Getting Started 5 T ext Con ventions This manual provides cond ensed information ab out how to use your phone. T o make this possible, the followi ng text conventions are used to represen t often-used steps: Example: “From the Home screen, press the Menu Key , then touch Settings ➔ Wireless & networks ➔ Wi-Fi settings .
6 Batter y Y our phone is powered by a re chargeable, stand ard Li-Ion battery . A Wall/USB Charger (Cha rging Head and USB cable) are included with the phone, for charging the battery . Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the batter y before using your phone for the first time.
Getting Started 7 Inst alli ng the Batter y 1. Remove the battery cover . For more information, see “Removing the ba ttery co ver” on page 6. 2. Insert battery into the phone housing, aligning the gold contacts on the batter y with the gold co ntacts in the phone.
8 Charging the Batter y Y our phone comes with a W all/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) to rapidly charge your phone from any 120/220 V AC outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the batter y before using your phone for the first time.
Getting Started 9 Non-Supported Batteries Samsung handsets do not support the use of non-approved batteries. Import ant!: Using a non-supported battery may damage to your phone. When using a non-supported battery you will hear a series of beeps and see a warning message: “ NON-SUPPORTED BATTER Y .
10 Y our Goog le Account Y our new phone uses your Go ogle account to fu lly utilize its Android features, including Gmail, Google Maps, Google T alk and the Android Market. When you turn on your phone for the first time, set up a connection wit h your existing Google acc ount, or create a new Goog le account.
Getting Started 11 V oicemail All unanswere d calls to your phone are sent to vo icemail, even if your phone is turned off, so you’ ll want to set up your voicemail and personal greeting as soon as you activate your phone. For more information , see “Voi cemail” on page 35.

The greater the number of bars, th e stronger the signal. Airplane Mode Active : All wireless co mmunications are disabled.
20 Naviga tion Navigate your phone’ s features using the command keys and the touch screen. Warning!: If your handset has a touch screen display , please note that a touch screen responds best to a light touch from the pad of your finger or a non-metallic stylus.

24 Adding and r emoving H ome scre en panels Y our phone comes with 7 Ho me screen panels. Y o u can customize the Ho me screen to in c lude up to the seven default panels, and set one panel as Home. 1. From the Home screen, press the Menu Key , then touch Edit page .

30 Section 3: Call Functions This section describes how to make, answer or end cal ls. Making Calls Y our phone offers multip le ways to make calls: • Use the touch screen Phone Dialer to enter the phone number or speed dial number , then press the Send Key .
Call Functions 31 Making Calls from Con tacts A contact is a n entry that you have created to st ore the name, numbers, and othe r information for people or gr oups of interest. For more information, see “Contacts” on page 40. 1. From a Home screen, touch Contacts .
32 Answ ering a Call T o answer an inco ming call: 䊳 Press the Send Key . – or – T ouch Accept on the Incoming call screen. Sending Calls to V oicemail When your phone alerts you to an incoming call, you can ignore the call by rej ecting it to send the caller to voice mail, or reject the call and send a message to the caller .
Call Functions 33 Silencing an Incoming Call Ringtone When your phon e alerts you to an incoming call, you can silence the ringtone for th e call by one of the se methods: • T ouch Silence on the Incoming call scree n. • Press the V olume Key down.
34 Manag ing th e Call Log Deleting Call log r ecords 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone ➔ Call log . 2. While viewing the Call log, press t he Menu Key , then select Delete . 3. T ouch call records to mark them for deleti on, or touch Select all .

Accounts Y our phone provides t he ability to synchroniz e information from a variety of accounts, including Google, a Corporate Exchange server , and social networking si tes such as Facebook, T witter , and MySpace.
Contacts and Accounts 37 Managing a Google acco unt 1. From the Ho me screen, press the Menu Key , then touch Settings ➔ Accounts & sync . 2. T ap your Google acco unt to display the Data & synchronization screen. 3. T ap a setting to enable or di sable synchroniz ation.
38 Managing a Cor por ate Exchange account 1. From the Home screen, press the Menu Key , then touch Settings ➔ Accounts & sync . 2. T ouch your Corporate account to display settings, then touch Account settings for these settings: • General settings – Account name : Enter a name to iden tify the account.
Contacts and Accounts 39 Setting Up a Facebook account Note: Y ou must register your phone with Facebook before using the phone to access the site. From your Facebook account, go to Account Settings and follow the “Activate a Phone” registration instructions.
40 Contacts T o access Contacts: 䊳 From the Home screen, touch Contacts . Creati ng Cont acts 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts ➔ Create contact . 2. At the Save cont act to prompt, touch an account for saving the contact : • Phone : Saves t o the phone’s Contacts.
Contacts and Accounts 41 Creating Contacts fr om the Phone Dialer Enter a phone number with the Phone Dial er keypad, then save it . 1. From a Home screen, touch Phone . 2. T ouc h the digits of th e phone number on the Dialer keypad. 3. Press the Menu Key , then touch Add to Contacts ➔ Create contact from the pop-up menu.
42 Updating Contacts from Call log Save a phone number from a recent call record to create a new contact, or update an existing contact. For more information, see “Creating or Updating Contacts Using Call Log” on page 33. Get Friends Use the Get Friends feature to sync with you r accounts.
Contacts and Accounts 43 Linked Cont acts Y our phone can synchronize with multiple accounts, inc luding Google, Corporate Exc hange, and other email provide rs, plus social networking sites like Face book, T witter , and My Space. When you synchronize contacts from thes e accounts with your phone, you may have multiple contacts for one person.
44 Sending N amecards Sending a Namecard ( vCard) Y ou can send a contact namecard as a vCards via Bluet ooth to other Bluetooth devices, or via Gma il as an attachment. Important!: Not all Bluetooth devices will accept contacts, and not all devices support transfers of multiple contacts.
Contacts and Accounts 45 Backing Up Y o ur Conta cts Use Backup Assistant to save a copy of you r Contacts to a secure web site. For more information, see “ Backup Assistant” on page 50. 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts . 2. Press the Menu Key , then touch Backup .

50 Backup Assistant Backup Assistant is a wireless service that saves a copy of your Contacts to a secure web site. If yo ur phone is lost, stolen or damaged, Backup Assist ant can restore your saved contacts to a new phone, wirelessly . Y ou can schedule ba ckups to save your information manual ly or automatically .
Entering T ext 51 Section 5: Entering T ext This section describes how to en ter words, letters, punctuation and numbers when yo u need to enter text. Vir tual QWERTY Keyboard Y our phone uses a virt ual QWERTY keyboard for text entry .
52 Entering T ext Using Swype Swype is a new way to enter te xt on touch screens. Inste ad of touching each key , use your finger to trace over each lett er of a word. For each word, place your fing er o n the first letter and glide to the subsequent letters, li fting on the last letter .
Entering T ext 53 Entering Symbols Enter common symbols by one of these me thods: • T ouch and hold on a ke y to enter th e symbol at the top of t he key . • T ouch and hold o n a key until a menu of all characters avai lable on that key appe ars, then touch a character to enter it.
54 Section 6: Messaging This section describes how to se nd and receive messages, and other features associ ated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our phone supports these types of messages: • T ext messages: Send and receive simple messages containing text to other mobile phones or email addres ses (also known as SMS).
Messaging 55 T ext and Multimedia Messaging Y our phone can send and receive text and multimedia messages to other mobile phones and to em ail addresses. Creat ing and Sending M essages 1. From the Home screen, touch Messa ging ➔ New message . 2. Ta p t h e To field to enter recipients: • Enter contacts by name .
56 Manag ing Mes sages Thr eaded View Messages you send and receive to the same contact, number or address are grouped to gether as a “thread”. Threaded messages allow you to se e all the messages yo u exchanged with a contact, or other recipient, with the latest message displayed first.
Messaging 57 Gmail Send and receiv e emails via Gmail, Goo gle’ s web-based email. Tip: Use the Set-up Wizard to set up your Google account on your phone. For more information, see “Set-up Wizard” on page 10. 䊳 From t he Home screen, select Applications ➔ Gmail .

Messaging 59 Email Send and receiv e email using pop ular email services. Note: Only some paid “Plus” accounts include POP access to allow this program to connect. If you are not able to sign in with your correct email address and password, you may not have a paid “Plus” account.

68 Maps Menu 1. From the Home screen, select Applications ➔ Maps . 2. While viewing a map, press the Menu Key : •S e a r c h : Enter te xt criteria to find locations or points of int erest. • Directions : Get driving, public transp ort, or w alking direct ions.
Music 69 Section 8: Music Music Music plays music fi les from an installed memory card. Playin g Music 1. From t he Home screen, select Applications ➔ Music . Music searches for an installed memory card, and displays songs stored on the card. 2. Select a sort option to displ ay your music files, from Artists , Albums , Songs , or Playlists .
70 T ran sfer ri ng Musi c to a Memor y Card 3. From the Home screen, press the Menu Key , then touch Settings ➔ USB Settings ➔ USB mode , and select Mass Storage . 4. Attach your phone to the PC with a USB cable. Y our phone recognizes the connection and displays USB connected in the Annunciator Line and Notifications Panel.
Music 71 V CAST Music with Rhapsody (Subscription, Wireless and PC Downloads) V CAST Music with Rhapsody ® is a digi tal music service that le ts you listen to millions of songs fr om thous ands of artists. Discover new and old favorites in an exte nsive music catalog.
72 Dow nload Music to y our PC When you purchase music with your wireless de vice, you can also download a copy to your PC using the V CAST with Rhapsody software. 1. On your PC, launch V CAST M usic with Rhapsody . 2. Log in. After logging in, locate and download music files.
Music 73 Import Songs from an A udio CD Use V CAST Music with Rhapsody on your PC to organize tracks from your CDs. Y ou can then tra nsfer these tracks to your phone. 1. On your PC, launch V CAST Music with Rhapsody . 2. Insert an audio CD into the CD-ROM drive.

Connections 83 Blueto oth Bluetooth is a short-ra nge wireless communi cations technology for exchanging info rmation over a di stance of about 30 feet . Y ou don’t need to line up the de vices to send information with Bluetooth. If the devices ar e in range, you can exchange informatio n between them, even if they are in different rooms.
84 VPN Y ou can use your phone’ s VPN (Virtu al Private Netw ork) feature to connect to VPNs. Configuring VPN Se ttings Configure your phone’ s VPN settings.
