6 PREP ARAT ION Select a l ocation for the T AD that is nea r modular telephone line jack(s ) and an AC outlet, and is n ot in the way of normal activities. 8 CONNECT ING THE AC ADAPTER Cautio n: The suppl ied AC adapter was designed s pecificall y f or your T AD-7 39. Use o nly the suppli ed adapter . 1. Insert the sup plied AC adap ter ’ s barrel plug into t h e AC 9V jac k on the back of the T AD. 2.
9 IN S TAL LING A BACKUP BATTE RY If AC po wer fails or you unpl ug th e T A D, a 9V backup battery (not su ppli e d) saves t he message groups , message coun t s, and the settings for the day , time, and s e cu rity cod e. W e recommend you use an alkaline battery , such as R a- dioS hack Cat.
10 1. Hold TIME SET until the T AD sounds one long beep and on e short beep, CL (cl ock) appears briefly , t hen a number from 1 (Sunday) – 7 (Sat- urday) a ppears, and t he T AD an- nounces the currently s et day .
11 1. T o record t h e O GM 1 (or OGM 2) mess age for each line, hol d down OGM 1 (or OGM 2 ) until the T AD beeps and both ANSW E R indicators flash. Notes : • Proceed ne xt step within 8 sec onds. Othe r wis e, the T AD sounds a short beep, an d you must start again fr om Step 1 .
12 BASIC O PERA TION SETTI NG THE T AD TO ANSWER CALLS The ANSWER indicator l i ghts to indi cate which line the T AD is set to answer on; or announc e only . A steady light indi- cates the line is set to answer on. A flashing light indicates the line is set to announc e only .
13 Notes: • The m aximum recordi ng capacity is 32 m inutes or 59 m essages. • Many local phon e companies u s e calling party control (CPC) to signal that t he caller has h ung up.
14 T o play only new mes sages, hold down the desired PLA Y button for 2 second s. The T AD tells you how many new mes- sages you h ave in that li ne and plays the m. After all mes s a ges play , t he T AD says, “End of messages.” T o replay a message durin g playback, press REPEA T .
15 RECORDING A MEMO A m emo is a message you can record at the T A D f or yourself or others. Y ou can record memos of up to 60 seco n ds l ong in ea ch line. Memo s are st ored wit h in comi ng mes- sage s , and are rep layed the same w ay (see “P l aying M essag es” on Page 13).
16 USING CALL BREAKTHROUG H If you screen your calls but want to know when calls come in fr o m cert ain people, give them your call breakth r o ugh (CBT) code. When a ca ll er enters t he CBT code dur- ing the outgoing message, the T AD alerts you with a seri es of loud beeps for 35 second s.
17 REMOTE OPERAT ION W hil e you are away from your hom e or office, you can us e a touch-tone phone or a pulse (rotary) phone with a pocket tone dialer to enter your remote opera- tion security code .

20 T ROUBLESHOOTING We do not expect you to have an y problems with your T AD-739, but if you do, try these sugge stions. If the T AD still does no t operate properly , try r e setting it (see “ Resett ing the T AD ”) or take it to your local RadioShack store for assistance.
