1 Produ ct Overvie w Features and Benefit s Avocent DSR ® switches combine analog and digital tech nology to prov ide flexible, centralized control of data center servers and virtual media, and to facilitate the OA&M (operations, activation and maintenance) of remote branch offices wh er e trained operators may be unavailable.
2 DSR S witch Installer/User Gu ide The serial IQ mo dule is a DCE device that provides the primary interface between a serial device and a DSR s witch. It provides VT100 terminal emulat ion, break suppres s ion and port his tory in a compact, conven ient module.

5 CHAPTER 2 Installation DSR Switch Connectivity A DSR sw itching system t ransmits keybo ard, video and mou se (KVM) informati on between operators and target dev i ces attached to th e s witc h over a network using either an Ethern et or modem connectio n.
6 DSR S witch Installer/User Gu ide Figure 2.1 illustrat es a bas ic configuration for the DSR switch, using th e DSR8035 model for the example. Descriptions follow in Table 2.
Chapter 2: Installation 7 Getting st arted Before installin g your DSR switch, refer to the foll owing lists to ensure you hav e all items that shipped with the DSR switch, as w ell as other items necessary for prop er installation.

Plug your VGA monitor and either PS/2 or , if your DSR switch model supports USB , USB keyboard an d mouse cables into the appropriately la beled ports.
Chapter 2: In stallation 11 NOTE: The serial IQ module is a DCE device and only s upports VT100 terminal emulation. 3. Connect the power supply to t he po wer conn ector on your serial IQ module. The cab le expander can be used to power up to four serial IQ modules from a single power supply .
12 DSR Switc h Installer/User Guide In a typi cal conf iguration, as shown in Figure 2.3, the user’s computer is located outside of the firewall, and the DSR sw itch resides inside the f irew all.

15 CHAPTER 3 Local Port Operat ion Most DSR switch models include a local port on the back. This port en ables you to connect a keyboard, monitor and mouse to the switch fo r direct access. The DSR switches include the OSCAR graphical user interface f or configuring yo ur syst em and selecting targ et devices.

B y default, the DSR s witch sends the US keyboard count ry code to Sun and USB modu les attached to target devices, and the co de is applied to the target d evices when they are powere d u p or rebooted.

Chapter 3: Local Po rt Operati on 33 When the DSR switch discovers a cascaded switch, the numbering format change s from a DSR po rt only to [DSR port]-[ s witch port] to accom mod ate each target device und er that switch. For example, if a s witch is connected to DSR por t 6, each target device connected to it wou ld be numbered s equentially.

43 CHAPTER 4 W eb Interf ace Ope rations Overview of the DSR Switch On-Board W eb Interface In addition to t he OSCAR on-screen interface, DSR switches equipp ed with the on-board web interface feature provid e a built in interface to handle all basic KVM switching needs.

The appliance per forms two different types of queries. Query Mode (Appliance) is used to authenticate administrators and users attempting to acces s the appliance itself.

Resetting causes a simulation of a mouse and keyboard reconnect as if you had d i sconnected and r econnected them. 81 CHAPTER 6 T erminal Operations The Console Menu Each DSR switch may be configured at the appl iance level through the Console menu interface accessed throug h the SETUP, CONSOLE or 10101 port. All terminal commands are accessed throug h a terminal or PC running term inal emulation so ftware.

85 Append ices Appendix A: Flash Upgrades The DSR switch Flash u pgrade feature allows yo u to update your ap pliance with the latest firmware av ai lab le. This up date can be performed u sing the DSView 3 sof t war e, using a Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server or using the on-board web i nterface.
