Startin g and driving If the car does not start If the text ”Key not ac cepte d. Contact se rvice.” is shown on t he SID, after a failed sta rt attempt, th e cause could be a fault in th e transmitte r in the k ey, or in the rec eiver in the igniti on lock.
Star ting and d rivin g It is po ssibl e for air to enter the lu bricating system in co njunct ion with an oil or oil-filte r change, or if the car has been st ored for some time. Thi s air can cause the hydraulic cam fo llowers to e mit a t icking noise , whic h can pers ist for up to 15 minutes afte r start- ing.
Startin g and driving Useful tips on cold climate starting If the engine has faile d to start after sev eral attempts in v ery cold weather, press and hol d the a cc ele rato r do wn to the f loo r and run the s tarter fo r 5–10 seconds . This will prevent t he engine bein g flooded (exce s- sivel y ri ch fuel -air mixtu re ).
Star ting and d rivin g Impo rtan t cons ider ation s for driving The engine-m anagement syste m in the Saab 9- 5 is ca lled Sa ab Trio nic T7. The system manages the i gnition, fuel injection and turbo boost pressure.
Startin g and driving Important consi derations wit h catalyti c converters The cata lytic c onverte r is an e mission -con- trol devi ce incorporated i n the car’s exha ust system . It c onsists of a met al canister w ith a honeyc omb i nsert, t he cells of which hav e wall s coa ted in a c ataly tic laye r (mix tur e of precious metals ).
Star ting and d rivin g Refueling WARNIN G If you spill fuel and th en som ething ignites it, you could be ba dly burne d. Fuel can spray ou t on you if you open the fuel cap too quic kly. This spray can happ en if your tank is nearly full, and is more like ly in hot weathe r.

Star ting and d rivin g When the car is statio nary, the engine must be a t idli ng speed when the se lector leve r is moved. You must ha ve your foot on th e brake pedal to m ove the lever out of p ark. If the ac celera tor is depresse d while the lever is moved, this will res ult in abnormal wear in th e transmission.
Startin g and driving Lock-up functi on The autom atic transmis sion has a lo ck-up function, w hich c an rend er the torqu e con- verter inop erative in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears, thus reduci ng the engine speed and fuel consum ption.
Star ting and d rivin g If ”Automa tic tra nsmission , fault indicato r” light appears on the m ain instrum ent pa nel, the sys tem has detected a f ault in th e auto- matic t ransmissio n or it s control mo dule (see page 57).
Startin g and driving Driving on hi lly roads with a heavy load The trans missio n fluid can ove rheat w hen the gearb o x is s trained, fo r example, when driving with a trailer on hi lly roads. To avoid the trans mission fluid ov erheating, alw ays drive in Normal mode.

Star ting and d rivin g Recommend ations for cars with manual gearbox Rises in coolant tempe rature are indi cated by the tempera ture gauge in the main instru - ment pan el. The follow ing step s are taken in orde r as the temperatu re of the eng ine in crease s: • A/C compress or is s witched off .
Startin g and driving Trailer hi tch load The weig ht distribut ion on the trailer makes a lot of differe nce to the handling pro perties of the c ar and trailer com binat ion. As regards sin gle-axle trailers, wh enever pos- sible, co ncentra te the load over the wheel s and kee p it as low as possib le.
Star ting and d rivin g Driving with a roof ra ck load The max imum pe rmissib le roof load is 220 lbs. (100 kg).
