9 PREPARATION INSTALLING BATTERIES You ca n power y our scann er with four AA ba tteries (not suppli ed). For the best p er- formance and l ongest life , we recom mend Radi oShack al- kaline bat teries. Or , you can use r echar geable nick el- cadmiu m or nic kel-met al hy- dride batt eries.
10 3. Repla ce the co ver. When BATT.Lo flashes a nd the scanne r beeps every 15 second s, or if the s canner stops o perating proper ly, re- place or rechar ge th e batt er- ies. Warning: D ispose of old bat - teries p romptly and pro perly. Do not burn or bury them.

12 USING V EHICLE BATTERY POWER You can po wer the scanne r from a vehi cle’ s 12V po wer source ( such as cigarette - light er so cket) using a 9V , 300-mA DC adapter and a size H Adaptapl ug adapte r (neithe r supplied) . Both are availa ble a t your local Ra- dioShac k stor e.
13 To charge Ni-C d batteries, remo ve th e pl ug from th e scanne r’s CHARGE ja ck and connec t an AC adapter to the jac k. Warni ng: Do no t connect an adapter to the scanne r’s CHARGE jack if you in stal led non-rec hargeabl e batteries (stand ard, extra-li fe, or alka- line).

26 Moving a Frequency from a Monitor Memory to a Channel Follow these step s to move a freque ncy sto red in a mon- itor m emory t o a pe rmanent channel. 1. Press MANUAL . MAN appears. 2. Enter t he number ( 1– 200 ) for the ch annel wher e yo u wa nt t o sto re the monito r freque ncy .
27 To lock out chann els so the scanne r does not stop for a transm ission on thos e chan- nel s, see “ Locking Out Channels ” on Pa ge 2 8. Notes: • Y ou c an man ually se lect any c hannel in a ban k, even if th e bank is turned off. • Y ou cannot tur n off all ten b anks.
28 SPECIAL FEATURES USING THE KEYLOCK Once you p rogram you r scanne r, you ca n prot ect it from ac cidental program changes by turning on the keylo ck feat ure. When th e keypad is locked, the onl y controls that operate are SCAN , MANUAL , KEYLOCK , VOLUME , and SQUELCH .
29 DELAY Many a gencies use a tw o- way radi o system that h as a period of se vera l secon ds between a qu ery an d a re- ply. T o avoid mis sing a re - ply, y ou can p rogram a 2- second delay in to any cha n- nel or fr equency. When yo ur scanne r stops on a chann el or frequenc y with a pro- gramme d delay, DLY ap- pears .
30 Notes: • Y ou c an manual ly sel ect any c hannel i n a bank , even if the bank is turned off. • Y ou cannot tur n off all banks . One bank is alwa ys ac tive . USING SEARCH SKIP MEMORY You ca n skip s pecif ied fre- quen cies during a lim it or di- rect sea rch.

32 T URNING TH E KEY T ONE ON OR OFF The s canner i s pr eset to sound a tone each ti me you press any of its keys . Follow these st eps to tur n the scan - ner’s ke y tone on or off. 1. If the s canner is tu rned on, turn VOLUME coun - terclo ckwi se until it clicks to tu rn it off.
33 A VOIDING IMAGE FREQUENCIES You might discover on e of your regul ar stations o n another fre- quency tha t is not l isted. I t might be what is know n as an im age frequenc y. For example, you might f ind a s ervice that regular ly uses a frequency of 431.
