Getting Started 10 1 Switching Be tween Copy Mode and Facsimile M ode This machine is both a fax and a copier. When you t urn on the power switch, th e copier screen i s shown and the machine is ready to make copies. When you wish to use fax functions, press the { Fa csimile } key.
Reading the Display 11 1 Reading t he Display The display tells you the machine status and guides you through ope rations. Note ❒ All procedures in this manual assu me you are in Facsimile mode. By default, when you turn the m achine on it is in Copy mode.

Faxing 14 2 Setting O riginals In this manual an o riginal c an mean a single or multiple page document. You can s et y our originals either in the Do cument F eeder or on the expo- sure glass. Some t ypes o f originals are unsuitable for the Document Feeder so they must be set o n the exposure glass.

Memory Trans mission 19 2 Memory Tr ansmission In Me mory Transmission mo de, after you press t he { St art } key, the machine does n ot di al t he destin atio n u ntil all pages of your fax message have scanned into memory (in contrast with Immediat e Transmissio n, where the number is diale d first and pages are scanned and sent one by one).
Faxing 20 2 B Set the original. Lim itati on ❒ You can send the first pages from the exp osure glass then the remaining pages from the Document Feeder. After you place the last page on th e expo- sure glass, you have 60 second s to in se rt th e rema ining p ages in the Document Feeder.

Faxing 22 2 Canceling a Me mory Transmission Canceling the Trans mission Before the Original is Scanned A Pre ss th e { { { { Clear Modes } } } } key. Note ❒ When you set the docu ment in the Doc ument Feeder , yo u can cancel the transmission by just removing it.
Cancelin g a Memory Tr ansmissi on 23 2 Canceling a Transmis sion While the Me ssage is Be ing Sen t Use this procedure to c ancel a trans- mission after the original has be en scanned. Limitatio n ❒ If transmission finishes while you are carrying out this procedure, it will not be canceled.
Faxing 24 2 Immediate Trans mission With Imme diate Transmission, when y o u p r e s s t h e { Start } key, the fax number is dialed immediately. The message is scanned and transmitted page by page without being stor ed in memory . This cont rasts with Memory Transmission which scans all pages into memor y before dial ing the desti- nati on.

Scan Sett ings 27 2 Scan Settings You may w ish t o send many different types of fax messages. Some o f these may be di fficul t to reprod uce at the other end. However , your machine has three settings that you can adj ust to help you transmi t your document with the best possib le image quality .

Scan Sett ings 29 2 Image Densi ty (Contrast ) The text an d diagra ms in your o rigi- na l s ho ul d s ta nd ou t c le ar l y f ro m t he paper they are written on. If your original has a darker background than normal (for e xample, a newspa- per clipping), or i f th e wr iting is f aint, adjust the image density.
Faxing 30 2 Dialing There are three main ways to dial a numb er: ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Number keys: Enter numbers directly using the number keys on the right side of the oper ation panel. ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ Quick Dials: When you have stored a destina- tion's num ber in a Quick Dial key, you can dial the number by just pressing tha t key.
Dialing 31 2 - - - - Restriction s When Di aling wi th the Number Keys Fax numbers entered with the number keys are stor ed in inte rnal memory (separate fro m memory for storing origi nal data).
Faxing 32 2 Tone This feature allows a machine con- nected to a p ulse dialing l ine to send tonal signals (for example i f you want to use a spe cial service on a tone dial- ing l ine). When you pre ss the { Tone } key, the ma chine dials the number us- ing tonal signals.
Dialing 33 2 C Press the Quick Dial key in which the destinati on's number is pro- grammed. If the de stination's name h as been stored, the name is shown on the display . If it is not, the fax number is shown. Note ❒ If you make a mistake, press the { Clear/Stop } key and try again.
Faxing 34 2 C Pre ss th e { { { { Speed Di al } } } } key. D Enter the two digit code (00 to 99) for the destination with the number k eys. Note ❒ When a name is stor ed for the destination , t he na me is dis- played, an d when n o name is stored, the fax num ber is dis- playe d.

Faxing 36 2 Recepti on Selecting the Reception Mod e There are two ways you can set up your machine to handle incoming calls: • Auto R ecept ion mode • Manual Reception mode (external telephon e or h andset req uired) The default setting is Auto reception mode.

Setup 40 3 Quick Dia l Register ing Quick Dials To save time, you can program a fax number that yo u use often into a Quick Dial key. Then, w henever yo u are sending a message to that loca- tion, just press that Quick Dial key to dial. Use the following step s to program a new Qui ck Dial or to edit or overwrit e existing Quick Dials.
Quick Dia l 41 3 F Display the number of the Q uick Dial key you want to register. Press a Quick Dial k ey, or search using 0 or 1 . Note ❒ If a Quick Dial has already been stored, the contents ar e dis- played. Press 0 o r 1 to select a Quick Di al that is not pro - grammed, then press the { OK } key.

3 1. Transmission Options Overv iew This feature describes various options th at you can choose when sending a fax message. The selection s you make will only apply to the current fax message. Note ❒ If you frequently use a certain configuration of options, you can change their default sett ings (on or off) with the User Parameters.
Transmissi on Options 4 1 Sending at a Speci fic Time (Send Later) Using this feature, you can in struct the machine to delay transmission of your fax message until a later time which you specify. This allows you to take advantage of off-peak telephone charges without having to be by the machine at the time .
Sending at a Spe cific Ti me (Send Later) 5 1 J Enter the time that you want to send t he fax messa ge. Note ❒ When entering numbers small- er than 10 , add a lead ing zero. ❒ If you make a mistake, press the { Clear/Stop } key and try again. ❒ If the current time shown on the display is not correct, change it.
Transmiss i on Opt ions 6 1 Personal Code Transmission Personal Codes allow you to keep track of m achine usage (for example, for billing purposes). If everybody u s e s a P e r s o n al C o d e w h e.
Choosing the Are a to be Sca nned Yourself (Irreg ular Scan Area) 7 1 Choosing th e Area t o be Scanned Yourself (Irregular Scan Area) Usually the machine automatically detects the size of an original when it is scanned. However, you may wish to overrid e this and choose the area to be scanned yourself.

Fax Head er Print 9 1 Fax Header Print By default, the machine adds your Fax H eader to each m essage you send so it appears on the printed fax at the other end. See Chapter 3 “Own Name/Fax H eader/Ow n Fax Number” i n the Basic Features manu- al.
Transmissi on Options 10 1 Label Inse rtion With this feature yo u can have the re- ceiver 's name printe d on the message when it is received at the other end. The name will be pr inted at the top of the p age and will be preceded by "To".
Auto Reduct ion 11 1 Auto Reduction By default, if the receiver's paper is smaller than the paper you are send- ing on, the message is automatically reduce d to fit onto the paper available at the other end.
Transmissi on Options 12 1 Polling Receptio n Use this f unction if you w ant to poll a message from another terminal. You can also poll do cuments from many term inals with only one operat ion (use Groups to fully exploit this fea- ture). Limitatio n ❒ Polling Reception requires that the other machin e can perf orm Polling Transmission.

Printi ng a List of File s in Memor y (Print TX Fil e List ) 19 2 Printing a List of Files in Memory (Print TX File List ) Print this list if you wish to find out which files a re stored in memory and what their file numbers ar e. Knowing the file number can be useful (for ex- ample when erasing files).
