24 Preparing the PSP™ system for use Before usin g the PSP™ sys tem for the fir st time after pu rchase, you m ust follow thes e steps to charge th e battery.
25 Preparation Preparing the PSP™ system for use 1 Connect the AC Adaptor to the DC IN 5V conn ector on the bottom of the system. 2 Plug the AC Power Cord into a n electrical outlet. The POWER indicator lights up in orange, indicating that charging has begun.

27 Preparation Connecting the Headphones with Remote Control 1 Connect the Headph ones to the PSP™ system. Hints • The Remote Control is exclusively for use with the PSP™ system and cannot be used with other devices. Remote controls made for use with other devices cannot be used to operate the PSP™ system.

30 Using Sleep Mode If the PSP™ syst em is switched to Sle ep Mode, the software tha t is playing will be paused. Notices • Do not put the system in Sleep Mode while the Memory Stick Duo™ access indicator is on.
31 Basic oper ations Using Sleep Mode 1 Slide the POWER/HOLD switch up again. Sleep Mode is cleare d. Hints • You can also clear Sleep Mode by pressing the u (Play/Pause) button of the remote control, if the system was put in Sleep Mode during music or video playback.
32 Inser ting a UMD™ Notice Do not eject a UMD™ during playback. 1 Slide the OPEN latch on the PSP™ system top. The disc cove r opens. 2 Insert a UMD™. With the disc l abel facing the system re ar, slide th e UMD™ in the dire ction of the arrow until it is fully inserted.

38 Battery The battery cha rge level is displayed on the screen. Estimating the rem aining battery power Hints • If the POWER indicator flashes green, save game progress and recharge the battery. If the battery runs out before you save, game progress will be lost.
39 Basic oper ations Battery • Battery charge level can also be checked in "Battery Information" under "System Settings" ( page 98). • If the PSP™ system is left unused after the battery runs out, the date and time settings may be reset.
40 Battery Hint The Battery Pack lifespan varies depending on how it is stored, the conditions of use and environmental factors, such as temperature. For safety reaso ns, turn off the sy stem and remove th e AC Power Cord from the electrical ou tlet befor e replacing t he Battery Pa ck.

If you have a device t hat records video in a format * that can be play ed on the PSP™ syste m, you can pl ay the vide o simply by inserti ng the Memory Stick Duo™ from t he compati ble device into the P SP™ system.

59 Music Listening to music Hints • If the START button or the u button on the Remote Control is pressed in step 3, the first track of the first group will begin playing. • If the HOME button or the SELECT button is pressed during playback, the screen will return to the Home Menu.

When using a digita l still camera that is co mpatible with the Memor y Stick Duo™, photos can be disp layed by i nserting t he Memory St ick Duo™ fro m the camera direct ly into th e PSP™ syste m.
84 Saving images on a Memory Stick Duo™ * A Memory Stick Duo Adaptor (model number MSAC-M2: a Sony product sold separately) is required if the slot on the device you are using is able to handle only the standard-size Memory Stick™.
85 Network Using the Internet 1 Select from the home menu. 2 Select an icon, and then press the button. Icons displayed under Network Network Using the Internet LocationFree™ Player You can watch TV or videos by using the wireless networking feature to connect to a LocationFree™ Base Station (a Sony product sold separately).
86 Connecting to the Inter net You can connec t to the Inter net to view Web pa ges using the Internet br owser. Note that you must be in an Internet -accessible lo cation to conn ect to the Internet. 1 Check that you have completed ne twork settings.

When the sys tem remains idle for a certain period of t ime, it s aves power b y automatica lly turnin g off the backlight on the LCD s creen.
