1-5 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE INTERIOR (11) Developer cartridges This contains the developer that is necessary to transfer the toner to the paper. When replacing the drum cart ridge, the developer cartridge must be removed before the drum cartridge is replaced.
1-6 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE SIDE AND BACK (1) USB connec tor (A type) Supports USB 2.0 (Hi -Speed). This is used to connect a USB device such as USB memory to the machine. This connector is not initiall y available for use. If yo u wish to use the conne ctor, contact your service assistan ce.
1-7 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE OPERATION PANEL (1) Display Messages and keys appear in the display. Use the arrow keys and the [OK] key to select displayed items and perform various operations. ☞ USING THE OPERATION PANEL (page 1-8) (2) [OK] key Press this key to ente r a selected setting.

1-9 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE Selecting items in lists and returning to the previous screen (1) When selections appear as a list in a setting screen, select the desired item in the list with the keys. Items that are currently set are indicated by . (2) Press the [OK] key to enter your selec tion.
1-10 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE Entering with the arrow keys To change the nu mber of copies, enter a nu mber as follows. Example: 123 (1) Select the number with the keys. (2) Use the keys to move the frame to the next place. (3) Repeat steps (1) and (2) to enter 2 and 3.

(1) Common buttons The [Submit] button used to st ore settings, the [Update] button used to update se ttings, and the [Can cel] button used to cancel a setting and return to the previous screen appear here.
1-13 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE TURNING THE POWER ON AND OFF The machine has two power switches. One is the main po wer switch on the left side of the machine, and the ot her is the [POWER] key ( ) on the right side o f the operation pan el.
1-14 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE ENERGY SAVE FUNCTIONS This product has the following two en ergy save functions that conform to the Energy Star guidelines t o help conserve natural reso urces and reduce environme ntal pollution.
1-15 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE USER AUTHENTICATION User authentication re stricts the use of the machine to users that have been registered. The functions th at each user is allowed to use can be specified, allowing the machine to be customized to meet the needs of your w orkplace.
1-16 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE If an incorrect use r number is entered 3 times in a row... If "A Warning when Login Fails" is enab led in the Web page, the ma chine will lock for 5 minutes if an incorrect user number is ente red 3 times in a row.
1-17 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE AUTHENTICATION BY LOGIN NAME / PASSWORD The following procedure is used to log in using a login na me and password received fro m the administrator of the machine or the adminis trator of th e LDAP serve r.
1-18 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 3 Select the [Password] key. A text entry screen for enteri ng the password will appear. Enter your password that is stored in "User List" in the Web page. If you are logging i n to an LDAP server, enter the passwo rd that is stored with your LDAP server login name.
1-19 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE If an incorrect login name or password is ente red 3 times in a row... If "A Warning when Login Fails" is enab led in the Web page, the ma chine will lock for 5 minutes if an incorrect login name or password is entered 3 ti mes in a row.
1-20 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE ACCESSING THE WEB PAGE The login method f or accessing the Web server in the machine var ies depending on whether or not user authenticatio n is enabled. For information on accessing the Web server in the ma chine, see "ACCESSING THE WEB SERVER IN THE MACHINE" in the Quick Start Guide.
1-21 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE USER CONTROL User Control is used to configure sett ings for user authentica ti on in the Web page. Select the [User Control] key in the Web page m enu to config ure the settin gs. USER LIST This is used to store, edit, and de lete users when user authenti cation is enabled.
1-22 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE Factory-stored users The following users are sto red in the machine at the factory. • Administrat or: Factory-stored account fo r the administrator of the ma chine. • User: This is used when network authe ntication is used a nd a login name not st ored in the machine is directly entered.
1-23 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE *1 Does not appear when "User Number" is selected for the authentication method. *2 Only appears when "User Numb er" is se lected for the authenticatio n method. *3 Not required when network authentication is used, as the password stored in the LDAP server is used.
1-24 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE DEFAULT SETTING These settings enable or disable user authentic ation and specif y the authentication method. When user authen tication is enabled, each user of the machi ne is regist ered. When a user logs in, settings for that user are applied.
1-25 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE The Number of User Name Displayed Setting on Operation Panel The number of user s that are displayed in the user selection screen can be sele cted (6, 12, or 18 users). A Warning when Login Fails This setting is used to display a warning and prohibit login for five minutes if login fails three tim es in a row.
1-26 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE PAGE LIMIT GROUP LIST This is used to store grou ps of Account Limit Set tings. Th e page limits for each user are specified by selecting one of these stor ed groups when the user is stor ed. When the [Page Limit Group List] key is selected, the following screen appears.
1-27 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE AUTHORITY GROUP LIST Use this to st ore groups of user auth ority setting s. The aut hority of each user is specified by selecting one of these stored groups when t he user is stored. When the [Authorit y Group List] key is selected, the following scr een appears.

1-29 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE FAVORITE OPERATION GROUP LIST This is used to store favorite operat ion groups. Favorite Operation Group Registration Groups of preferr ed settings can be stored as "favor ite operation groups".
1-30 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE VIEW USER COUNT This displays the tot al number of pages prin ted by each user. When the [View User Count] key is selected, the f ollowing screen appears. (1) User List This shows the factory-stored users and the currently stored users.
1-31 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE REMOTE OPERATION OF THE MACHINE The remote oper ation function allows you to opera te the machine from your computer . When this funct ion is added, th e same screen as the operat ion panel scree n appears on your computer.
1-32 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE JOB LOG The machine ret ains a log of the jobs that are perform ed. Settings for the job log stored in t he machine are configured on the Web page. Select [Job Log] on the Web page to configur e the settings. SAVE / DELETE JOB LOG The log of jobs executed on the machine can be stored or deleted.
1-33 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE ITEMS RECORDED IN THE JOB LOG The machine recor ds the jobs that are performed in the job log . The main information that is recorded in the job log is described below.
1-34 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE *In some environments this is not recorded. 16 Main items Number of Reserved Sets Number of specified sets. 17 Number of Completed Sets Number of completed sets. 18 Number of Reserved Pages Number of reserved print jobs. 19 Number of Completed Pages Number of completed pages of a set.
1-35 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE STORAGE BACKUP User information stored in the machine can be backed up to your comput er or restored from your compu ter via the Web page. Settings and infor mation stored in the machine can be backed u p to your computer.
1-36 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE DEVICE CLONING Device cloning is used to save the machin e's setting information in XML format and copy the information to another machine. This function save s you the trouble of repeatedly conf iguring the same settings in multip le machines.
1-37 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE IMPORTANT POINTS ABOUT PAPER This section provides information that you should know before loading paper in the pape r trays. Be sure to read this sect ion before loading paper. NAMES AND LOCATIONS OF TRAYS The names of the trays are as follows.
1-38 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE Types of paper that can be used in each tray The following types of paper can be loaded in each tray. " – " in the table indicates "cannot be used". *1 "Heavy paper " is heavy pap er up to 110 lb s.
1-39 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE Paper that cannot be used • Specia l media for inkjet pr inters (fine paper, glo ssy paper, glossy film, etc.) • Carbon paper or thermal paper • Pasted pape r • Paper with clips • Paper with fo ld marks • Torn pape r • Oil-feed t ransparency film • Thin paper less than 15 lbs.
1-40 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE TRAY SETTINGS FOR TRAYS 1 TO 4 LOADING PAPER AND CHANGING THE PAPER SIZE A maximum of 500 sh eets of paper from size 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" to size 8-1/2" x 14" (A5 t o A4) can be loaded in trays 1 and 2.
1-41 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 4 Insert the paper into the tray. Load the paper w ith the print side face up. The stack must not be higher than the indicator li ne (maximum of 500 sh eets). • If paper is loaded higher than the line, paper misfeeds may occur.
1-42 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE LOADING PAPER IN THE BYPASS TRAY The bypass tray ca n be used to print o n plain paper, envelop es, label sheets, and other special media. Up to 100 shee ts of paper can be loaded ( up to 40 sheets of heavy paper) fo r continuous printing similar to th e other trays.
1-43 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE IMPORTANT POINTS WHEN USING THE BYPASS TRAY • When using plai n paper other than SHARP standar d pap er or special med ia other than SHARP-r ecommended transparency film, or when printing on the reverse side of previously used paper, the paper must be loaded o ne sheet at a time.
1-44 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE Loading envelopes When inserting envelopes in the bypa ss tray, place them aligned to th e left side in the orientation shown be low. Only the front side o f envelopes can be printed on. Be su re to place the front side face do wn.
1-45 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE This section describe s the peripheral devices that can be us ed with the machine and explains how to u se the finisher, as well as Sharp O SA. PERIPHERAL DEVICES Peripheral devices can be insta lled on the machine to increase its range of functio nality.
1-46 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE FINISHER The finisher is equippe d with the of fset functi on, which of fsets each set of output f rom the pr evious set. In addition, ea ch set of sorted output can be stapled . PART NAMES The following part s can be accessed when the finish er is open.
1-47 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE SHARP OSA Sharp OSA (Open Syst ems Architecture) is an architectu re that enables external applicatio ns to be directly connected to a machine over a ne twork. When a machine that suppor ts Sharp OSA is used, the keys that are di splayed on the operation pane l and functions can be linked to an external app lication.
1-48 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE EXTERNAL ACCOUNT APPLICATION An external account ap plication can be used in "external au the ntication mode" or "external count mode". When external authenticatio n mode is used, the login screen is retrieved fr om the application when the machine is started.
1-49 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE This section explains how t o clean the machine and replace the toner cartridges and the toner collection con tainer. REPLACING THE TONER CARTRIDGES When it is time to replace a supply item, a message in structing you to replace the item will appear in the display.
1-50 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 3 Take out the new tone r cartridge, hold it with both hands, and shake 5 or 6 times horizontally. • When shaking the toner cartridge, be sure to shake with the protective material inse rted in the cartridge. If you shake the cartridge afte r removing the protective material, toner may spill out.
1-51 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 6 Close the front cover. • Before moving the machine , remove the toner cartridge. Mo ving the machine with the toner cartridge insta lled may cause a failure. • When the developer cartridge has bee n removed, do not remove or insert the toner cartridge.
1-52 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE REPLACING THE TONER COLLECTION CONTAINER The toner collection container collects excess toner that is produced durin g printing. When it is time to replace a supply it em, a message instructing you to replace t he item will appear in the display.
1-53 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 3 Remove the toner collection container. • If the toner collection container is tippe d forward too far, it will not be possible to remo ve it. • Do not point the holes down as used toner will spill out. • Hold the container by both hands and lift it up slowly.
1-54 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE Caution • Do not throw the toner collec tion container into a fire. Toner may fly and cause burns. • Store the toner collection container out of th e reach of small children.
1-55 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE REPLACING THE DEVELOPER CARTRIDGE / DRUM CARTRIDGE Before replacing the developer cartr idge or drum cartrid ge, turn off the main po wer of the machine an d wait briefly.
1-56 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 3 Open the main charger cover. (1) Turn the main charger cover lock levers in the direction of an arrow below. When the lock levers a re horizontal, the lo ck is released. (2) Grasp the lock levers and tip the cover forward.
1-57 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 5 Shake the new developer cartridge 5 or 6 times as shown. Hold the developer cartridge firmly as shown below and shake forward and back, left and right. Remove the protecti ve material after shaking the deve loper cartridge.
1-58 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 8 Grasp the developer cartridge lock and replace it on the machine. 9 Hold the developer cartridge wit h one hand and slowly remove the seal with the other hand. Slowly pull the seal straight and horizontally out. If excessive force is used or the sea l is pulled out diag onally, it may tear.
1-59 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 12 Close the front cover. Take care that your fingers are not pinched when closing the cover. 13 Turn on the power. Switch the main power switch "ON" and press the [POWER] key ( ) on the opera tion panel to turn on the o peration panel power.
1-60 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE REPLACING THE DRUM CARTRIDGE When it is time to replace a supply it em, a message instructing yo u to replace the item will app ear in the display. When replacing a drum cart ridge, carefully check the indicated color. If black is indicated, replace t he drum cartridge for black.
1-61 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 3 Remove the protective material from the drum cartridge and slowly insert the drum cartridge along the guides. Make sure that the mark on the drum cartridge is aligned with the mark on the machin e as you insert the dru m cartridge.
1-62 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE REPLACING THE STAPLE CARTRIDGE IN THE FINISHER When the staple cartridge runs out of staples, a message will appea r in the operation panel. Follow the procedure below to replace the st aple cartridge. 1 Open the cover. 2 While pressing the lever over to the left, slide the finisher to the left until it stops.
1-63 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 5 Insert a new staple cartridge into the staple case as shown. Push the staple cartridge in until it clicks into place. 6 Replace the staple case. Push the staple case in until it clicks into place. 7 Slide the finisher back to the right.
1-64 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE REGULAR MAINTENANCE To ensure that the ma chine continues to provide top quality performance, periodically clean the machine . CLEANING THE MAIN CHARGER OF THE PHOTOCONDUCTIVE DRUM If black lines or colored lines appea r, use the charger cleaner to clean the main charg er.
1-65 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 3 Release the lock leve rs and o pen the main charger cover. ☞ REPLACING THE DEVELOPER CARTR IDGE (page 1-55) 4 Remove the charger cleaner. (1) Flip down the charger cleaner lock (A) in the direction of the arrow, and lift the left end of the charger cleaner.
1-66 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 6 Repeat step 5 with each of the other main chargers. There are a total of 4 places to be clea ned in the machine as shown. 7 Replace the charger cleaner in its original position. Insert the tip of the charger clea ner in toward the right and then press down on the end of the charger cleaner.
1-67 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE CLEANING THE BYPASS FEED ROLLER If you find that paper fed from the bypass tray misfeeds or is soiled by the roller, clean the roller.
1-68 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 5 Turn on the power. Switch the main power switch "ON" and press the [POWER] key ( ) on the opera tion panel to turn on the o peration panel power.
1-69 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE CLEANING THE LASER UNIT When the laser unit inside t he machine becomes dirty, line patterns (co lored lines) may form in the printed imag e. Follow the steps below to clean the lase r unit. Identifying lines (colo red lin es) caused by a dirty laser unit • Colored lines alwa ys appear in the same pl ace.
1-70 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 4 Make sure that the cleaner at the tip of the cleaning tool is not dirty. If the cleaner is dirty, remove the cleaner and replace it with a cle an one. For th e procedure for replacing the clea ner, see steps 5 through 7.
1-71 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 8 Clean the laser unit. (1) Point the cleaner down and slowly insert the tool into the hole that you wish to clean. The parts of the wri ting unit that re quire cleaning are indicate d by labels simi lar to (A). (2) Insert the cleaning tool all the way into th e hole and then pull it back out.
1-72 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 11 Install the toner collection container. ☞ REPLACING THE TONER C OLLECTION CONTAINER (page 1-52) 12 Close the front cover.
1-73 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE CLEANING THE PT CHARGER If black or colored lines still re main after the main charger ha ve been cleaned, use the PT charger cleaner to clean the PT charger. 1 Press the [POWER] key ( ) on the operation panel to turn off the panel power, and then switch the main power switch to the off position.
1-74 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 5 Close the front cover. Take care that your fingers are not pinched when closing the cover. 6 Turn on the power. Switch the main power switch "ON" and press the [POWER] key ( ) on the opera tion panel to turn on the o peration panel power.
1-75 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE This section expla ins the text entry scre en. FUNCTIONS OF THE MAIN KEYS ENTERING TEXT Key Descripti on This key changes the text entry screen from the lower case screen to the upper case screen. The upper case screen will continu e to appear until the [Caps] key is selected again so that it is no longer highlighted.
1-76 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE Select this key and search results will appear based on the entere d characters. When this key is selected, the "Input Mode " screen appears. Input mode screen Select this key to sele ct character entry mode. Select this key to select sy mbol entry mode.

2-3 PRINTING PRINTER FUNCTION OF THE MACHINE The machine is equippe d standard with a full color printing funct ion. To enable printing fr om your computer, a printer driver must be installed. See the table below to det ermine which printer driver to use in your environme nt.
2-4 PRINTING BASIC PRINTING PROCEDURE The following example expla ins how to print a document fr om "WordPad ", which is a standard accessory pro gram in Windows. PRINTING FROM WINDOWS 1 Select [Print] from the [File] menu of WordPad. If you are using W indows 7, click the button.
2-5 PRINTING 3 Select print settings. (1) Click the [Paper] tab. (2) Select the paper size. To select settings on other tabs, click the desired tab and then select the settings. (3) Click the [OK] button. • Make sure the pa per size is the sa me as t he paper size set in the software application.
2-6 PRINTING SELECTING THE PAPER This section explains how to configur e the "Pape r Selection" settin g on the [ Paper] tab of the printer driver properties window. Before printin g, check the paper sizes, pa per types, and paper remainin g in the machine's trays.
2-7 PRINTING PRINTING ON ENVELOPES The bypass tray can be used to pr int on special media such as envelopes. The proced ure for printing on an envelope from the printer driver properties screen is descri bed below.
2-8 PRINTING PRINTING WHEN THE USER AUTHENTICATION FUNCTION IS ENABLED When the user authenticat ion function is en abled, your us er information (login name, password, etc.) must be entered in the printer dr iver properties window bef ore you can print.
2-9 PRINTING 2 Enter your login name and password. (1) Click the [Job Handling] ta b. (2) Enter your user information. • When authentication is by login name/password Select the [Login Name] and [Password] checkboxes so that checkmarks appear, and enter your login name and password.
2-10 PRINTING VIEWING PRINTER DRIVER HELP When selecting settings in the print er driver, you can display Help to view explanations of the sett ings. Pop-up help Help can be displayed for a setting by clicking the setting and pr essing the [F1] key. * To view Help for a setting in Windows 98/Me/NT 4.
2-11 PRINTING SAVING FREQUENTLY USED PRINT SETTINGS Settings configur ed on each of the tabs at the time of prin ting can be saved as user se tting s. Saving frequently used settings or complex color settings u nder an assigned name make s it easy to select those sett ings the next time you need to use them .
2-12 PRINTING 3 Check and save the settings. (1) Check the displayed settings . (2) Enter a name for the settings (maximum of 20 characters). (3) Click the [OK] button. 4 Click the [OK] button. 5 Start printing. • Up to 30 sets of user settings can be saved.
2-13 PRINTING USING SAVED SETTINGS Deleting saved settings Select the us er settings t hat you want to delete in (1) of step 2 above, and click the [Delet e] button. 1 Open the printer driver properties window from the print window of the software application.
2-14 PRINTING CHANGING THE PRINTER DRIVER DEFAULT SETTINGS The default se ttings of the printer dr iver can be changed using t he procedure below. The settin gs selected using this procedure are saved an d become th e default se ttings when printing from a software application.
2-15 PRINTING 4 Configure the settings and click the [OK] button. For explanations of the settings, see printer driver Help..
2-16 PRINTING BASIC PRINTING PROCEDURE The following example expla ins how to print a document from the stand ard accessory program "TextEdit" in Mac OS X ("SimpleText" in Mac OS 9). SELECTING PAPER SETTINGS Select paper settings in the pr inter driver before selecting the print command .

4-2 TROUBLESHOOTING This section explains what to do whe n a paper misfeed occurs in the machine. REMOVING MISFEEDS When a paper misfeed occurs, the message "A misfeed has occurred." will appear in the di splay and printing will stop. In this event, select the [Information] key in the display.
