6 If the CD-3318 does n ot operate pro p- erly or if the sound weakens or distorts, replace th e batteries. Cautio ns: • Always dispo se of the ol d batter- ies promptly and properly . • Never leave de ad, old, or weak batteries in t h e CD-3318. They can leak chem icals and corrode or damage elect ronic circuits.
7 USING HEADPHONES For private listening, you can c onnect a pair of stereo headphones (not su p- plie d) w ith a 1 / 8 -inch plug. Your local Radio Shac k store carries a wide se- lection of stereo headphon es. To connect the headp hones, insert the headphones ’ 1 / 8 -inch plug into t he PHONES j ack.
8 RADIO OPERA T ION Warnin g : To protect your hearing, set VOLUME to its l owest setti ng before you turn on the radio. Follow these steps to us e the radio. 1. Set RADIO.CD OFF to RADIO to turn on the radio. T he POW ER indi ca tor lig h ts. 2. Set BAND to FM or AM .
9 CD PLA YER OPER A TI O N LOADING A CD 1. Set RADIO.CD OFF to CD . T he POWER ind icator lights, and dISC appears in t he display . 2. Press PUSH OPEN on the CD compart ment cover . The CD com- partment opens. 3. P lace a CD in the co mpartment with the label facing up.
10 Warning: Y our CD-3318 CD player has a wide dynam ic range. If you turn the volume too hi gh during the low v o lume sections of a program, y ou might dam age your hearing during sudd en loud sect ions. 3. Press E-BASS t o enhanc e the bass sound s whil e playing the CD.

15 CASSE TTE P LA YER OPE RA TION Your CD-3318 uses a dual -cassette deck syst em , whic h lets you play cas- sette tapes from either of two decks and rec ord from a v ariety of sources. LOADING A CASSETTE TA P E Note: T ake up any slack in t h e tape by turning the casset te’s hub with a pe n- cil .
16 • T o rapidly wind the t ape forwa rd or backward, pres s FA S T - F or REWIND . The cassett e deck a uto matical l y st o ps at t he end of the tape. • Be sure the cas sette player i s stopped before f ast-forwarding or rewinding a cassette tape.
17 • The CD-3318’s Automat ic Level Control (ALC) automatically adjusts the rec ording level. VOL- UME and TON E hav e no effect on recording. • T ape quality greatly affects the quality of the recording. We rec- ommen d regular length (60- or 90- minute) cas sette tapes.
