9 Getting Started/CD Playing a CD — Normal Play/Shuffle Play/Repeat Play This system lets you play the CD in different play modes. Track number Playing time 1 Press FUNCTION repeatedly to switch the function to CD. 2 Press PLAY MODE repeatedly in stop mode until the mode you want appears in the display.
10 Programming CD tracks — Programme Play You can make a programme of up to 25 tracks. 1 Press FUNCTION repeatedly to switch the function to CD. 2 Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “ PROGRAM ” appears. 3 Press . or > for the CD until the desired track number appears.
11 CD 5 To programme additional tracks, repeat steps 3 and 4. 6 Press CD NX (or CD N on the remote). To Do this Press x , then press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “PROGRAM” and “SHUFFLE” disappear.

15 MD – Play Perform steps 3 and 4. Press x for the MD, then press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “ PROGRAM ” and “ SHUFFLE ” disappear. Press TIME on the remote in stop mode. The total number of programmed steps appears, followed by the last programmed track number and the total playing time of the programme.
16 Note on MD track numbers On an MD, the track numbers (track sequence), track start and end point information, etc., are recorded in the TOC* 2 area independent of the sound information. You can edit recorded tracks quickly by modifying the TOC information.
17 MD – Recording Recording a CD on an MD — CD-MD Synchro Recording In addition to normal-speed recording, you can also record at high speed (approximately four times the normal speed). 1 Load a recordable MD. 2 Load a CD you want to record. 3 Press CD SYNC NORMAL.
18 Recording on an MD manually — Manual Recording You can record just the portions you like from a CD or a radio programme. 1 Load a recordable MD. 2 Press FUNCTION repeatedly to select the desired source to record. 3 Press REC/REC IT (or MD z REC on the remote).

20 Recording tips Recording for long times This system has two long time recording modes: LP2 and LP4 (MDLP recording). When recording in LP2 Stereo mode, you can record 2 times the normal recordable time, and in LP4 Stereo mode, you can record 4 times the normal recordable time.
21 MD – Recording Marking track numbers • Automatically during recording Track numbers are automatically marked as on the original source during recording from this system ’ s CD player or components connected to the DIGITAL OPTICAL IN jack.
22 Making a space between tracks 3 seconds long — Smart Space The Smart Space function lets you make the blank spaces between tracks 3 seconds long automatically while making a digital recording from a CD.
23 MD – Recording Turn on the Smart Space function S.Space On (factory setting) Turn off the Smart Space function S.Space Off 5 Press MENU/NO on the remote.
24 Before you start editing Before editing You can edit an MD only when: • The MD is recordable. • The MD play mode is normal play. Check the following, before editing.

26 Labelling an MD (continued) Checking the titles To check the disc titles, press SCROLL on the remote in stop mode. To check the track title, press SCROLL on the remote during play. The title appears scrolling in the display. To stop scrolling, press SCROLL on the remote.
27 MD – Editing Erasing recordings — Erase Function The MD deck lets you erase unwanted tracks quickly and easily. The three options for erasing recordings are: • Erasing a single track. (Track Erase) • Erasing all tracks. (All Erase) • Erasing a portion of a track.
28 6 While monitoring the sound, press . or > for the MD to find the starting point of the portion to be erased (point A). You can shift the starting point by 1/86 second (1 frame) intervals. To shift the point by second or minute intervals, press and hold m or M (or press m or M on the remote) so that second or minute flashes, then press .
29 MD – Editing Moving recorded tracks — Move Function You can use this function to change the order of any track on the disc. When you move tracks, the tracks are automatically renumbered.

31 MD – Editing 4 Press . or > for the MD until the first track number of the two to be combined appears, then press ENTER/ YES on the remote. 5 Press . or > for the MD until the second track number of the two to be combined appears. 6 Press ENTER/YES on the remote.
32 6 Press . or > for the MD to change the recorded level. The recording level can be changed from – 12 dB to +12 dB, in 2 dB steps. While monitoring the sound, change to the optimum level while making sure that “ OVER ” does not appear in the display at the loudest portion.
33 MD – Editing Fade-in and Fade-out Recording 1 Press FUNCTION repeatedly to switch the function to MD. 2 Press MENU/NO on the remote to display “ Edit Menu ” . 3 Press . or > for the MD until “ S.F Edit? ” appears, then press ENTER/YES on the remote.
34 Tuner Presetting radio stations You can preset 20 stations for FM and 10 stations for AM. 1 Press TUNER/BAND repeatedly to select “FM” or “AM”. Pressing TUNER/BAND turns on the system. 2 Press TUNING MODE repeatedly until “AUTO” appears.
35 Tuner Listening to the radio — Preset Tuning Preset radio stations in the tuner’s memory first (see “Presetting radio stations” on page 34). 1 Press TUNER/BAND repeatedly to select “ FM ” or “ AM ” . 2 Press TUNING MODE repeatedly until “ PRESET ” appears.
36 Labelling the preset stations — Station Name You can label each preset station with up to 10 characters (Station Name). 1 Tune the desired station you want to label (see “ Listening to the radio ” on page 35). 2 Follow the same procedures as from step 2 to 6 of “ Labelling a CD ” on page 12.
37 Tuner/Sound Adjustment/Timer Falling asleep to music — Sleep Timer You can set the system to turn off after a certain time, so that you can fall asleep to music.
38 7 Press . or > on the remote to select the desired sound source. The indication changes as follows: t TUNER y MD PLA Y T t CD PLA Y T 8 Press ENTER/YES on the remote. The start time, the stop time, and the sound source and volume appear in turn, before the original display returns.
39 Timer 7 Press . or > on the remote to select the desired day. If you select “DAILY?” in step 5, proceed to step 9. 8 Press ENTER/YES on the remote. The hour indication flashes. 9 Set the time to start recording. Press . or > on the remote to set the hour, then press ENTER/YES on the remote.
40 Check the timer Select the timer number (REC 1 to 3) in step 2 above, then press ENTER/YES on the remote. Change the setting Start over from step 1.

43 Additional Information System limitations of MDs The recording system in your MD deck has the limitations described below. Note, however, that these limitations are due to the inherent nature of the MD recording system itself, not to mechanical causes.
44 T roubleshooting If you have any problem using this system, use the following checklist. First, check that the mains lead is connected firmly and that the speakers are connected correctly and firmly. Should any problem persist, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
45 Additional Information The sound skips. • Wipe the CD clean (see page 42). • Replace the CD. • Try moving the system to a place without vibration (e.g., on top of a stable stand). • Try moving the speakers away from the system, or placing them on separate stands.
46 Play does not start from the first track. • Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until “ PROGRAM ” or “ SHUFFLE ” disappears to return to normal play. “— OVER —” appears. • Press and hold m for the MD or press . for the MD to return to the desired playing position.
47 Additional Information If the system still does not operate properly after performing the above measures, reset the system as follows: With the system turned on, press VOLUME – and REC MODE at the same time while keeping pressing x for the MD. “ COLD RESET ” appears, and the system turns off.
48 Messages One of the following messages may appear or flash in the display during operation. MD Auto Cut The MD deck is pausing the recording because silence continued for 30 seconds or more during recording. Blank Disc The inserted recordable MD is new, or all tracks on the MD have been erased.
49 Additional Information Incomplete! The S.F Edit (changing the recording level after recording, Fade-in, Fade-out) operation was not performed properly because the deck was moved while recording was in progress or the MD is damaged or dirty. Initialize (flashing) The Setup Menu settings have been lost.
50 CD Check and CD Position appear alternately The disc could not be read properly. Complete! CD editing (Disc Memo) finished normally.
