13 Getting started • T o use up the batter ies comple tel y , put the camera in the slide show mode (page 6 5) and leave it that w ay until the batter ies are used up.

25 Shoot ing still ima g e s Basic still image shooting – Usi ng auto mode Holding the cam era correctly When s hooting pictur es with the cam era, be carefu l so that your fing ers do not blo ck the lens port io n, find er window , flash e mitter, or AF illumina to r (pa ge s 8 , 9).

You can shoot subjects appr oaching up to 10 cm (4 in ches) wh en the z oom is s et to i ts W- end. How ev er, the av ai labl e f oc us dist an ce depe nds on the zoo m po siti on.
30 • When shooti ng in macro mode, use the LCD screen. If you use the fi nder, the limits of what you see and what you actually shoot may be different. This is due to the parallax effect. • When shooti ng in macro mode, the focus range is very narrow and you may not be able to focus on the whole of the s ubject.

50 • When you are shooting movies and you choose Multipoint AF , the distance to the center of the LCD screen is estimate d as an average, so the AF works ev en with a certain amount of vibration.
51 Advance d still im age shoot ing Shooti ng techni que s When shooting with the subject at the edge of the frame, or when using Center AF , the camera may focus on the c enter instead of on the subject at the edge of t he frame. In a case like th is, use AF lock to focus on the subject, and then recompos e the picture and s hoot.

54 Exposure In addition to the focus and other settings, it is also important to adjust the exposure in order t o take beautiful pictures. Exposure is the amount of light that the CCD of the digital still came ra is able to re c eive. This v alue changes according to the combination of aperture and shutter speed.
55 Advance d still image shoot ing Adjusting th e exposure – EV adju st ment You ca n manu a lly shif t the ex posure va lue determin ed by th e camera. Use thi s mode when y ou do not get the pr ope r ex posure, for instan ce, the subjec t and its back ground have hi gh c ont rast (light and dar k).
56 Displaying a histogram A histogram is a gra ph show ing the brigh t ne ss o f a n ima ge . Th e hor iz ont al axis shows the bri ght ne ss, an d the vertical axis shows the numbe r of pixels. The gra ph display indi ca tes a dark image when skewed to th e le ft side , and a brigh t ima ge when skew ed to th e r ight side .
57 Advance d still image shoot ing Shooti ng t echniques While shooting image s , the c ame ra automatically determines the exposure. When shooting a whitish overall image such as a backlit subject or a snowy scene, the camer a judges that t he subject is bright and may set a darker exposure for the image.
