About This Guide Introduction The ES3000 User Guide provides gen eral instructions for configuring and using the ES3000 Ethernet Switch. This guide pro vides information ge neral in nature for those who may be new to the E3000 Ethernet Switch device.
ES3000 User Gu ide viii • Sequential lists (those describing step-by-s tep procedures) appear as numbered lis ts. Service Information If a problem with is encountered with the equipment, co ntact the Symbol Customer Support . Refer to Appendix C for contact informa tion.
Switch Management Overview 1.1 About the ES3000 Ethernet Switch The ES3000 Ethernet Switch comes in two versions. One version provides Power over Ethernet (PoE) in accord ance with IEEE standa rd 802.3a f. This allows compatible Ethernet devices to obtain power from th e 10/100BaseT Ethernet wiring.
ES3000 User Gu ide 1-2 1.2 Management Access Overview The Symbol ES3000 Managed Switch provides us er interface flexibility using: • An administration console • A Web Browser interface • External SNMP-based network -management application. The administration console and Web Browser inte rface ar e embedded in the switch firmware.
Switch Management Overview 1-3 virtual terminal protocol (T elnet), and a terminal connecting directly to the console port through a null- modem serial cable.
ES3000 User Gu ide 1-4 1.5.2 Package Contents Inspect the package contents and report any missing or dama ged items to the Symbol sales representative.
Switch Management Overview 1-5 1.5.3 Supplying Power T o cable the ES3000 Ethernet Switch to rece ive power: 1. Connect the supplied AC power cord to the power con nector on the rear of the Ethernet Switch. 2. Plug the cord into a standard AC outlet with a voltage range from 100VAC to 240V AC.
ES3000 User Gu ide 1-6 1.6 Administration of t he ES3000 Ethernet Switch There are three management user interfaces on the switch: menu-driven, CLI, and Web. The menu- driven and CLI interfaces are acces sed using a direct serial conn ection or via T elnet over an Ethernet connection.
Switch Management Overview 1-7 T o use the ES3000 Comman d Line Interface (CLI) to configure the device: 1. Use HyperT erminal (or other communications utility) to se cure a connection to the ES3000 Ethernet Switch. 2. Hit the return key < Enter > to display the ES3000 logon scre en.
ES3000 User Gu ide 1-8 2. Enter a user name of admin and passwor d of symbol . Press OK . The Web interface General Information page displays. Refer to Chapter 3 for information on using the ES3000 serial interfac e to configure the device. Refer to Chapter 4 for instructions on using the Web interface to configure the device.

Specifications & Pin Assignments A.1 Specifications The ES3000 Ethernet Switch has the following specifications: Width 482.6 mm with moun ting brackets 440 mm without mout ning bracket s Height 44 mm (1RU) Depth 256 mm Weight Po E version 8.95 lbs.
ES3000 User Gu ide A-2 A.2 RJ-45 Plug and RJ-45 Connector In a Fast Etherne t network, it is important all 100B ASE-T certified Category 5 cabling use RJ-45 plug s. The RJ-45 plug accepts 4-pair UTP or shielded twisted-pair (STP) 100 -ohm cable and connects into the RJ-45 connector .
Cabling Guidelines B.1 Fast Ethernet Cable Guidelines Fast Ethernet uses UTP cable, as specifie d in the IEEE 802.3u standard for 100BASE-TX.The specification requires Catego ry 5 UTP cable con sisting of either tw o-pair or four -pair twisted insulated copper conduc tors bound in a single plastic she ath.
ES3000 User Gu ide B-2 B.1.2 T erminat ion Method T o minimize cross-talk nois e, mainta in the twist ratio of the cable up to the point of termination; verify untwist at any RJ-45 p lug or patch pa nel does not e xceed 0.
B-3 technology automatically sen ses which connection, MDI or MDI-X, is needed and makes the right connection. B.4 Patch Panels and Cables If using patch panels, ensure th ey meet the 100BASE-TX requirements.
ES3000 User Gu ide B-4 B.5.3 Length The maximum distance limitation between two pieces of equipment is 100 m, as per the original Ethernet specification. The end-to-e nd link is called the "channel." TSB-67 define s the "Basic Li nk" which is the por tion of the link that is pa rt of the building infrastructure.
B-5 B.5.6 Patch Cables When installing equipment, replace old patch pane l cables that do not meet Category 5e specifications. As pointed out in the NEXT section, this near end piece of cable is critical for successful operation.
