H ARDWARE D ESCRIPTION 5 Remote LAN Wakeup Remote LAN W akeup capability is a key feature of a centrally manag ed PC environment. This technology enables networked PCs to be “w oken up” from a sleep or powered-off s t ate so they can be managed from a central location, at any time of the day or night.

H ARDWARE I NSTALLATION 7 Hardware Installation Network cards are sensiti ve to static electr icity. To protect the card, avoid touching its electrical components and always touch the metal chassis of your computer before handling the card. 1. Switch off the computer , unplug the pow er cord, and remov e the computer’ s cover .
I NSTALLATION 8 4. Attach the W ake-On-LAN cable (optional). If you require W ake-On-LAN capability from a pow ered-off state, attach one end of the 3-pin W ake-On-LAN cable to the connector on the top edg e of the card, and the other end to the “5 V Standb y” connector on the computer’ s motherboard.
D RIVER I NSTALLATION 9 Driver Installation T h e SMC C D - R OM that a c co m p ani e s the PCI card c ontains all the netwo rk operating system drivers s upported by this card. Please read the “RELEASE.TXT” file on the CD for a list of all driv ers.

D RIVER I NSTALLATION 11 4. Insert the attached CD-ROM into your CD driv e, and type E: (assuming E: is the location of y our CD driv e), click “Browse . ” 5. On the CD-ROM, go to the “Driv er” folder and choose the folder for your operating system.
I NSTALLATION 12 6. Click “OK” to install the driver . 7. A ‘Digital Signature Not F ound” screen will warn you that the software does not contain a Microsoft digital signature and ask you if you wish to contin ue the installation. Click “Y es”.

WiNeT ool provides netw ork adapter infor mation, g enerates specified packets , captures pack ets, and analyses network traffic .
14 3. Click “Next” 4. Click “Y es” to ag ree to the lic ense statement. An information screen will open showing the minimum system requirements needed to r un the EtherGuard program.
15 5. If your syste m meets the requirem ents , click “Next”. 6. On the “Choose Destination Location” screen, clic k “Browse” to install the prog ram files into a folder other than the default, or click “Next” to install to the de fault folder shown on the screen.
I NSTALLATION 16 7. Choose the location where the prog ram icons will be located and click “Next”. 8. Check the “T o launch EtherGuard” box and cl ick “Finish” to complete the installation and launch the EtherGuard prog ram. The EtherGuard prog ram may also be started by clic king “Start/ Prog rams/EtherGuard/Etherguard”.
S OFTWARE I NSTALLATION 17 EtherGuard EtherGuard monitors both outg oing and incoming data to protect y our children, y our employees , and yourself against network and Internet intr usions . 1. The prog ram opens with the EtherGuard “W elcome” screen.
I NSTALLATION 18 4. Click “Modify P assword”. 5. The default EtherGuard password setting is blank (no passw ord required) so enter your passw ord in the “New P assword” field and then again in the ‘Confir m Passw ord” field. Cli ck “OK”.

S OFTWARE I NSTALLATION 23 WiNeTool WiNeT ool provides netw ork adapter infor mation, g enerates specified packets , captures packets , and analyzes network traffic . WiNeT ool also generates wake-up packets . After installation the prog ram will place an icon in the toolbar .
I NSTALLATION 24 Configuration The WiNeT ool opens with the “Configuration” page. Here y ou may view the cur rent configuration for this adapter. If required, click “Help” for access to the HTML help files . Configuration TX/RX Information MAC Address The Media Access Co ntrol Address of this adapter.
S OFTWARE I NSTALLATION 25 Send Packet Sends fixed length packets in the default pattern at one of two speeds , Nor mal mode or Tu rbo mode. The value of packets/sec depends on the computer perfor mance. H: M: S: Indicates hours, minutes, seconds of time the WiNeTool has b een sending packets.
I NSTALLATION 26 Packet Generator The “Pac ket Generator” allows y ou to send packets with a defined mode, length, and pattern. The Ar row icons allow you to navig ate forward and backward through the pages.
S OFTWARE I NSTALLATION 27 Send ACPI Packet Sends an A CPI (Advanced Configuration and P ow er Interface) packet to wak e up a sleeping computer . Magic Packet Input the MAC address of the sl eeping computer you wish to wake up and click “S end’. Click “Clear” to cle ar the box and input a new figu re.

Stop St ops the capture function . Stop & View Stops the capture func tion and opens the “Analysis Packet” screen .
I NSTALLATION 30 Filter Setting - MAC Address Sets the MA C address of computers (sta tions) as filtering criteria. Y ou must enter a 12 cha racter MA C address in the Station 1 and Station 2 fields (or enter “any”). Click on the arrow symbols in the direction column to set the direction of the pack et flow to be captured.
S OFTWARE I NSTALLATION 31 Filter Setting - IP Address Sets the IP address of computers (st ations) as filtering criter ia. Enter an IP address in the Station 1 and Station 2 fields (o r enter “any”). Click on the ar row symbols in the direction column to set the direction of the packet flow to be captured.
I NSTALLATION 32 Filter Setting - Pattern Sets the pattern and position as filtering criteria. Note: Note: in the abo ve example, “11 22 33 44 55 66 99 DD” is at byte position 0x23. Therefore, WiNeT ool will only capture a packet with th e same patter n (11 22 33 4 4 55 66 99 DD) in the same position.
S OFTWARE I NSTALLATION 33 Packet Analysis The packet Analysis screen features three windows: The top window giv es basic infor mation on captured packets , including which layer the packets belong to . The center window shows detailed data on each layer .
I NSTALLATION 34 Receive Packet - Detail The “Detail” pag e provides detailed network information and shows the packet size distributuion, i.e, n umber of Bytes with a size up to 64 Bytes , number of Bytes with a size of 65 to 127 Bytes , etc.
35 T ROUBLESHOOTING PCI Compatibility Early PCI BIOS ve rsions do not properly suppor t the PCI specifications and ma y “hang” when a netw ork card dri ver tries to load. If this occurs, make sure y our BIOS cor rectly suppor ts the PCI Local Bus Specifications (v2.
T R OUBLESHOOTING 36 the network card is installed. Ensure that the slot is configured for level-triggered interrupts instead of edge-triggered interrupts.
S OLUTIONS FOR C OMMON P RO B LE MS 37 Solutions for Common Problems Problems are often caused b y cabling er rors, conflicts with other devices installed in the same computer , or software that has been configured incorrectly . If you e ncounter a problem with the network card, use the following checklists to identify and c or rect the problem.
T R OUBLESHOOTING 38 Network Connection Problems There may be a network connection problem if the LED on the card’ s brack e t does not light, or if you cannot access any netw ork resources from the computer . Check the following items before contacting SMC T e chnical Support.
39 C ABLE S PECIFICATIONS Cable and Specifications Twisted-Pair Cable and Pin Assignments Do NOT plug a phone jac k connector into any RJ-45 port. Use only twisted-pair cables with RJ-45 connectors that conform with FCC standards . F or 10BASE-T/100B ASE-TX connections , a twisted-pair cable must have two pairs of wires.
C ABLE S PECIFICATIONS 40 The figure below illustrates how the pins on the RJ-45 connector are numbered. Be sure to hold the connectors in the same orientation when attaching the wir e s to the pins .
