INITIAL SETTINGS 2-2 About the Liquid Crystal Display The unit is equipped with a two-line liquid crystal display (LCD) on the operation panel for displa ying various messages and settings dur ing operation. This LCD can display up to 20 char acters on each line.

INITIAL SETTINGS 2-8 The unit can be set to adjust to time changes during the year , so that its inter nal clock and all subsequent notations of time (fax headers , programmed times , etc.
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-9 Y our unit has three modes f or receiving incoming calls and f axes: • A UT O mode: Select this mode when you only w ant to receive f ax es on your telephone line. The unit will automatically answ er all calls and receive incoming f axes.

INITIAL SETTINGS 2-11 F ax Setup On the control panel, you can select the paper siz e that you want receiv ed f ax es to be printed on (A UT O , A4, Letter , Legal). If you select the A UT O setting the unit automatically prints the fax out on the most appropriate size paper .
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-12 Setting the T ra y P aper Size Y ou must program the siz e of paper you ha ve loaded in the unit so that Receiv e Reduce functions can properly adjust the size of documents printed out. F ollow the steps below . Note: If you are using A4 siz e paper , y ou do not need to mak e any changes , as this is the factory setting.

INITIAL SETTINGS 2-14 F ax Setup Setting the Recall Interval The recall inter val, the time the unit waits in between attempts to re-send a f ax to a busy number , can be set from 1 to 15 minutes . INITIAL SETTINGS 2-15 F ax Setup Y ou can print an index mark along the edge of the pages in each job . This makes it easy to separate diff erent jobs on the output tra y .
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-16 Setting Fine Resolution Priority The unit is set to automatically begin reception if y ou pick up from an e xtension telephone and the unit detects a fax tone .
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-17 The unit ’ s Remote Reception f eature is designed to allow you to activ ate fax reception from an extension telephone . The Remote Reception function operates e v en when the F AX Signal Receive function is turned off. When y ou hear the f ax tone, simply press the one-digit F ax Remote Number (Factory setting: 5) and .

INITIAL SETTINGS 2-19 A utomatic Dialing is a quick and con venient w a y to dial by using only a Rapid k ey (Rapid K e y Dialing), or pressing the SPEED/SEARCH k ey and select the SPEED and entering a two digit n umber (Speed Dialing). T o use Automatic Dialing, you m ust first store the full number .
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-20 10 Press “ 1 ” if you want to specify the number as a Chain Dialing number (see “ Chain Dialing for Long Numbers ” in this section). Otherwise , press “ 2 ” . 11 Return to Step 4 to store another number , or press the ST OP ke y a number of times until you e xit.
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-21 Chain Dialing for Long Number s The maximum number of digits which ma y be entered when storing a fax n umber is 20. If you need to store a number which is longer than 20 digits, use Chain Dialing.
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-22 Storing Numbers Under Group Keys Group ke ys allo w you to dial a group of f ax numbers by simply pressing the appropriate Group ke y once . They are con v enient f or the Broadcasting function, which is used to transmit a document to a group of f ax machines.
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-23 6 Enter the name of the group (maximum of 20 digits including pauses) by pressing n umber k eys as described in “ How to Enter Characters ” in this chapter . If you do not w ant to enter a name, skip this step . (e xample) . .
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-24 Quiet Detect Time is the function that enab les the unit to be used along with an answ ering machine for both phone messages and f ax es. After the answ ering machine has answered, an y duration of silence longer than a cer tain threshold time will prompt the unit to take ov er the line and prepare to receiv e a f ax.
INITIAL SETTINGS 2-25 If Quiet Detect Time is not working pr operl y ... With some ans wering machines, there is simply no Quiet Detect Time that will allow both reception of f ax es and uninterrupted voice messages. Even in this case, ho we v er , you can set up the unit to receiv e both phone and f ax messages from callers on touch-tone lines.

CHOOSING SUIT ABLE MEDIA 3-1 Originals Suitable for Faxing Size and W eight The size and weight of documents that you can load i n the ADF (Auto Document) depend on whether you load one sheet at a time or several sheets at once.

If these are not removed, they may damage the unit. • Ink, glue, and correction fluid on originals must be completely dry before using the documents with the unit.

HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-13 Y our unit has a memor y area that can be used to store both incoming and outgoing documents. • Appro ximately 120 pages of av erage content can be held in memor y for tr ansmission. Less can be held if any of the pages were scanned using fine or superfine resolution.
HOW T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-14 If there is a problem with the unit, y ou can use the Data T ransf er function to ha ve received f ax es read into memory and then sent to a different f ax machine f or printing. This function is used when you cannot print receiv ed fax es, for e xample when the unit runs out of toner , a misf eed occurs.
HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-15 T ransmission Reser vation When your f ax is busy receiving a document or transmitting a document from memory , y ou can “ reser ve ” a transmission b y setting the document on the original table, reading it into memor y , and enter ing the fax n umber.
HOW T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-16 Special functions When using the original table : 1 Confirm that there are no documents in the ADF and that copying is not in pr ogres, then gently c lose the original cover . 2 Place the document face down on the original table.
HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-17 This function allows you to send the same document to as man y as 50 diff erent locations with just one operation. Once the document is loaded, it is scanned and stored in memory . The fax n umbers you hav e entered are then automatically dialed in succession, and the document is transmitted to each location.
HOW T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-18 4 Press the F AX ST ART ke y . T ransmission will begin. Broadcasting using a Gr oup key If the f ax machines to which you w ant to broadcast hav e all been progr ammed into one Group k ey , you can perf orm the broadcasting operation using the follo wing simplified procedure.
HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-19 P olling allo ws you to request another f ax machine to send a document to y our fax machine. In other words, the receiving f ax machine, not the transmitting f ax machine, activates the tr ansmission. Y ou can use your f ax to both poll and be polled b y others.
HOW T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-20 Being P olled (Memory P olling) T o allow multiple f ax machines to poll your f ax, or in cases where y ou want to free up the Document T ra y for other operations , use Memor y P olling instead of P olling Standby .
HO W T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-21 Adding to Documents If you ha v e a document stored in memor y for polling, and y ou want to add pages to it, use the follo wing procedure . If you allo w polling only once, the document will be automatically cleared from memor y after polling.
HOW T O USE THE F AX FUNCTION 4-22 The timer function allows y ou to set a transmission or polling operation to be perf or med automatically at a time you specify . Up to three transmission oper ations or polling operations can be set at an y one time, and the times they will be perf ormed can be specified up to a week in adv ance.

TROUBLESHOO TING 5-1 Pr oblem Check and Remed y Dialing cannot be done. M a ke sure that the telephone line is properly connected to both the unit and the w all jack. No transmission takes place. Make sure that the receiving machine has not run out of printing paper.
