4 This chapter provides ba sic information fo r using the unit. USING THE MANU AL The operation manual contains explanations of how to ope rate the unit, impo rtant considerations, and mainten ance procedures. To get the most out of the unit, please read the operati on manual.

6 OPERA T ION P ANEL Exposure mode selecto r key and indicator s Use to sequentially sele ct the exposure modes: AUTO, MANUAL or PHOTO. Selected mode is shown by a lit indicator. (p.15) Light and dark keys and indicator s Use to adjust the MANUAL or PHOTO exposure level.
7 2 Follow the ste ps below to load paper into the tray. PA P E R For best results, use only paper recommended by SHARP. * Do not use non-standard envelopes, and envel ope s that have metal clasps, plas tic snappers, string cl osures, windows, lining s, self-adhesive, patches or synthetic materials.
8 LO ADING THE P A PER TRA Y 1 Raise the hand le of the paper tray and pull the paper tray out until it stops. 2 Adjust the paper guide s on the paper tray to the copy pa per width and length. Squeeze the lever of paper guide and slide the guide to match wit h the width of the pap er.
9 2 4 Gently push the paper tray back in to the unit. • After loading paper, to ca ncel t he blinking without restarting copying, press the clear ( ) key. The in the display will go out and the start ( ) indicator will light up. • Be sure that paper is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled o r bent edges.
10 BYP ASS FEED (inc luding special paper) The single bypass can be used to feed standard paper, transparen cy film, labels, envelopes, and oth er special purpose pape r. Paper measuring from A6 to A4 a nd in the weight range of 52 g /m 2 to 128 g /m 2 can be used in thi s tray.
11 3 This chapter explains basic and other copying functions. The unit is equ ipped with a o ne-page memory buffe r. This memory all ows the unit to scan an original once only and make up to 99 copies.
12 CONNECTING THE PO WER CORD 1 Ensure that th e power switch of the unit is in th e OFF position. Insert the attac hed power cord into the pow er cord socket at the rear of the unit. 2 Plug the other end of the po wer cord into t he nearest outlet . Power on Ensure that the power switch of the unit is in the OFF position.
13 3 About the scan he ad The scan head lamp remains on constantly when the unit i s in the ready co ndition (when the start ( ) indicator is illuminated). The unit adju sts the scan head lamp peri odically to main tain copying qua lity. At this time, the scan head moves automati cally.
14 ORIGINAL PLA CEMEN T 1 Open the o riginal cove r, and place the original . 2 Place an orig inal face down on the original table . Align it with the original scale and the centring ( ) mark. Gently close the original cover. Setting a large original The original cover can be removed to allow copying of bulky objects.
15 3 SET THE COPY QU ANTITY Set the number of copies us ing the two cop y quantity ( , ) keys when copying from the original table. • Press the right copy q uantity key to set the unit digit from 0 to 9. This key will not change the tens dig it. • Press the left cop y quantity key to set the tens digit from 1 to 9.
16 Automatic exposure adjustment The automatic exposure level can b e adjusted to suit your copying needs. This level is set for copyi ng from the original table. 1 Press the expo sure mode selector key to select the PHOTO ( ) mode. 2 Press and hold down th e exposure mode selector key for approximatel y 5 seconds.
17 3 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM Three preset reduction ratios and two enlar gement ratios can be selected. The zoom function enables copy ratio selection from 25% to 400% in 1% increments. 1 Set the origina l and check the paper size. 2 Use the copy ratio selector key and/or ZOOM ( , ) keys to select the desi red copy ratio.
18 This chapter describes the special functi ons of this unit. Use these functions as needed. DESCRIPTION OF SPECIAL FUNCTIONS Toner save mode (page 18) Reduces toner consumption by approximately 10%. Power save modes (p age 19) The unit has two power save modes of operation: prehea t mode and auto power shut-off mode.
19 4 2 Press and hold down the exposure mode selector key for approximately 5 seconds. The MANUAL ( ) indicator will go out and the PHOTO ( ) indicator will begin to blink. The light and dark indicator marked "5" will light up, indicating the standard toner mode is active.
20 * Factory default settings are indicated with an asterisk (*). 5 Press the start ( ) key. The right-hand numbe r in the display will be steadily lit and the entered value will be s tored. 6 Press the light ( ) or dark ( ) key to re turn to the normal copy mode.
21 5 This chapter describes how to replace th e toner cartridge and how to clean unit. T ONER CARTRI DGE REPLA CEMENT When the toner cartridge repla cement requ ired ( ) indicator lights up, replacement of the toner cartridge will be needed soon. Obtain a new cartridge.
22 3 Gently pull the toner c artridge out while pressing the lock release lever. 4 Remove the toner cart ridge from the bag. Grasp the cartr idge on both sides and shake it horizontally four or fiv e times. After shaking the cartri dge, remove the toner sea l.
23 5 6 Close the front cover a nd then the side cove r by pressing the round projections n ear the side cover open button. The indicator will go out and the start ( ) indicator w ill light up. T ONER CARTRIDGE LIFE To find out the approximate quanti ty of toner remaining, foll ow the procedure described bel ow.
24 CLEANING THE UNIT Proper care is esse ntial in order to get cl ea n, sharp copies. Be sure to take a few minutes to regularly clean the unit. Cabinet Wipe the cabinet with a soft, clean cloth. Original table and the back side of the original cover Stains on the glass or cove r will also be copied.
25 5 Transfer charger If copies start becoming streaky or blotchy, the transfer charger may be dirty. Clean the charger using the following procedure. 1 Turn the power switch off. (p.13) 2 Open the side cover whi le pressing the side cover open button.
26 This chapter describes misfeed removal and tro ubleshooting. TR OUBLESHOO TING If any problem occurs, check the list below before contacting yo ur authori sed service representative. 27 6 ST A TUS INDICA T ORS When the followin g indicators light up or blink on the operation panel o r the following alphanumeric codes a ppear in the d isplay, solve the pro blem immediately referri ng to both the table below and the relevant page. Be sure to use only genuine SHARP parts and supplies.
28 MISFEED REMO V AL When the misfeed ( ) indicator blinks or blinks in the display, the unit will stop because of a misfeed. 1 Open the side co ver, in that o rder. To open the side cover, see "TONER CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT" (p.21). 2 Check the mi sfeed locat ion.
29 6 A: Misfeed in t he paper feed area 1 Gently remove the mis fed paper from the paper feed area as shown in the illus tration. When the misf eed ( ) in dicator blinks, and the misfed paper is not seen from the paper feed area, pull out the paper tray and remove the mi sfed paper.
30 6 2 Gently remove the misfed paper from under the fusing unit as shown in the illustrat ion. If the paper cannot be removed, proceed to "C: Misfeed in the tr ansport area". 3 Raise the fusin g unit release le ver and then close the sid e cover by pressing the round projections near th e side cover open button.
31 6 4 Raise the fusin g unit release le ver, close the front cov er and then close the side cover by pr essing the round projections near the side cov er open button.
32 The procedure for installing the software fo r the optio nal Printe r/Scanner Expansion Kit (AL-12PKM) and the operation of the printer/scanne r is explained here. Information on how to use the online manual is also provided. For the proced ure for installing the AL-12PKM, see the setup guide that accompanies the AL-12PKM.
33 7 HARD W ARE AND SOFTW ARE REQ UIREMENTS Check the following hardware and software requirements in order to inst all the software. * 1 Compatible with Windows 98, Wi ndows Me, Windows 2000 Professional, Wi ndows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition prei nstalled model with USB interface equipped as standard.

35 7 INST ALLING THE SOFTW ARE The following term is used in this section. MFP Means the unit as a pri nter and scanner. Installing onto Windows XP (USB/parallel interface) Before starting the installation, make sure the USB or parallel interface cable is not connected to the MFP.
36 5 Review the so ftware packages to be installed on the screen , and then clic k the "Start" button. The software packages to be installed will be displayed on the screen. If inappropriate packages are displayed, click the "Back" button to select appropriate packages again.
37 7 7 Begin installation of t he Button Manager (This step will start if it was select ed in step 4). 1 After confirming the message in the "Welcome" window, click the "Next" button. 2 Read the message in the "Please r ead the following information.
38 10 Connect the USB int erface cable or parallel interface cable. (p.59) Windows will detect the MFP and the Plug and Play screen wil l appear. If you are using Windows XP with the parallel interfa ce, go to step 12. 11 Begin installation of the scanner driver.
39 7 Installing onto Windows 98/ Me/2000 (USB interface) Before starting the installation, make sure the USB interface cable is not connecte d to the MFP. 1 Insert the suppli ed CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 2 Double-click "My Computer " ( ), and then double-click the CD-ROM ( ) icon.
40 6 Copying files for MFP driver inst allation. 1 After confirming the message in the "Welcome" window, click the "Next" button. 2 A dialog box appears aski ng you to verify that the interface cable is not connected to th e MFP. Make sure that the interface cable is not connecte d and click the "Next" butt on.

45 7 INDICA T ORS ON THE OPERA TION P ANEL The ONLINE indicator and the start ( ) indica tor indicate the stat e of the printer or scanner. Start indicator On: Indicates the unit is ready for copying or scanning is bei ng performed. Blinking: The indicator blinks in th e following situations: • When a print job is interru pted.
46 USING THE PRINTER MODE Opening the printer driver from the start menu Open the printer driver setup screen by the me thod shown below. 1 Click the "star t" button. 2 Click "Control Panel", select "Printers and Other Hardware", and then click "Printer s and Faxes".
47 7 4 Specify the print settings includ ing the number of copies, media type, and print qualit y, and then click the "Print" button to start printin g. On Windows 95/98/Me /NT 4.0, click the "OK" button to start prin ting. For details on print settings, see the online manual or the hel p file for the printer driver.
48 USING THE SCANNER MODE Using the Button Manager Setting up the Bu tton Manager The scanner driver for this unit incl udes an STI (Still im age) driver and WIA (Windows Ima ge Acquisitio n) driver. You can install so ftware that su pports the STI driver and WIA driver to enable scanning us in g only the operation panel of the unit.
49 7 Windows 98/ Me/2000 To scan directly into an applicati on using the Button Manager on Windows 98, Windows Me and Window s 2000. Set the Ev ent Ma nager properties to send only to Button Manager as shown below.
50 Scan Parameter Setting Dialog Box After you have completed the Button Manager settings in Windows, configure the scan settings in Button Ma nager. To configure the scan settin gs in Button Manager, right cl ick the ( ) icon in the Taskbar and se lect "Setting" from the menu that appears.
51 7 The settings for the Windo ws Event Manager fo r the SHARP AR-xxxx (where xxxx is the model name of your unit) device allow the user to take advantage of the Sharp Button Manager to take control of events from Windows and send scanned images to any of six different applications according to the Button Manager setting.
52 Using the SCANNER key to begin scannin g 1 Press the SCANNER ( ) key. The unit enters scan mo de. 2 Place the origi nal you wish to scan on the original table. For the procedure for pl acing the or iginal, see "ORIGINAL PLACEMENT" (p.14).
53 7 4 Press the sta rt ( ) ke y. The selected application launch es and scanning begins. If the following screen appears, select Button Manager and click "OK". Button Manager starts and the application associated with Button Manager starts.
54 3 Select "SHARP Personal MFP series", and cli ck the "Select" button. 4 Select "Acquire Image" from the "File" menu , or click the "Acquire" button ( ) . 5 Set the configur ation for scann ing (refer to the onl ine manual and help file), and click the "Sca n" button.

56 HO W T O USE THE ONLINE MANU AL The online manu al provides detailed instruct ions for op erating the unit as the printer or scanner and a list of methods for dealing with printing or scanner probl ems. To access the online manual, your comput er must have Acrobat Rea der 5.

58 USING O THER INST ALLED DRIVERS If you use another GDI pri nter or a Windows Printi ng System pr inter, interference between printers may occur and printing may not be performed properly. To use another GDI printer or a Window s Printing System printer, you must change the port setting of the printer driver using the follow ing procedure.
59 7 CONNECTING THE INTERF A CE CABLE This unit includes both USB and parallel in terface connectors. Interface cables for connecting the unit to your co mputer are not included with this unit.
60 Connecting the paralle l interface cable 1 Obtain an IEE E1284 shie lded parallel i nterface cable. 2 Ensure that yo ur computer and unit are tu rned off. 3 Insert the cable into the parallel interface co nnector located on the rear of the unit, and fasten with clasps.
