http://www.tyan.com 24 2.5 - Heat sink Installation After installing the processor, you should proceed to install the h eat sink. The CPU heat sink will ensure th at the pr ocess or do not overheat and c ontinue to operate at maximum performance for as lo ng as you o wn them.
http://www.tyan.com 25 2.6 - Thermal Interface Material There are two t ypes of thermal interface materials designed for use with the processors. The most common material comes as a small pad attached to the heat sink at the time of purchase. There should be a protective cover over the material.
http://www.tyan.com 26 2.7 - Finishing Installing the Heat sink After you have finished installing the heat sink onto the processor and socket, attach the end wire of the fan (which should already be attached to the heat sink) to the motherboard. T he following diagram illustrates ho w to connect fans onto the motherboard.
http://www.tyan.com 27 2.8 - Tips on Installing Motherboard in Chassis Before installing your motherbo ard, make sure your chassis has the necessary motherboard support studs insta lled. These studs are usuall y metal and are gold in color. Usually, the chassis m anufacturer will pre- install the support studs.
http://www.tyan.com 28 Some chassis’ include plastic studs in stead of metal. Alt hough the plastic studs are usable, TYAN ® recommends using metal studs with screws that will fasten the motherboard more securely in place. Below is a chart detailing what the most common motherboard studs look l ike and how they should be install ed.
http://www.tyan.com 29 2.9 - Installing the Memory Before installing memory, ensure that t he memor y you have is compatible with the motherboard and process or. Check the TYAN ® web site at: www. tya n.c om for details of the type of memory recommended for your motherboard.

http://www.tyan.com 78 Glossary ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Pow er Interface): a power management specification that allo ws the operating system to c ontrol the amount o f power distributed to the computer’s devices. Devi ces not in use can be turned off, reducing unnecessary po wer expenditure.
http://www.tyan.com 79 losing your data shoul d the system crash. Information in a buffer is temporaril y stored, not permanently saved. Bus: a data pathway. The term is use d especially to refer to the con nection between the processor and s ystem memory, and between the processor and PCI or ISA local buses.
http://www.tyan.com 80 DRAM (Dynamic RAM): widely available, very affordable form of RAM which looses data if it is not recharged regularl y (every few milliseconds). This refresh requirement makes DRAM three to ten times slower than non-rec harged RAM such as SRAM.
http://www.tyan.com 81 IRQ (Interrupt Request): an electronic request that runs from a hardware device to the CPU. The interrupt controller a ssigns priorities to incoming reque sts and delivers them to the CPU. It is important that there is only one devic e hooked up to each IRQ line; doubling up devices on IRQ lines can lock up your system.
http://www.tyan.com 82 designed to define a standard set of preboot pr otocol services within a client with the goal of allowing networked-based b ooting to boot using industr y standard protocols. RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks): a way for the same data to be stored in different places on many har d dr ives.
http://www.tyan.com 83 features hardware and software innovations within NVIDIA GPU s (graphics processing units) and NVIDIA MCPs (media and commu nications processors). Depending on the ap plication , NVIDIA SLI can deliver as much as two times the performance of a single GPU configuratio n.
http://www.tyan.com 84 Technical Support If a problem arises with your system, you sh ould first turn to your dealer for direct support. Your system has most likely been configured or designed b y them and they should have the best i dea of what hardware and soft ware your system contains.
http://www.tyan.com 85 Note: A receipt or copy of your invoice marked with the date of purchase is requ ired before any warrant y service can be rendered. You may obtain ser vice by calling the manufacturer for a Return Merchandis e Authorization (RMA) number.
