, you can click the Mak e New Fo l d e r butt on and type the name for the new folder .
T RANSFERRING S CANNED D OCUMENTS TO S TORAGE 79 10. Click OK . The selected folder will now be set as the S t orage Location, such as “Business Receipts.” 11. Click OK . The new configuration is now listed as a T ransfer to S torage configuration.
80 V ISIONEER S TROBE 500 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Scan to multiple storage folders: 1. Load the first set of documents you want to scan. 2. Select the function on the scanner that you set to scan to the storage location. F or example, button 5 to scan using the “Business Receipts ” configuration.

Y ou can also click the Hardwar e icon at the top of the OneT ouch Button P anel, or right-click on the Strobe 500 icon when the OneT ouch button panel is in the H ardwar e View .

The scanner self-calibrates when you click the Calibrate button. The calibration window on-screen will close automatically when calibration is finished.
C HANGING THE H ARDWARE S ETTINGS 83 Scanning from TW AIN Y ou can scan fr om any TW AIN scanning application instead of scanning from the One T ouch buttons on your scanner or the One T ouch button panel.
