2 The Shindaiwa H4 series of hand-held power equipment is designed and built to deliver superior performance and reliability without compromise to quality , comfort, safety or durability .
3 AL W A YS inspect unit before each use. Replace any damaged parts. NEVER run the engine when trans- porting the unit. NEVER run the engine indoors! Make sure there is always good ventila- tion. Fumes from engine exhaust can cause serious injury or death.
4 Be Aware of the Wor king En vironment Avoid long-term operation in very hot or very cold weather . Make sure bystanders or observers outside the 15 meter (50 feet) “danger zone” wear eye protection. Be extremely careful of slippery terrain, especially during rainy weather .
5 Product Description Using the illustration as a guide, familiarize yourself with your machine and its various com- ponents. Understanding your machine helps ensure top perfor- mance, long service life and safer operation. WARNING! Do not make unauthorized modications or alterations to any of these units or their components.
6 Assembly Prior to Assembly Before assembling, make sure you have all the components required for a complete unit and inspect unit and components for any damage.
7 NOTE: The plastic shield is for use with the Nylon Line Head only . Install Metal Shield when using plastic or metal blades. 1. Remove plastic threaded shaft sleeve and adapter plate (C) from PTO shaft (A). 2. Place the shield on the bottom of the bearing housing ange.
8 4-6 mm (3/16”-1/4”) Throttle Free Play Remove air cleaner cover Assembly (continued) Adjust throttle trigger free play The throttle trigger free play should be approximately 4 - 6 mm (3/16” - 1/4”). Make sure that the throttle lever operates smoothly without binding.
9 The unit should now be completel y assembled and ready for use with a blade. IMPORT ANT! Discard blades that are bent, warped, cracked, broken or damaged in any way . Use a sharp blade. A dull blade is more likely to snag and thrust. C J I F d. Remove three screws holding shield plate (E) and plastic shield (C) to gear housing.
10 W ARNING! Alternative fuels, such as E15 (15% ethanol), E-85 (85% ethanol) or any fuels not meeting Shindaiwa requirements are NOT approved for use in Shindaiwa gasoline engines.
11 NEVER ■ smoke or light res near the engine. AL W A YS ■ stop the engine and allow it to cool before refueling. A LWA Y S ■ Wipe all spill ed fu el an d mov e at least 3 me ters (10 f eet) from the fuel ing p oint and s ource befo re starting.
12 Make sure the attachment is clear of obstructions! ...and pull recoil starter handle upward Hold the unit rmly ... Open After engine starts, move choke to OPEN position Close choke Set the choke.
13 After the engine starts, allow the ■ engine to warm up at idle 2 or 3 minutes before operating the unit. W hen the Engine Star ts... After the engine is warm, pick up ■ the unit and clip on the shoulder strap, if so equipped.
14 Y our Shindaiwa unit may be equipped with one of several Shindaiwa trimmer head models, each with features for specic applications and/or operational requirements. Cutting gr ass with a trimmer head T rimmer head styles: Semi-automatic . T rimmer line is indexed when the operator taps the trimmer head on the ground during operation.
15 D O N O T C U T Using a blade Blade T hrust “Blade thrust” is a sudden sideways or backward motion of the brushcutter . Such motion may occur when the blade jams or catches on an object such as a sapling tree or tree stump.
16 Prior to each work day , perform the following: Remove all dirt and debris from the ■ engine, check the cooling ns and air cleaner for clogging, and clean as necessary . Carefully remove any accumulations ■ of dirt or debris from the mufer and fuel tank.
17 Remove and inspect the pre-lter . 2. If the pre-lter is torn or otherwise damaged, replace it with a new one. Clean the pre-lter with soap and 3. water . Let dry before reinstalling. Inspect the air lter element. If the 4. element is damaged or distorted, replace it with a new one.
18 Combustion chamber should be decarbonized, and the valve clearance should be adjusted. It is highly recommended ■ that this is done by a Shindaiwa-trained service technician.

20 WARNING! Sharpen only the cutting teeth of a blade. DO NOT alter the contour of the blade in any way . WARNING! Wear protective gloves when handling or performing main- tenance on the blade. Round File When the cutting edges of the blade become dull, they can be resharpened with a few strokes of a le.
21 Long T er m Stor age Remove the spark plug and pour about 1/4 ounce of 2-cycle mixing oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. ■ Slowly pull the recoil starter 2 or 3 times so oil will evenly coat the interior of the engine. Reinstall the spark plug.
