5 H ARDWARE D ESCRIPTION The Wireless PCI Adapter suppo r ts up to 54 Mbps connections . This card is fully co mpliant with the specific ations defined in IEEE 802.11g standard . It is designed to complement PCI Local Bus computers and sup por ts Windo ws 98SE/Me/2000/ XP .
H ARDWARE I NSTALL ATION 6 H ARDWARE I NSTALLATION Wa r n i n g : • This n etwork adapter req uires a PC and BIOS that supports the PCI Local Bus Specification v2.2 or lat er. If you are installing in an olde r computer model, upgrade the BIO S to the latest version.

14 U TILITY C ONFIGURATION Using the SMCWPCI-G Utility Program Once the installation is complete , the configuration utility can be accessed fr om the Star t menu, or you can access it through the quick laun ch icon on the desktop .

U SING THE SMCWPCI-G U TILITY P ROGRAM 23 estab lish an ad hoc net work, mak e sure the Channel is se t to the same radio ch annel as that used b y the other wireless clients in yo ur group . Howe v er , if you ar e connecting to a netw ork via an access point, the adapter will autom atically use the same channel as that used b y the access po int.

N ETW ORK T OPOLOGIES 28 Infrastructure Wireless LAN The SMCWPCI-G also provides wireless workstations with access to a wired LAN. An int egrated wired and wireless LAN is called an Infrastr ucture c onfigur ation. A Basic Ser vice Set (BSS) consists of a g roup of wireless PC users and an access point that is directly connected to th e wire d LAN.
