9 T o Set Up Y our Home Netw ork The HomePNA modem that is installed in your Son y V AIO ® computer is designed to use the e xisting phone lines in your home to estab lish a closed home network. This section provides inf or mation on setting up a home network using your V AIO computer .
Home Networking Solutions 10 Basic system requirements The basic system requirements are as follo ws: ❑ Microsoft W indows Me ™ ❑ Microsoft W indows 2000 ❑ Microsoft W indows 98 ❑ Microsoft W indows 98 Second Edition (SE) ❑ Each computer system on the network must be able to connect to a standard telephone jack (RJ-11).
Configuring your home network 11 Configuring y our home netw ork The basic configuration setup presumes that your V AIO ® computer is set up to work correctly with your type of telephone access and your Internet Service Provider (ISP). An y method of connecting to the Internet provides access to all of the linked computers.
Home Networking Solutions 12 Connecting y our HomePNA modem The HomePN A modem installed in your V AIO computer has a single jack (RJ-11). Each computer on your home network requires installation of a compatible HomePN A de vice.
Connecting your HomePNA modem 13 If you want to use a single wall jack for your computer’ s Internet access and for a standard telephone, you can use an optional 1-to-2 jack adapter (splitter) in the telephone wall jack to accommodate both lines. If you choose to use a splitter: 1 Plug the splitter into the telephone wall jack.
Home Networking Solutions 14 Linking Computers and P eripheral De vices Y our V AIO ® computer uses the W indows Me ™ operating system, which automates the process of linking other computers and peripheral de vices on your home network. W indows Me simplif ies network sharing of a single Internet connection across a home network.

From the wizard ’ s Internet Connection screen, select the Y es option, which establishes your V AIO computer as the Internet gate way for your home network. Select “ A direct connection to my ISP using the following de vice: ” from the second le vel options.
Home Networking Solutions 16 4 Click Next. From the wizard ’ s Internet Connection Sharing screen, select the Y es option. From the drop-do wn list, select “ BCM HPN A 10Mbps NIC.
Linking Computers and P er ipheral De vices 17 6 Click Next. From the wizard ’ s Computer and workgroup names screen, establish a unique name for your computer and for the network group to which it belongs. The unique computer and workgroup names identify each computer on your home network.
Home Networking Solutions 18 7 Click Next. From the wizard ’ s Share f iles and printers screen, you can set your file and printer sharing preferences. When you share your My Documents folder , the default setting permits full access by other users on your home network.

From the wizard’ s Home Networking Setup disk screen, you can create a setup disk for other linked computers that use the W indows® 98 operating system. If all of your linked computers are running W indows Me, you do not need to create a setup disk.
