8 1 FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N Overv iew FRITZ!WLA N USB Stick N is a WLAN adapter for the Universal Serial Bus (USB). With the FRI TZ!WL AN USB S tick N , you can co nnect your computer d i- rectly with a WLAN acces s point , for example, with an AVM FRITZ!Box WLAN .

13 As soon a s you c onnect the F RITZ!WL AN USB Stic k N to your c omputer, the security settings of your WLAN are im- plem ent ed in the F RITZ! WLAN c ont ro l softw are a nd then deleted from the Stick. The AVM Stick & Surf logo appears and a WLAN connection to your FRITZ!Bo x is estab lished automatically.
14 3 I nstallat io n Installing F RITZ!WLAN USB Stick N The FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N can be installed in the operating systems Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit edi tion), Windows Vista (32-bi t or 64-bi t editio n) and W indow s XP (32-b it or 64 -bit edit ion).
15 5. Then click “Y es” (Wi ndows 7) or “C ontinue” (Windows Vista) in the “Us er Account Control” dia- log. The dr iv ers a nd the c ont ro l softw are f or the FRITZ! WLAN USB Stick N will be installed n ow. If you are prom pted to do so, i nsert the FRITZ!WLA N USB Stick N CD an d foll ow the ins truc- tions on the sc reen.
16 6. In the “Found New Hardw are” window , select “Locat e and install driver software (rec ommended)”. If Windows reports that the progr am may not have been installed correctly , cli ck “The Program was in- stalled correctly.” or “Cancel”.
17 If an additional Windows dialog ask s if you want to install soft ware not di gitally signed by Microsoft, click “C ontinue Anyway”. Thi s request depend s on the dr iver signature options set on your computer. A progres s bar indicat es the progress and the conclu- sion of th e instal lation.
18 6. A message appears: “The Wiz ard has finished inst all- ing the software for this device ”. Conclude the instal- lat ion by cl ickin g “Finis h”. Thi s c omplet es the driv er i nsta ll ation fo r the FRITZ! WLAN USB Stick N. C ontinue readi ng in the next sec- tion, “Info rm ation o n WLAN Connections”.
19 4 The FRITZ!WLAN C ontrol Softw are Establis hing and C learin g WLAN C onnec tions With the FR ITZ!WL AN USB Stick N you can establish wireless ne twor k connections (WLANs) with various WLAN devices. The FRITZ!WLAN co n- trol software is av ailable to manage al l these WLAN connections.

21 4.2 Estab lishing a WLAN C o nnection With FRITZ! WLAN you can establish WL AN connectio ns to WLAN remo te sites (access points), which c an provid e ac- cess to DSL, to prin ters, to mobile telepho nes, PDA s, and even to other WLAN cli ents. Direct connections are also possible to oth er FRITZ!WL AN USB S ticks.

23 2. Enter the W LAN k ey in the “WLA N k ey” field. All other WL AN parties o f the ad-hoc connection must also enter this k ey. See also the encr yption instructions in the section “Encryption” from page 33. C onfirm the settings configur ed earlier for the ad -hoc network.

26 Enteri ng the networ k k ey 3. Enter the n etwork k ey of the WLAN ac ces s poin t in the “Security k ey” field. Click the “OK” button . On the A VM FRITZ!Bo x family produc ts the netw ork key is pri nted on the und erside of the de vice. The W LAN connecti on is established.
27 Esta blishing a WLAN C onnection (Window s Vis ta) T o establish a WL AN connection i n Windows Vista using Microso ft WLAN Servic e (“automati c WLAN con figur a- tion”), work through the fol lowing step s: 1. Click th e Microso ft WLAN icon in th e noti fication area of the task bar and select the option “Connect to a netwo rk”.
28 3. Enter the WLA N key of the se lect ed WLAN a cc ess point i n the “Sec urity key or pass phr ase” field and click “C onn ect”. On the A VM FRITZ!Bo x family produc ts the netw ork key is pri nted on the und erside of the de vice. The W LAN connecti on is established.

30 6M o r e a b o u t W L A N AV M a n d W L A N WLAN (Wireless Loc al Area Network) is a radio technology that allows net works an d access t o the In ternet to be pr ovided wi thou t cable con- nectio ns. This allows m ultiple users to share o ne wireless Intern et con- nect ion .
31 Range Th e range within a WLAN is hig hly depend ent on the fol- lowing t hree factors: • the WLAN adapter used, • the structural c ondition s, and • the amou nt of rad io tr affic on the s ame fr equency band .
32 The S tandard f or Securi ty IEEE 802.1 1i The WP A2 secu rity me chani sm i s def ined in th e IEEE 802.11 i stan dard . WP A2 is an exten sion of the f amil- iar security mech anism WP A (Wi-Fi Protected Acc ess). The main fea t ure of t he extension of WP A to WP A2 is t he AES-C CM encryption proc ess.
33 Encr yption The most important sec urity sett ing is enc ryption. Th e FRITZ !WLAN US B Stic k N su pports t he secu rity mec ha- nis ms WEP ( Wire d Equ iv alent Priv acy), WP A (W i-Fi Pro tect - ed Access) and WP A 2 as f ollows : • As part of the W EP mechanism a st atic key i s deter- mined to serve for the encrypti on of the user data.
34 6.3 Frequency Range WLAN uses the frequency range around 2.4 GH z in the ISM band or, alternatively , t he frequency range at 5 GH z. The frequenc y range used in your WL AN depen ds on the settings of your WLAN acc ess point.

39 8 T roubleshootin g He lp fo r E rrors This cha pter prov ides ass is tan ce if you a re h avi ng pr oble ms wi th the WLAN connecti on, or if you want to change the I P settings on your com- puter.

Unin stalling the WLAN Ada pter So ftware The AVM FRITZ!WLAN s oftware is installed , but every ti me Windows 7 /Vista/XP is restar ted, the M icrosoft WLAN control is applied , no matter wh ich settin gs were config- ured be fore .
41 Inst alling t he Lates t Service P acks The FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N is detected automa tically in the W indow s XP op eratin g sys tem. How ever , the devic e is not fully functional . Possib le Cause The necess ar y service packs have not been installed.
42 8.2 WLAN C onnection Is Not Es tabli shed Make sure that the setti ngs in the W LAN acc es s point and in th e FRITZ!WL AN control soft ware agree with t he entries in th e following table.
43 C hecking the Da ta of the WLAN C onnection C ould not reg ister at the WLA N remote site. C hanging the Posi tion of the WLAN Devices No WLAN remo te sites are found. Possib le Cause The settings of the WLAN remo te si te and the entries in the “WLAN Remote S ite” area of the FRITZ !WLAN control softw ar e do no t mat ch.
44 Installing the Patch for WPA2 with Micro soft WL AN Service The co nne ction to an access po int can not b e esta blished using the Microsoft WLAN Ser vice (WZ C) in Windows XP with Se rvice Pack 2 .
45 Allowing Network Acc ess T wo o r more comp uters are net work ed via FRITZ!WLAN USB S tick N, but you cannot access files and connected devices on the remote site. Checking the Netw ork Data Y ou comp uter reco gnizes the netwo rk and the router , but cannot access th e Inte rnet o r the net work (l imit ed con- nectivity).
46 C hecking the Da ta of the Ad-hoc C onnection The FR ITZ! WLAN US B Stick N and a furth er WL AN adap ter are connected directly via WLAN, but c annot exchange any d ata wit h each othe r. Switc hing the WLA N Chann el An undefined malfunction occurs.
47 Avoiding WLAN Ch annels with DF S The FR ITZ!WL AN US B Stick N loses the WL AN connecti on in the 5- GHz frequency ban d for no apparen t reason. 8.4 Chec king the IP Setting s A WLAN acc ess point, f or instance, a FRI TZ!Box WLAN, has its own DHCP server, which assigns IP addresses to the co nnecte d co mpute rs.

49 Obtaining a n IP Address Automat ically in Windows Vista Proceed as follows in Windows Vista: 1. Click the “Sta rt” button in th e task bar and se lect “C ontro l Panel / Network and I nternet / Vi ew Network Status and T asks”. 2. From the “T asks”, select “Manage netw ork connec- tions”.
50 6. Confirm your selectio n by clicking “OK”. If necess ar y , repeat steps 4 through 6 for the “Inter- net P rotocol Version 6 (TCP/I Pv6 )” as w ell.
