Chapter 2 9 CMOS Setup Utility CMOS setup is a hardware configurat ion program built into the system ROM, called the complementary met al- oxide semiconductor (CMOS) Setup Utility . Since mo st systems are already prope rly configured and optimized, there is no need to run this util ity .

Note: Remember to disable the Spread S pectrum feature if you are overclocking. A slight jitter can introduce a temporary boost in clock speed causing the overclock ed processor to lock up.

Chapter 4 49 This chapter provides instructions on how to troubleshoot system hardw are problems. Hardware Diagnostic Procedure IMPORT AN T : The diagnostic tests described in this chapter ar e o nly intended to test Acer p roducts. Non-Acer products, prototype cards, or modified opti ons can give false errors an d invalid system responses.
50 Chapter 4 System Check Procedures Power System Check If the system will power on, skip this sect ion. Refer to System Extern al Inspection. If the system will not power on, do the fol lowing: q Check if the power cable is properly connected to the system and AC source.
Chapter 4 51 Checkpoints A checkpoint is either a byte or word value output to I/O port 80h. The BIOS outputs checkpoint s througho ut bootblock and Power-On Self T e st (POST) to indicate t he task the system is currently executing.
52 Chapter 4 Bootblock Recover y Code Checkpoints The Bootblock recovery code gets control when the BIOS determines that a BIOS recovery needs to occur because the user has forced the upda te or the BIOS checksum is corrupt . Refer to “BIOS Recovery” on page 25 for more information about perfo rming a BIOS recovery .
Chapter 4 53 POST Code Checkpoints The POST code checkpoints are the largest set of checkpoints during the BIOS preboot process. The following table describes the type of checkpoints th at may occur during the PO ST po rtion of the BIOS. Chapter 4 55 DIM Code Checkpoints The Device Initialization Manager (DIM) gets control at va rious times during BIO S POST to initiali ze different system busses. The following table describes the ma in checkpo ints where the DIM module is accessed. NOTE: Checkpoints may dif fer between different platforms based on system configur ation.
56 Chapter 4 Beep Codes Beep codes are used by the BIOS to indicate a seriou s or fatal error to the end user . Beep codes are used when an error occurs before the system video ha s b een initialized. Beep c odes will be generated by the system board speaker , commonly refe rred to as the PC speaker .

This message is ty pically displayed when the BIOS is trying to detect and configure IDE/A T API devices in POST .
60 Chapter 4 Virus Related 3rd Slave Drive - A T API Incompatible The IDE/A T API device configured as Slave in the 3rd IDE controller fai led an A T API compatibility test. This mess age is typically displayed when the BIOS is trying to detect and configure IDE/A T API de vices in POST .
