11 Safety Safet y belts Three-point inertia-reel safety belts are provided for all seats. The results of st udies show that it is eq ually important to wear safe ty belts in the rear seat a s in the front seats .
12 Safety Corre ct pos itio n for sa fet y belt Consider thi s: • P osition the lap s trap snugl y and lo w across the hips so that i t just touches the thighs . The sho ulder str ap must be as fa r in on the sho ulder as possi ble . • Chec k to ensure that the belt is no t twisted or rubb ing again s t an y shar p edges .
13 Safety Front saf ety bel ts Fasten th e belt by pulli ng the belt and insert- ing the tongue in the buckle. C heck that it is securel y fast ened. Posi tio n th e lap part low acros s t he hip s. Grasp th e shoulde r belt close to th e buckle and pull the belt towa rds the sh oulder to tighten t he lap belt part.
14 Safety Safety belt us e during pregnancy Pregnant w omen m ust alway s wear a safety b elt to pro tect both themselves and the unbo rn child. The lap belt should be placed low, a cross the hips and ove r the uppe r thighs. Safety belt pretensioners Sport Sedan: T he front safety b elts are equippe d with pretens ioners and forc e limit- ers.
15 Safety Safety belt s, rear seat Safety b elts rear s eat, Conver tible, see page 67 The three rear seats all have three-poi nt safe ty belt s w ith in erti a r eel s. Fasten the bel ts by pulling the belt across you and inse rting the tongue into the buckl e.

17 Safety Legroom adjustment Lift the lev er under the fron t of the seat an d slide th e seat to the de sired position . Back rest rake a ngle To find the most comforta ble posi tion, turn the knob to prov ide steples s adjustme nt of the backr est. Lumbar support, Sport S edan Adjust the firmness of the lumb ar support by turning t he knob.
18 Safety Electri cally adju stable front seat s (option) With the do ors closed the s eats can o nly be adjust ed when the ign ition is ON. However , there are two except ions: • T o f acilitate getting into the car , both s eats can be adjusted when ei ther of the fro nt doors is open.
19 Safety Backrest rake ang le Adjust th e rake angle of the backrest wit h the rear l ever. Lumbar support, driver’s seat Adjust the firm ness of the lumbar sup port by turning the knob.
20 Safety When the ignition is O N, all sea t settings can be adjus ted. When the door is ope n and before the remote control has been inser ted into the ignition swi tch, all seat settings can be adjus ted for up to 20 minut es. The mem ory also include s the doo r mirror settings .

27 Safety Installation of child rest raint using the stand ard safet y belt Chil d rest ra ints that are appr oved for r ear - war d faci ng i nst alla tion in t he re ar s eat can be pos itioned in any of the three re ar places. Make su re that it is pos sible to fit it in accor- dance w ith the manufactu rer’s instructio ns.

29 Safety The dr iver and passenger front airbags a re triggered by violent fr ont-end cra shes. Th ey are not acti vated by minor fron t-end impacts , if the ca r overturns or by rear- a nd side-impac ts. There are two impa ct sensors on the fron t bumper, un der the lacquere d shell.

31 Safety WARNIN G • Even if the car is equi pped with AIRBAGS, safety be lts must still alw ays be worn by all occu pants. • Note that becau se an airbag inflates and defl ates extremely rapidly , it will not pr ovide prot ection agai nst a second impact occurring in the same incide nt.
32 Safety Front passenger se at The system is the same as that us ed on the driver’s sid e. The airbag systems ar e interco nnected and have a co mmon warning light . The pas- senger airbag module is housed i n the fascia ab ove the gl ove compartm ent and i s marked "AIRBAG".
33 Safety Head protection The pill ar trim and head lining (not Co nverti- ble soft top ) are desi gned to absorb energy , softenin g possi ble blows to the head. After a crash , these item s must b e change d in the seat po sitions that w ere occupi ed.
34 Safety Inflatable curtains, Sport Sedan WARNIN G • Do not sit with y our head rested agains t the side window. The infla t- able cu rtain is desig ned to inf late betwee n the windo w and the hea d. Resti ng the hea d agains t the windo w could p revent the in flatable curtain from pro vidi ng t he in tend ed protecti on.
35 Safety The infl atable cu rtains, which pro tect the head, are conc ealed al ong the le ngths of the headli ning (all the way fro m front to rear roof pil lars) . The infl atable curtains inflate a t the same time as t he side airbags i n the front seats in case of a side-on i mpact.
36 Safety Airbag wa rning lamp Servicin g the airbag system The air bag sys tem must be inspect ed as part of the normal service program but oth- erwise may be regard ed as maintena nce- free.
37 Safety Frequently asked questions on function of th e airbag Do you still n eed to w ear a safe ty belt i f air- bags are fitted? Yes, alw ays! The airbag s ystem com po- nents m erely su pplement the car’s normal safety s ystem.
38 Safety How lou d is the inflation? The nois e of the i nflation is ce rtainly loud, but it is of an ve ry short du ration and will not damage your hearing.

43 Securit y Locking a c ar wit h dead ba ttery The stee ring wheel loc k require s suffic ient batter y voltage to lock and unloc k. If the bat- tery vol tage drops b elow a cert ain level while the remote c ontrol is in the ig nition swit ch, yo u will not be ab le to r emove the remote c ontrol.

45 Securit y Trunk Release Handle There is a glow- in-the-dark trunk rele ase handle l ocated inside the trunk on the l atch. This ha ndle will glo w followi ng expos ure to light.
46 Security Changing the key bat tery When the voltage of th e remote control bat- tery dr ops belo w a ce rtain leve l, the Saab Inform ation Disp lay (SID) will disp lay: Change the batte ry as so on as possibl e to avoid m alfuncti oning.
47 Securit y 3 Change the ba tter y . Fit the ne w battery so that i t is positione d in the s ame w ay as the o ld battery , with t he positiv e (+) side fa cing d own. 4 Fit the two halv es of th e remote c ontrol together and press them toge ther until you hear a cli ck.
48 Security If, when inserted into the ign ition swit ch, there is a problem chec king the electronic code of the remote control, the follow ing messag e will app ear on the SID: Visit a Sa ab dealer to have the problem checke d and rec tified. Car al arm The car al arm is arme d when the car is locked wi th the remote co ntrol.
49 Securit y To avoid any inconveni ence, mak e sure that anyone using the car i s famili ar with how the car alarm and the locking sy stem work. If the al arm has been tri pped sin ce the ca r was la.
50 Security Panic function The car al arm includes a panic functio n. This functi on allows the al arm to be started manually , for exam ple, to a ttract atte ntion. The panic alarm can only be acti vated while the car is st ationary. T he alarm is silen ced if the car is driven off.

55 9-3 C onvertibl e Operat ing the s oft top Read the "Advice on soft top ope ration" section on page 54 before operati ng the soft top. The soft to p is operated w ith the s witch on the instr ument panel . Hold the swi tch in the desired p osition u ntil the soft top is fully folded or ra ised.

65 9-3 C onvertibl e "Easy e ntr y" To facil itate getting in and out of th e rear seat, the front seats ca n be slid forward. Manual ly adjusted passenger seats 1 Raise the h andle b y the head re straint on the se at. 2 Tip the ba ckre st and sl ide the s eat fo r w a r d.
66 9-3 Co nvertibl e Head rest raints The front seats are equip ped wit h Saab Active Head Re straints (SAHRs). These r e d u c e t h e r i s k o f n e c k i n j u r y i f t h e c a r i s h i t from behi nd. The SAHR i s a mec hanical system , actu- ated by bo dy weight.

70 9-3 Co nvertibl e Interio r lightin g The inter ior lighting con s ists o f a front ro of light, tw o front re ading lig hts, footw ell lig ht- ing and courtesy light ing in the do ors. The light switches are located in the roo f con- sole. The cabi n lightin g comes on: • When a door is op ened and th e ignition is OFF .

74 Instru ments an d contro ls Warning and indicator lights The foll owing warning a nd indicate lig hts are found on the main in strument pan el. This w arning li ght illum inates wh en a fault arises in the ant ilock brake system.
75 Instruments and controls This ligh t will come on if the engin e oil pres- sure is to o low. If the wa rning ligh t flashes or comes on while you are dri ving, stop im me- diately in a s afe place, sw itch o ff the en gine and che ck the oi l level (see page 196).
76 Instru ments an d contro ls This li ght shows when the high be am is on (see page 92). This l ight indi cates wh en the fron t fog li ghts are on (s ee page 9 3). The front fog lights are s witched o ff auto- matical ly when th e engine is s witched off.
77 Instruments and controls This li ght reminds the driver to buckle up. This lig ht comes on when th e parking brake is appl ied (see page 167). The park ing brake is mec hanical and oper- ates on the rear wheels. This ligh t comes on if a p otentiall y serious fault has occu red in the airbag system.
78 Instru ments an d contro ls This lig ht comes on when the re is less than about 2.5 gallons (10 litre) of fuel left i n the tank. This li ght indic ates that the headligh ts or parking lights are o n. This li ght comes o n when the syst em is engaged .
79 Instruments and controls Odometer and tr ip meter The odom eter re cords the distanc e trav- elle d in mil es on U .S. ve hic les an d on Can a- dian ve hicles the dis tance indic ated is in kilome tres, and the trip meter in mi les and tenths (k ilometre s and ten ths of kilomet res on Can adian ve hicles).
80 Instru ments an d contro ls Temperatu re gauge The tempera ture gauge shows the tempe r- ature of the coo lant. The needl e should be in the m iddle of the sc ale when the engine is at no rmal operating t emperature.
81 Instruments and controls If the needl e repeatedly enters th e red zone and t he engine at the sa me time lo ses power, bec ause the moni toring system is limitin g the boost pr essure, you shou ld contact a Saab dealer as soon as possible.

85 Instruments and controls When the en gine is started, the fu nction that was s elected wh en the engin e was switched off is displ ayed, w ith the following excepti ons: • Te m p is displa yed if t he outside tempera - ture is between 2 6 and 38°F (–3 an d +3°C).
86 Instru ments an d contro ls Speed warning This va lue is preset t o 55 mph (90 km/h). The val ue can be set to be tween 0 and 150 mph (0 and 250 km/h). 1 Select Speed W using th e INFO dial. 2 Press and hold th e INFO dial until given audib le confirmation.
87 Instruments and controls Calculating the requis ite average speed (What ave rage spee d do I need to mai n tain to get to my destina tion in ti me?) This fun ction sh ould be u sed before starting out a jo urney. To calcula te the requisite average sp eed, the dist ance must f irst be gi ven.
88 Instru ments an d contro ls Under Profi ler you can choose whether the entire s peedometer sca le (0–160 mph) o r only p art of th e scale (0–90 mph) should be illuminate d in NIGHTPANEL mode . 1 Press the CUST OMIZE b utton to g o to Profiler.

91 Instruments and controls Swit ches The park ing lights and daytime runnin g light s come on automatically when the igni - tion sw itch is in the ON po sition. High bea m can not be ac tivated in thi s posi- tion but headli ght flasher can. The park ing light s can be turned on irre- spectiv e of the position of the ign ition swit ch.
92 Instru ments an d contro ls High/low beam To swi tch betw een high a nd low beam, pu ll the cont rol stalk all th e way towards the steer ing whe el. (Head light swit ch must be ON.) The sy mbol on the main instr ume nt panel s hows when the h igh beam is o n.
93 Instruments and controls Front fog lights (c ertain variants only) The front fog lights shou ld be us ed in poo r visibi lity. These are a utomatic ally turned off when the engine i s switched off. When the car i s next started, t he fog lights w ill hav e to be switc hed back on m anually by press ing the fog ligh t switch.
94 Instru ments an d contro ls Hazard warning lights The butto n for the h a zard warni ng lights is loc ated o n th e cli mat e con trol pane l. When the but ton is pressed, all the di rection indicat ors and the symbo l in the butt on flash simulta neously .
95 Instruments and controls Wipers a nd was hers Windshield wipers Position 1 is a s pring-load ed posit ion that will p roduce a single sweep of the w ipers. In posi tion 2 you c an set t he delay perio d for intermit tent wiping us ing the th umbwheel on the stal k switch.
96 Instru ments an d contro ls Rain sensor (option) The rain s ensor aut omatically co ntrols the windshi eld wipers . The sensor is lo cated on the wind shield b eside the rearview m irror. The syst em varies the f requency of wiping between si ngle sweeps and continu ous wiping, dependin g on the a mount of pre- ci pitat ion.
97 Instruments and controls Adjusting se nsitivity The sens itivity of the rai n sensor can be adjuste d under Profiler. If you increase the sensiti vity, the wipers will make one sw eep for referen ce. 1 Press the CUST OMIZE b utton to g o to Profiler.
