21 2 Preparing the Host S y st em This chapter reviews the follo wing operating system information : • Selecting a SCSI Bu s for the Libr ar y (SCSI Libraries Only) • Determining SCSI ID Usage •.
Chapter 2. Preparing the H ost System 22 S elec ting a SCSI Bus for the Librar y (SCSI Libraries Only) The single-ended/low-v oltage differential (S E/L VD) librar y operates in either single- ended or low-v oltage differen tial SCSI mode, dep ending on the type of b us that is attached.
Chapter 2. Preparing the H ost System 23 alread y in use, and wh ich SCSI IDs are still av ailable. The librar y requires one SCSI ID for each installed drive, as w ell as a SCSI ID for the librar y itself.
Chapter 2. Preparing the H ost System 24.
25 3 Preparing the Library Preparing the library includes the following , which are outlined in this chapt er: • Unpacking the Librar y • Selecting an Appropriate E nvironment for the Libr ary •.
Chapter 3. Preparing th e Librar y 26 S elec ting an Appropriate En vironment for the Library Med ia a nd Ha rd ware E nviro nme nt When planning the installation of your librar y , note that the librar y , drives a nd media must be mainta ined in a controlled enviro nment.
Chapter 3. Preparing the Librar y 27 Air Q ualit y Large quantities of airborne particles cause erratic operation of the driv es and library . The library comes with a n inta k e air filter behind the front panel to reduce the amount of airborne particulates entering the library .
Chapter 3. Preparing th e Librar y 28 Preparing to Conn ec t th e Libra ry Before connecting the librar y to the host system, y ou must prepare the library by completing the following steps: 1. Select the mode of librar y operation . See Selecting th e Mode of Library Operation on page 29.
Chapter 3. Preparing the Librar y 29 S elec ting the Mode of Librar y Opera tion A SCSI librar y can operate in either single-bus or dual-bu s mode. Note: The follo wing information on single-bu s and dual-bu s librarie s only applies to SCSI libraries.
Chapter 3. Preparing th e Librar y 30 Dual B us Mode If you wa nt to use tw o hosts, or if you ha v e a librar y (either sin gle-ended or differential) with three or four insta lled drives and w ant t.
Chapter 3. Preparing the Librar y 31 Split-Bus Co nfigura tion The librar y firmware v ersion 5.00 (and later) has the ability to logically split the librar y into tw o separatel y addressable logica l library systems. This feat ure allows tw o hos t machines to s hare the same library hardw are.
Chapter 3. Preparing th e Librar y 32 By default, the Librar y 2 Slots is set to Off for no sp lit logical librar y operation (Fig ure 3- 2). 2. Using the Librar y 2 Slots field, set the number of slots dev oted to the second logical libr ary .
Chapter 3. Preparing the Librar y 33 Managing the Spl it-Bus Configura tion A split log ical library appears t o the hos t system as tw o i ndependent ph ysical libraries. In the example below , the li brar y is config ured as tw o logical libr aries, where Logi cal Librar y 2 has 10 slots a nd its SCSI ID is set to 5.
Chapter 3. Preparing th e Librar y 34 As explai ned abo v e, each logical library has a s eparate SCSI bus, separate driv es, and separate sl ots. The followi ng diagrams illus tra te different logical li brary configuratio ns.
Chapter 3. Preparing the Librar y 35 P ossible Logica l Library Configuration 2 In the exam ple below , the division of slots is not equal betw een host machines.
Chapter 3. Preparing th e Librar y 36 S etting SCSI IDs First, make sure that th e libr ary pow er is off, then set the librar y on a work surface with the rear panel facing you . Note: The following S CSI ID infor mation on ly applies to SCSI l ibrar ies.
Chapter 3. Preparing the Librar y 37 Librar y SCSI ID In both single and dual bus m ode, the Library SCSI ID switch on the rear panel determines th e SCSI ID for S CSI Bus 1.
Chapter 3. Preparing th e Librar y 38 S etting the Lib rar y Configura tion Switch Wi th the librar y off, use the Spectra Logic scre wdr iver to set the configuration switch. The librar y configur ation switch deter mines the operating mode of the librar y .
Chapter 3. Preparing the Librar y 39 Co nnec ting the SCSI Cables and T ermina tors Four 68-pin micro-SCSI con nectors on the rear panel connect the li brar y to the s ystem SCSI busse s. The SCSI connectors are labeled SCSI P ort 1 (I N and OUT) and SCSI Port 2 (IN and OUT).
Chapter 3. Preparing th e Librar y 40 Connec ting the S erial Ca ble Most backup softw are pa ckages do not requ ire a serial connection betw een the library and th e host . • W ith the SSCL inter face, you will need both ser ial and SCSI connections b etw een the host an d the librar y .
Chapter 3. Preparing the Librar y 41 Connec ting the Librar y to Fibre Ch annel Consult the documentat ion for y our host operatin g systems and Fi bre Channel ad apter card s for informati on on ad ding n ew de vices.
