5 IN STALLATI ON ATTACHING T HE MICROPHON E HOLDER You can conn ect the m icropho ne hold- er to t he right side of t he transceiver or to another location in your vehicle. To attach t he holder to the transceiver, secure it wi th the supplied m ounting screws and lockwashers.
6 Cautio n s: • I f you use the TRC-442 in a vehi - cle, m ount it se curely to avo id damage to the CB o r vehicle or i n- jury to a nyone in the v ehicle d ur- ing sudden starts or stops. • Do not mount the CB where it could damage or interfere with the proper operation of any p assive rest raint safety device (an air b ag or seat belt).
7 CONNECTING THE MICROPHON E 1. Align the notch on the m icrophone cable’s plug with the ridge in the MIC j ack, then insert th e plug into the j a ck . 2. T ighten the microph one cable’s outer ring by tu r ning it c lockwise. 3. Slide the m i crophone onto the m i - crophone hol der .
8 Cautio n s: • Do not run the cable over sha rp edges or moving parts that might damage it. • Do not run the cable next to power cables or other CB ant enna cables. • Do not run the cable through a vehicle’s engine com partme nt or other areas that produce ex treme heat.
9 USING THE CB AS A BASE STATION Although this CB is designed m ainly for mobile use, you can also use it as a base station with an AC pow er source. For base station in stallation, you need the f ollowing item s (a ll avail- able at your local RadioS hack store): • 12-vol t DC power supply (such as Cat.

14 MAXIMUM RANGE The maximum range and quality of CB radio transmission s vary dep ending on these conditions: • The type an d quality of antenna used • The height of t he antenna’s mounting lo .
15 T ROUBLES HOOTING If your CB is not working as it should, follow these sugg estions to see if y ou can eliminate the problem. If you cannot, take the CB to your local Radi oShack store for assist ance. S y mptom: Check T hat: T rou ble with reception • The CB is turned on.
16 REDUCING NOI SE Because y our CB i s exceptionally qui- et, an y noi se you hear through t he CB is probably f rom an external s o urce in your veh icle such as the alternator, a n- other radio, or s p ark plugs. The tran sceiver uses an A NL (Auto- matic Noise Limiter) circuit to reduce noi se.

18 REPLACING THE FUSE The TRC-442’s 2-amp in-line fu se helps protect your CB from power surges and short circuits. If the CB l os- es po wer becaus e the fuse has burned out, replace it usi ng a 2-amp, s low- blow glass fuse, such a s Cat. No. 270- 1023.
