3 SAFETY R ULES I. GENERAL OPERA TION • Read, understand, and f ollow all instructions on the machine and in the manual bef ore star ting. • Do not put hands or f eet near rotating par ts or under the machine. K eep clear of the discharge opening at all times.
4 SAFETY R ULES II. SLOPE OPERA TION Slopes are a major f actor related to loss of control and tip-ov er accidents, which can result in se vere injury or death. Oper a- tion on all slopes requires e xtra caution. If you cannot bac k up the slope or if y ou feel uneasy on it, do not mow it.
5 SAFETY R ULES • Remov e gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible , then refuel such equipment with a por table container , r ather than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle.

10 CHECK TIRE PRESSURE The tires on your tr actor were ov er infl ated at the f actor y f or shipping pur poses. Cor- rect tire pressure is impor tant for best cutting perf or mance. • Reduce tire pressure to PSI sho wn in “PRODUCT SPEC I FI CA TIONS” section of this manual.

15 ADD GASOLINE • Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank fi ller neck. Do not ov erfi ll. Use fresh, clean, reg u lar un lead ed gasoline with a min i mum of 87 octane. (Use of leaded gasoline will increase carbon and lead o xide de pos its and reduce v alve lif e).
16 T O ST AR T ENGINE When star ting the engine for the fi rst time or if the engine has run out of fuel, it will take e xtra cranking time to mo ve fuel from the tank to the engine. 1. Be sure freewheel control is in the trans mis sion en gaged position.
17 MO WING TIPS • Mo wer should be properly lev eled for best mowing perf or mance. See “T O LEVEL MO WER HOUSING” in the Ser vice and Adjustments sec tion of this manual. • The left hand side of mo wer should be used f or trim ming. • Driv e so that clippings are dis charged onto the area that has already been cut.

20 V -BEL TS Check V -belts for deterioration and w ear after 100 hours of operation and replace if necessar y . The belts are not ad just ab le. Re place belts if the y begin to slip from wear . ENGINE LUBRICA TION Only use high quality detergent oil rated with API ser vice classifi cation SG-SL.
21 02744 ENGINE OIL FIL TER Replace the engine oil fi lter e very sea son or e very other oil change if the tractor is used more than 100 hours in one year . AIR FIL TER Y our engine will not r un properly using a dir ty air fi lter . Replace pre-cleaner after e very 25 hours of operation or e very season.
22 CLEANING • Clean engine , batter y , seat, fi nish, etc. of all f oreign matter . • K eep fi nished surf aces and wheels free of all gasoline, oil, etc.
