4 Enjoy your A TRAC CD W alkman! Thank you for purchasing the D-NF610. This CD W alkman is called an “ A TRAC CD W alkman, ” because you can enjoy “ A TRAC CDs” on it. Cr eate original A TRAC CDs! Y ou can make your own A TRAC CD. The procedure is very simple.
5 Enjoy your A TRAC CD Walkman! What is an A TRAC CD? An A TRAC CD is a CD-R/R W on which audio data compressed in the A TRA C3plus/A TRA C3 format has been recorded. About 30 audio CDs can be recorded on a CD-R/R W .* Y ou can also record MP3 files by con verting the files to the A TRAC3plus/A TRAC3 format.
6 Music sources playable on this CD player Y ou can play the following 3 music sources on this CD player: • Audio CDs •A TRA C3plus/A TRA C3 format files • MP3 files Usable disc formats Y ou can use ISO 9660 Level 1/2 and Joliet e xtension format discs only .
7 The major specifications of the acceptable disc format are: • Maximum directory le vels: 8 • Acceptable characters for a file/folder name: A - Z, a - z, 0 - 9, _ (underscore) Notes • When naming files, be sure to add the file e xtension “mp3” to the file name.
8 Differ ence between A TRAC3plus/A TRAC3 and MP3 Groups and folders The A TRAC3plus/A TRA C3 format has a very simple structure. It consists of “files” and “groups. ” A “file” is equi valent to a “track” of an audio CD. A “group” is a bundle of f iles and is equiv alent to an “album.

11 1 .P r epar e your CD player . 1 Connect the AC po wer adaptor . 2 Connect the headphones/earphones. 3 . Play a CD. Adjust the volume by pressing VOL + or –. Press u . Playing an audio CD or A TRAC3plus/A TRAC3/MP3 files Y ou can also use house current (AC po wer adaptor, not supplied) as a po wer source.

16 Playback options Y ou can enjoy various playback options using P MODE/ (play mode/repeat), JOG DIAL/ ENTER, . / > and u . P MODE/ button If you press the button during playback, you can change the play mode.
17 Playing tracks in random order (Shuffle pla y) During playbac k, press P MODE/ repeatedly until “SHUF” appears. When playing A TRAC3plus/A TRAC3/MP3 files In shuffle mode, the CD player plays all f iles on a CD in random order .
18 Playing your favorite tracks by adding Bookmarks (Bookmark track play) Y ou can add Bookmarks to up to 99 tracks for each CD. Y ou can use this function for up to 10 CDs. While playing A TRAC3plus/A TRA C3 files Y ou can add Bookmarks to up to 999 tracks for each CD (up to 5 CDs).
19 Playing your favorite play lists (m3u play list pla y) (MP3 CD only) Y ou can play your fav orite m3u play lists.* *An “m3u play list” is a file for which an MP3 f ile playing order has been encoded. T o use the play list function, record MP3 files on a CD-R/R W using encoding software that supports the m3u format.
20 Searching for your favorite tracks/files/gr oups quickly using the JOG DIAL Selecting your favorite track or file During playback, turn the JOG DIAL to select the track or the file you want, then press ENTER. The CD player starts play . To cancel the track searc h T urn the JOG DIAL to the left until “CANCEL” appears, then press ENTER.
21 Using the radio (Continued) Using the radio Once you’ ve preset the stations, you can easily tune in the station by pressing PRESET + or – b utton. Listening to the radio Y ou can enjoy FM and AM programs. 1 Press RADIO ON•BAND to turn on the radio.
22 To improve br oadcast reception For FM, extend the headphones/earphones cord. For AM, reorient the CD player itself. Note K eep the headphones/earphones connected to the i jack of the CD player . The headphones/earphones cord works as the FM antenna.
23 Using the radio Presetting radio stations Y ou can preset up to 51 stations: 7 for TV , 4 for WB, 30 for FM and 10 for AM. 1 Press RADIO ON•BAND to turn on the radio. 2 Press RADIO ON•BAND to select the band. 3 Press MEMOR Y for 2 seconds or more.
24 To preset stations manually 1 Press RADIO ON•B AND to turn on the radio. 2 Press RADIO ON•B AND to select the band. 3 Press and hold MEMOR Y until the preset number flashes in the display . From this step on, start the next operation within 30 seconds after you finished the pre vious operation.
25 Using the radio 9k/10k switch Playing preset radio stations Y ou can tune in the station easily by pressing PRESET + or – button. 1 Press RADIO ON•BAND to select the band. 2 Press PRESET + or – to tune in a stored station. Changing the tuning interval When using the CD player abroad, change the AM tuning interval, if necessary .
26 B Available featur es The G-PROTECTION function The G-PR O TECTION function has been dev eloped to provide excellent protection against sound skipping during many acti ve uses. When you set the G-PR O TECTION switch on your CD player to “2, ” the G- PR OTECTION function will be enhanced compared to “1.
27 Emphasizing the bass sound (SOUND) Y ou can emphasize the bass-boosted sound. Press SOUND to select “B ASS ” o r “BASS .” The selected sound mode is displayed. “BASS ” enhances the bass sound more than “BASS .” Note If the sound is distorted when using the SOUND function, turn down the v olume.
28 Protecting your hearing (A VLS) The A VLS (Automatic V olume Limiter System) function keeps do wn the maximum v olume to protect your hearing. Press and hold SOUND until “A VLS ON” appear s in the display . Flashes when the volume is turned up beyond a certain level.
29 Connecting a stereo system Y ou can listen to CDs through a stereo system and record CDs on a cassette tape. F or details, see the instruction manual that comes with the connected device. Be sure to turn off all connected de vices before making connections.
30 Y ou can use the following po wer sources: • LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries •A C power adaptor F or the battery life, see “Specif ications. ” Using the dry batteries F or inserting procedure, see “Playing an audio CD or A TRAC3 plus/A TRAC3/MP3 f iles.
31 Notes on the power source Disconnect all power sources when the CD player is not used for a long time. On AC power adaptor • Use only the AC po wer adaptor supplied. If your CD player is not supplied with the one, use the A C-E45HG AC po wer adaptor .
32 Precautions On safety • Should any solid objects or liquid fall into the CD player , unplug it and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further . • Do not put any foreign objects in the DC IN 4.5 V (external power input) jack.
33 Tr oubleshooting Should any problem persist after you ha ve checked these symptoms, consult your nearest Sony dealer . CD player Symptom The volume does not increase even if you press the VOL + button repeatedly . No sound, or noise is heard. Certain files cannot be played.
34 Tr o u bleshooting CD player Symptom Playback starts from the point you stopped. (resume function) Rustling noise is heard from the CD. When using with a connected stereo system, the sound is distorted or noisy . During playback of an A TRAC CD or MP3 CD, the CD does not rotate but you can hear the sound normally .
