8 Chapter 1: Introduction Overview Thank you for choosing the Thecus N5200P RO IP Storage Server. The Thecus N5200 is an easy-to-use storage server that al lows a dedicated approach to storing and distributing data on a n etwork.
9 Multiple RAID N5200PRO supports multiple RAID volumes on one system. So, you can create RAID 0 for your non-critical data, and create RAID 5 for mission-critical data. Create the RAID levels depen ding on your needs. To configure RAID modes on the N5200, refer to Chapter 4: System Managem ent > Storag e Manag ement > RAID List .

13 Chapter 2: Hardware Inst allation Overview Your N5200PRO is designed for easy inst allation. To help you get started, the following chapter will help you quickly ge t your N5200PRO up and running. Please read it carefully to prevent damaging yo ur unit during installation.
14 Cable Connections To connect the N5200PRO to yo ur network, follow the s teps below: 1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your network to the WAN po rt on the back panel of the N5200PRO. 2. Connect the provided p ower cord into the universal power socket on the back panel.
15 Checking System Status After making connections on the N5200PRO and powering up , check whether the system status is normal or has tro uble by observing indicators on the front panel and hard disk trays. System Status Normal The system status is normal if: 1.
16 Chapter 3: First T ime Setup Overview Once the hardware is installed, ph ysically connected to your network , and powered on, you can configure the N5200PRO so tha t it is accessible to your network users. There are two ways to set up your N5200PRO: using the Th ecus Setup Wizard or the LCD display .
17 6. Name your N5200PRO and configure th e network IP address. If your switch or router is conf igured as a DHCP Server, configu ring the N5200PRO to automatically obtain an IP address is recommended. You may also use a static IP address and enter the DNS Server address manually.
18 LCD Operation The N5200PRO is equipped with an LCD on the front for easy status display and setup. There are four buttons o n the front panel to contr ol the LCD func tions. LCD Controls Use the Up ( ▲ ), Down ( ▼ ), Enter ( ↵ ) and Escape ( ESC ) keys to select various configuration settings and menu opti ons for N5200PRO configuration.
19 The N5200PRO will rotate these message s every one-two seconds on the LCD display. USB Copy The USB Copy function enables you to copy files stored on USB devices such as USB disks and digital cameras to the N5200 PRO with a p ress of a button. To use USB copy, follow the steps below: 1.
20 Step 1: Network Setup From the Web Administration Interf ace, you can configure the network settings of the N5200PRO for your network. You can access the Network menu from t he menu bar. For details on how to c onfigure yo ur network settings, refer to Chapter 4: System Management > Network Management .

22 Chapter 4: System Management Overview The N5200PRO provides an easily accessible Web Administrati on Interface . With it, you can configure and monitor the N52 00PRO anywhere on the network . Web Administration Interface Make sure your network is connected to the Internet.

24 Status Menu The Status Menu o n the menu bar all ows yo u to see various aspects of the N5200PRO. From here, you can discover the status of the N5200PRO, and even find out other detai ls like firmware versio n and up time.
25 AFP Status The status of the Apple Filing Protocol server. NFS Status The status of the Network File Service Server. SMB/CIFS Status The status of the SMB/CIFS server. 26 Remove document from Queue Click to remove all documents from printer queue Restart Printer service Click to restart printer service If a corrupt print job is sent to a printer, printing may sudden ly fail. If your prin t jobs seem to be locked up, pressing the Remove All Documents b utton to clear the print queue may resolve the issue.
27 Wake-Up On Lan (WOL) The N5200PRO has the ability to be awoken from sleep mode via WAN port. From the Status menu, choose the WOL item, and the Wake-up On Lan Configuration screen appears.
28 Power Management Using the N5200PRO’s Power Management, you can sa ve energy and money by scheduling the N5200PRO to turn itself on and off during certain times of the day. From the Status menu, choose the Power Mgmt item and the Schedule Power On/Off screen appears.
29 Storage Management The Storage Menu displays the status of storage dev ices installed in th e N5200PRO, and includes storage configurat ion options such as RAID and disk settings, folder configuration, and Nsync settings. Disks Information From the Storage menu, choose the Disks item and the Disks Information screen appears.
30 S.M.A.R.T. Information Item Description Tray Numb er Tra y the hard disk is in stalle d in. Model Model name of the installed hard di sk. Power ON Hours Count of hours in power-on state. The raw value of this attribute shows total count of hours (or minutes, or seconds, depending on manufacturer) in power-on state.
31 To configure your RAID settings, press the RA ID Config button to go to the RAID Configuration screen. RAID Information Item Description Select Used to select the current RAID volume. Master RAID The RAID volume currently designated as the Master RAID volume.
32 RAID 6 Two independent parity computations must be used in order to provide protection against double disk fail ure. Two different algorithms are employed to achieve this purpose. RAID 6 requires a minimum of 4 disks. RAID 6 can sustain two failed disks.
33 4. If this RAID volume is meant to be the Master RAID volume, tick th e Master RAID check box. 5. Tick the checkboxes under the “member” heading of the hard disks you wish to use to create a RAID. 6. Specify a stripe size — 64K is the de fault setting.
34 Migrating a RAID Once a RAID volume has been created, yo u may want to move i t to other physical drives or change the RAID array all together. To migrate a RAID 0, RAID 1, or RAID 5 volume, follow the steps below: 1. From the RAID Configuration screen, click Migrate RAID.
35 Space Allocation You may specify the space allocated for both Target USB and iSCSI vo lumes. To do this, under the Storage menu, cli ck RAID and the RAID List window appears. Select the RAID volu me you wish to reallocate by clickin g on its radio button, and cl ick Space Allocat ion .
36 3. Click OK to create the Target USB volume. Allocating Space for iSCSI Volume To allocate space for an iSC SI volume on the current RAID volume, follow the steps below: 1. Under the Volume Allocation List , click iSCSI Target . The Create iSCSI Volume screen appears.
37 4. Choose to enable CHAP authentication or choose None . 5. Enter a Target Name . This w ill be used by the Stackable NAS function to identify this export share. 6. Choose the current year from the Year dropd own. 7. Choose the current month from the Month dr opdown.
38 Folder Management From the Storage menu, choose Folder , and the Folder screen appears. This screen allows you to create and configur e folders on the N5200PRO volume. Folder Item Description Folder name Displays the name of the folder. Description Provides a description of the folder.
39 Add Folder Item Description RAID ID RAID volume where the new folder wil l reside. Folder Name Enter the name of the folder. Descrip tion Provid e a desc ription the fo lder. Browseable Enable or disable users from browsing the folder contents. If Yes is selected, then the share folder will be browseable.
40 NFS Share To allow NFS access to the share folder, enable the NFS Service , and then set up hosts with access rights by clicking Add . NFS Share Item Description Hostname Enter the name or IP address of the host Privilege Host has either read only or writeable access to the folder.
41 Folder Access Control List (ACL) On the Folder screen, press the ACL button, and the Access Control List screen appears. This screen allows you to configure access to the specific folder for users and groups. Select a user or a group from the left hand col umn and then choose Deny , Read Only , or Writable to confi gure their access level.
42 2. From the drop down select the group you would like to search for the user in. 3. Click Search . File System Check The File System Check allows you to perform a check on the integrity of your disks’ file system. Under the Storage menu, click Filesystm Ch eck and the File Sys tem Che ck prompt appears.
43 Click Start to begin the file sy stem check. Click Ba ck to return to the previous screen. Click Reboot to reboot the system. When the file system check is run, the syst em will show 20 lines of inf ormation until it is complete. Once complete, the resu lts will be shown at the bott om.
44 Network Management Use the Netwo rk menu to make network configurat ion settings as well as service support settings. WAN Configuration From the Netwo rk menu, choose WAN , and the WAN Configuration scree n appears. This screen displays the network parameters of the WAN connection.
45 LAN Configuration The N5200PRO supports two Gigabit Ethernet port s for higher service availability . To configure these ports, choose LAN from the Network menu, and the LAN Configuration screen appears. Press Apply to save your changes. LAN Configuration Item Description MAC Address Displays the MAC address of the LAN interface.
46 WLAN Configuration When a compatible wireless USB don gle is installed on the N5200PRO, the N5200PRO will become an access point, and the Network dropdown menu will cont ain a WLAN menu item. From the Network menu, choose WLAN , and the WLAN Configuration screen appears.
47 WAN LAN Exchange The N5200PRO is equipped with both WAN and LAN ports. The WAN LAN Exchange function allows you to exchange the functionality of these po rts directly through the Web User Interface. From the Netwo rk menu, choose the WAN LAN Exchange item, and the WAN LAN Exchange Supp ort screen appears.
48 AFP (Apple Network Setup) From the Netwo rk menu, choose the AFP item, and the AFP Configuration screen appears. This screen displays the configuration it ems for the Apple Filing Protocol. You can change any of the se items and press Apply to confirm your se ttings.
49 User and Group Management The N5200PRO has built-in user database th at allows administrators to manage user access using different group policies. From the Accounts menu, you can create, modify, and delete us ers, and assign them to gr o ups that you designate .
50 Modifying Users 1. Select an existing user from t he Local User Configurat ion screen. 2. Click on the Modify bu tton, an d Local User Setting scre en appears. 3. From here, you can enter a new password a nd re-enter to confirm, or use the << or >> buttons to have this u ser join or leave a group.
51 5. Select users to be in thi s group from the Users List by adding them to the Members List using the << button. 6. Click the Apply button to save your changes. Modifying Groups 1. On the Local Group Configuration screen, select a group name from the list.
52 ADS/NT Configuration If you have a Windows Active Directory Server (ADS) or Windows NT server to handle th e domain security in your net work, you can simply enable the ADS/NT support feature; the N5200PRO wi ll connect with the ADS/NT server and get all the inform ation of the domain users and groups automatically.

54 System Settings The System menu giv es you a weal th of settings that yo u can use to confi gure your N 5200PRO’ s system ad ministra tion functions. You can set up sys tem notifications, view s ystem logs, and even upgrade firmware from this menu.

56 System Configuration Backup and Restore From the System menu, choose the Config Mgmt item and the Sys tem Configuration Download /Upload screen appears. From here, you can download or upload stored system configurations. See the following table for a detailed description of each item.
57 Check Update Click to look for updates for the selected module. Module F ile Location of th e module f ile. Browse Click to browse the folder of your PC to locate the m odule files.
58 Change Administrator Password From the System menu, choose the Administrator Password item and the Change Administrator Password screen appears. Enter a new password in the New Password box and confirm your new password in the Confirm Password box.
59 Chapter 5: Additional Feature Setup Overview The N5200PRO can also act as an FTP Serv er, allowing employees and clients to transfer files u sing their favorit e FTP programs. The integrat ed Print Server allo ws you to share a single USB printer will all users on the netw ork.
60 Media Server With the built-in Medi a Server capability, the N5200PRO provides media streaming service to stand-alone networked home media adapters that support the UPnP AV protocol or are Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) standard compliant.

63 Windows Vista To set up the Printer Server in Windows Vista, follow the st eps below: 1. Open Printer Folder from the Control Panel . 2. Click the right mouse b utton in anywhere on t he Printers folder and then select Add Printer . 3. Select Add a network, wireless o r Bluetooth printer .
64 4. Select The printer that I want isn’t listed . You can press Th e printer that I want isn’t listed to go into nex t page without waiti ng for Searching for available printers to fi nish.
65 If your printer model is not listed, please contact your printer manufacturer for help. 7. Windows will attempt t o connect to the prin ter. 8. You can choose to set this printer as the defaul t printer by checking the Set as the default printer box.
66 Chapter 6: Using the N5200PRO Overview Once the N5200PRO is setup and operatin g, users on the network may manage all varieties of digital musi c, photos, or files by simp ly using their web browsers.
67 7. To upload a file from your computer to the current fol der, press the New file (upload) button. When the scree n appears, press Browse and locate the file to upload. P ress OK and the file is uploaded to th e current folder. 8. To delete a file or folde r, select th e file or folder’s check box.
68 4. When MAC OS X has co nnected to the N5200PRO successfully, an icon representing th e folder will appear on the MAC OS X desk top. You can access the folder by double clickin g on the icon. Mapping the N5200PRO as an iSCSI Drive With the N5200PRO, you are able to map it as an iSCSI drive.

76 Chapter 7: T ip s and T ricks USB and eSATA Storage Expansion The N5200PRO supports external USB hard disks through its three US B ports. Once a USB hard disk has successfully mou nted, the entire volu me will be copied automatically to the default USB HDD folder.
77 Remote Administration You can set up your N5 200PRO for re mote administrati on. With remote administration, you can access your N5200P RO over the Internet, even if yo ur N5200PRO is behind a ro uter. This is espe cially useful if yo u are traveling and suddenly need a fil e from your N5200PRO.

84 Appendix C: RAID Basics Overview A Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is a n array of several hard di sks that provide data security and high perf ormance. A RAI D system accesses several hard disks simultaneously, which improves I/O performance over a single h ard disk.
