1 I NTRODUCTION The 3Com E therLink III P arallel T asking adapters described in this guide are members of a family of third-generation Ethernet adapters . This family includes the 32-bit bus master Extended Industr y Standar d Architecture (EISA)10 Mbps Ethernet network adapters .

2 I NSTALLING THE EISA A DAPTER This chapter describes how t o install the 3C592 EISA adapter in your computer . An over view of these pr ocedures is shown in F igure 2-1. T o avoid damaging any static-sensitive c omponents after removal from the container , be sure to reduce any static electricity on your person.
Inserting the Adapter 2-3 3 Select an appropriate expansion slot and remov e its expansion cov er plate. 4 Insert the adapter in the EISA slot and secure the screw . If you have a c omputer with slots other than EISA slots, be sure to insert the 3C592 EISA adapter only in an EISA slot.
2-4 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE EISA A DAPTER C onfirming Adapter Installation If you are installing the 3C592 EISA adapter in a computer running Windows 95, you can confirm the adapter’ s installation by follo wing these steps: 1 After starting Windows 95, double-click the My Computer icon.
Connecting to the Network 2-5 C onnecting to the Network Y ou must connect the adapter to the network before installing the drivers . This section describes how to connect different types of network cables to the 3C592 EISA adapters . T able 2-1 lists the types of network cable connectors that are found on 3C592 EISA adapters.

Connecting to the Network 2-7 The next step is to load the drivers , as explained in Chapter 3. If you are running Windows 95, you can confirm the network connection by double-clicking the Network Neighborhood icon. The presence of the Entire Network icon in the display box confirms the network connection.

3 C ONFIGURING THE A DAPTER This chapter explains how to configur e the 3C592 EISA adapter using the EISA configuration diskette that came with your computer and the EtherDisk diskette supplied with the adapter . The configuration process is shown in F igure 3-1.

Configuring the Adapter 3-3 4 F ollow the on-line prompts and the instructions that accompanied your EISA c omputer and then run the EISA configuration utility . The sequence of configur ation steps required for some EISA computers may vary from the steps explained here.

Loading NetWare ODI Drivers 4-7 If you experience problems that occur only when using the AutoLink program, display or print the AUT OLINK.L OG file. The A UTOLINK.L OG file contains a log of all the events that occurred during the AutoLink installation and configuration process.

Y ou must use the adapter ’ s port address when installing one or more adapters in a server .

Follow these st eps: 1 After inserting the 3C592 EISA adapter , connecting it to the network, and running the configuration utility program, reboot your c omputer .

Desktop Management Interface 4-17 Desktop Management In ter face 3Com ’ s suppor t of the D esktop Management Inter face (DMI) makes the management of PCs and 3C592 EISA adapters easier . Suppor t of DMI allows any DMI-compatible management application to access 3Com adapt er information.
5 P ERFORMING T ROUBLESHOOTING AND D IAGNOSTIC T ESTS This chapter explains how to isolat e and solve 3C592 EISA adapter problems. Figure 5-1 illustrates how the pr ocedures in this chapter might be used. Make sure that the adapter is c orrectly installed.
5-2 C HAPTER 5: P ERFORMING T ROUBLESHOOTING AND D IAGNOSTIC T ESTS T roubleshooting with the Diagnostic T ests The diagnostic tests on the 3C59X EtherDisk diskette check the adapter ’ s operation and permit the isolation of faults. Y ou can run the diagnostic tests after installing one or more 3C592 EISA adapters, or when a fault is suspec t ed.
Starting the Diagnostic Program 5-3 If the adapter passes all tests successfully , hardware failur e is ruled out. If a problem still remains, look at cabling, software, and other issues that affect functionalit y on the network. After running the diagnostic tests, you should reboot your computer to communicate on the netw ork.

Starting the Diagnostic Program 5-5 Running the Group 2 T est The Group 2 test is called the Netw ork Loopback T est. I t tests the 3C592-C OMBO adapter ’ s abilit y to transmit and r eceive data via the internal transceiver . T his test requires installation of a loopback plug at the adapter ’ s BNC transceiver connection.

Getting Help If a Test Fails 5-9 3 Make sure that y ou booted your computer under DOS version 3.1 or lat er , and that no device drivers or memory managers are loaded .

The AUT OLINK.L OG file contains a log of all the events that occurred during the A utoLink installation and configuration pr ocess.
