If you are n ew to scannin g, be sure to read “Understandin g Scanning” on Page 15 for a quick background on the technology . The first thing you’ll need to do is inst all batteries in the scanner .
15 Understanding Scanning Underst anding Scanning This section provides you with background on how scanning works. Y ou don’t really need to know all o f this to use your scanner , but some background knowledge will help you get the most from your UBC3500XL T .
16 This is dif ferent from scanning because you are searching for frequencies th at have not been programmed into the scann er . When you select frequency bands to search, the scanner searches fo r any active frequency within the lower and upp er limits you specify .
17 Understanding Scanning with each other to the point where it is impossible to clearly receive any of the st ations. A scanner equipped with CTCSS a nd DCS (like your scanner) can code each received fr equency with a specific CTCSS or DCS frequency .
18 Conventional Scanning Conventional scanning is a relatively simple concept. Each group of users in a conventional system is assigned a single frequency (for simplex systems) or two frequencies (for repeater syste ms) . An y t ime one of them transmits, their transmission always goe s out on the same frequency .
19 Understanding Scanning Repeater Operation Repeater systems use two frequencies: on e transmits from the radio to a central repeater; the other tr ansmits from the repe ater to other rad ios in the system.

21 Setting Up Your Scanner These guidelines will help yo u install and set up your new scanner: • If your sc anner receive s interference or electrical noise, move the scanner or it s antenna away from the source. • T o improve the scanner ’s reception, use an optional external antenna design ed for multi-band coverage.
22 2. Install 3 AA batteries, matching the po larity symbols (+ -). W ARNING! Set ALKALINE/Ni-MH to Ni-MH for use only w ith rechargeable b atteries. Never attempt to recharge non-rechargeable ba tteries. Non-rechargeable batteries can get hot and can even burst if you try to recharge them.
23 Setting Up Your Scanner If an AC adapter is connected to the scanne r , the scanner checks the condition of the inst alled batteries. If the scanner is turned of f and the batteries require a full charge, Normal Charging appear s as the batteries are rech arged.
24 Connecting the Antenna T o attach the supplied flexible antenn a to the connector o n the top of your scann er , sim ply screw it onto the scanner's SMA connecto r .
25 Setting Up Your Scanner W ARNIN G! Never connect any part of the head phone jack to the antenna jack or connect the radio to an installatio n where the antenna and audio connection are gr ounded. This might damage the scanner . Att aching the Belt Clip T o make your scanner easier to carry when you are o n the go, use the supplied belt clip.
26 If your scanner's keys seem confusing at first, the following information should h elp you understand each key's function. Key Name Description Hold/ Hold – Holds the scan or the frequency search when pressed. Resumes the scan or the frequency sear ch when pressed again.
27 Setting Up Your Scanner // – T urns the display backlight on or off. Press and hold for more than 2 seconds to turn the scanner on or off. + – Locks and unlocks the keyp ad. 0 - 90 - 9 – Enters a freque ncy , enters quick key numbers, and selects a custom search range in Custom Search mode .
28 A Look At The Display The display has indicators that show the scanner's current operating st atus. The display inform ation helps you underst and how your scanner o perates. Sn: - appears with a number to show the currently- selected System Quick Key number .
29 Setting Up Your Scanner - appears when you lock the keyp ad (see “Locking/Unlocking the Ke ypad and Scroll” on Page 38). - alerts you when th e battery po wer gets low . GRP - shows the curren tly activated group or selected group Quick Key number , appears with numbers ( 0 - 9 ).
30 Using Menu Press on the le ft side of the scanner to enter the menu. See “Using the Menu ” on Page 36 for more information about the scann er ’s menu options. Using Func T o select the function labeled below a key on the front of the scanner , hold down on the left sid e of the scanner , then press that ke y .
31 Basic Operation Basic Operation T urning On the Scanner and Setting the Squelch Note: Make sure the scanner's antenn a is connected before you turn it on. 1. Press and hold for about 2 secon ds to turn on the scanne r . 2. Briefly press the scroll cont rol once.
32 Scanning Systems T o begin scanning programmed systems, press Scan . The UBC3500XL T scans all unlocked systems in all activated quick- key groups and any searches unlocked for sea rch and scan. Notes: • If no systems are programmed, or all systems are locked out, an er ror message appears.
33 Basic Operation quick key’s 2-digit nu mber . T o stop scanning the system(s), press (if the quick key is a 2-digit quick key) then t he number b utton or butt ons again. The Sx: (system) indicators on the display show the systems that are currently selected.
34 Locking/Unlocking Channels Follow thes e steps to lock out a channel so t hat it does not scan even if its system and chan nel group are selected. 1. While holding down , rotate the scroll control to select the system wher e th e channel is stored .
35 Basic Operation called Qck Save Cnv Sys . These are created if they do not exist. Then , the scanner prompt s you to save other channel settings. If you pressed No in S tep 3, the scanner prompts you to select the system where you want to store th e frequency .
36 Using the Menu The scanner’s menu let s you select options that le t you set up and use the scanner . T o use the menu, press on the left side of the scanner . T o select a menu item, rotate the scr oll control clockwise or counte rclockwise. The currently- selected menu ite m is highlighted with a bar on the display .

39 Settings T urning Power Save On or Off Settings Set Battery Save • On The scanner goes into low-power mode when you monitor a conventional channel that has no activity .
40 Pressing any key while the backlight is on exte nds the backlight period. Pressing while the backlight is on turns off the b acklight. Setting the Audio AGC Settings Set Audio AGC This setting helps balance th e audio level you hear as you listen to differ ent radio sources so you can hear them at a similar volume.
41 Settings which data is tr ansferred between the scanner a nd the computer , in bits per second (bp s). Important! Before y ou start transferring dat a between your scanner and your co mputer , make sure the batteries are fresh or fully charged.
42 Wire d C lo nin g Wired Clone • Master Sets the scanner to be the source scanner . • Slave Sets the scanner to b e the recipient scanner .
43 Programming Radio Systems Programming Radio Systems T o get the most enjoyment from your scanner , you must customize the program ming for your area. Use the menu to navigate to the system se tting you want to customize. Prog ramming radio sy stems is completed in two major steps.

46 Programming/Editing Optional Set- tings This section details the inst ructions for each of the optional pr ogramming steps referred to in “Programming Radio System s” on Page 43. Use the instructions in th e appropriate se ction to enter or edit a setting.
47 Programming/Editing Optional Settings Hints: • Access single-digit system Quick Key s by pressing the single digit on the ke ypad during scanning. Access two-digit system Q uick Keys by pressing then both digits. • Y ou can assign as many systems to the same quick key as you want.
48 Notes: • If you select 0, the scanner stays on the system for a minimal time (only long enough to check current system activit y). • The default setting is 2 seconds for each system. • For conventional systems, all unlocke d channels will be scanned at least on ce regardless of this setting.
49 Programming/Editing Optional Settings On - The scanner ignores the Dat a Signal and resumes searching in a few seconds. Off - The scanner treat s all signals as normal transmission. Deleting Systems Program System Select the system Delete System The scanner prompt s you to confirm deletion.

53 Programming/Editing Optional Settings Input the frequency , then press the scroll control. T o change the frequency you entered, turn the scroll control to select Edit Frequency , then press the scroll control.
54 Alert 1 - 9 - the scanner sounds an alert beep to notify you of the emergency transmission. Y ou can choose any of 9 differe nt beep types. Set Level Auto - the scanner automatically set s the emergency alert beep to the master volume leve l. Level 1 - 15 - the scanner adjusts the volume you hear to the leve l you select.
55 Programming/Editing Optional Settings Notes: • The default setting is Off . • See “What is CTCSS/DCS?” on P age 16 for a complete list of CTCSS and DCS tones.

59 Searching and Storing Sear ching and S toring Service Search Service Search lets you qui ckly selec t and search the scanner ’s pr eprogrammed search ran ge. During service search , the scanner se arches starting with t he lowest frequency in the sear ch range you select to the highest freque ncy in the range.
60 Qck Search Hold appears if you press Hold . Press E to start quick search or no to go to the sear ch menu. Custom Search Custom Search lets you prog ram and search 10 custom search ranges. Y ou can search any of these ranges simult aneously and select each custom search range you set.
61 Searching and Storing Editing a Custom Search Range Y ou can edit up to 1 0 custom s earch ranges . The names of the custom search ranges ap pear on the display . The default cust om search range names appear as Custom 1 , Custom 2 , and so on. Search for .
62 custom search range to lock or unlock by rot ating the scroll control with pressing . Set Hold Time - lets you set the amount of time to hold the custom search range during scann ing. Y ou can set Hold time from 0 to 255 seconds. Notes: • If you select 0, the scanner then searches the entire range one time.
63 Searching and Storing Off The attenuator is of f. On Reception is attenuated by about 25 dB. Notes: • Tu rn on this setting if you are near other strong signal sources. Attenuation sometimes helps to redu ce interference and desensitization that strong signals create.

65 Using the Close Call Feature Using the Close Call Featur e Y our scanner's Close Call TM feature lets you set t he scanner so it detect s, displays the frequency of, and lets you hear a nea rby strong radio transmission.
66 • The Close Call feature cannot detect satellite dishes or any transmitter with a frequency above or below the frequency ranges listed und er the Set CC Bands : option on Page 68. • The Close Call fe ature works better with some types of transmissions than ot hers.
67 Using the Close Call Feature CC DND (Do Not Disturb) - The scanner checks for a Close Call hit every 2 seconds only if the scanner is not currently stopped on a transm is- sion. If the scanner is on a transmission the scanner wait s until the signal ends to perform a Close Call chec k.
68 • Beep+Light (the scanner beeps and the ba ck li gh t turns on when it re ceives a Close Call signal) • None (the scanner does not alert) Select Beep • Off (the scanner does not bee p) • Alert 1-9 - (the scanner sounds an alert beep to notify you of a Close Call hit.
69 Using the Close Call Feature Call operation. (The Close Call feature w orks for all frequencies listed above.) Close Call Hit s When the scann er detects a Close Call hit, it a lerts you according to the Override and Alert settings in the pre viou s section.

71 Search and Close Call Options Rvw Search L/O The scanner displays the first locked-out frequency and prompt s you to unlock the frequency . Press the scroll control to unlock th e frequency . Or , rotate the scroll control or press to select a diff erent frequency .

74 Off - the scanner remains on the channel until th e transmission stops. Notes: • If you are trying to test the Close Call feature with a nearby transmitter and you do not talk into the transmitter , the scanner will detect this as data and will skip the fr equency when Data Skip is on.
75 Search and Close Call Options 5.0 kHz , 6.25 kHz , 7.5 kHz , 8.33 kHz , 10.0 kHz , 12.5 kHz , 15.0 kHz , 20.0 kHz , 25.0 kHz , 50.0 kHz , 100.0 kHz The scanner uses the selected step.
76 Using T one-Out Fire T o ne-Out Introduction Y our scanner can be set to respond to fire tone-outs that use standa rd two-tone sequential paging, sho rt one-tone p aging, and long group ton e paging.
77 Using Tone-Out • Edit Name - Set s the name for the selected tone - out setting. • Set Frequency — Sets the tone-out s RF frequency p arameters. Edit Frequency — Enter the de sired fre- quency tha t the scanner should mon itor for the tone-out.
78 • Set Delay Time — Sets the time the sca nner remains in monito r mode after the sca nner receives a p age and the carrier drop s. • 1-5 seconds: the sc anner resumes standby mode after the carrier dro ps and the selected time expires. • Infinite: you must press HOLD after a p age to resume sta ndby mode.
79 Care and Maintenance Care and Mainte- nance General Use • T urn the scanner o ff before disconnecting the power . • If memory is lost, simp ly reprogram each channe l. • Always press each button firmly until you hear the entry tone for that key entry .
80 Birdies All radios can receive “birdies” (undesire d signals). If your scanner stops dur ing Scan mode and no sound is heard, it might be receiving a birdie. Birdies are internally generated signals inherent in the electronics of the scanner . Press L/O to lock out the channel.
81 Troubleshooting T roubleshooting If your UBC3500XL T is not performing properly , try these steps. Problem Possible Cause Suggestion The scanner doesn’t work. The scanner might not be receiving any power . Make sure the AC adapter i s c o n n e c t e d t o an AC outlet and the scanner .
82 Scan won’t star t. Y ou must pre ss Scan to scan. Press Scan . The squelch might need to be adjuste d. Adjust the squelch threshold.
