Getting Started 1 Section 1: Getting Started THANK Y OU… ...for choosing an LX400 Color Label Printer . The LX400 Printer will print razor -sharp text and barcodes, vibrant colors, and even stunning photo -realistic photographs directly onto rolls of labels, card stock and fan-fold stock.

Hardware and Software Settings 5 Section 2: Hardwar e and Software Setup A. INST ALLING THE PC SOFTWARE The Installer Disc has a menu that will guide you through the process of setting up your duplicator . Please refer to the following for more information on each step: 1.
6 Hardware and Software Settings C. CONNECTING POWER 1. Locate the power adapter supplied with your printer . 2. Place one end of the adapter cord into the power port on the rear panel of the printer . 3. Plug the power cord of the adapter into an available wall outlet or surge protect- ing power strip.
Hardware and Software Settings 7 Select "Install the software automatically" and click Next . Y ou may see a notice like the one shown here stating that the Printer has not passed W indows Logo T esting. Click Continue Anyway to continue installing the printer driver for your Publisher .

Hardware and Software Settings 9 3. Remove any shipping tape from your label stock roll to ensure that it can unroll freely , making certain that no adhesive portion is exposed. It is important to note that any exposed adhesive surface can attach itself the inner workings of the print mechanism and cause a media jam.
10 Hardware and Software Settings 5. Place the leading edge of the label stock between the throat guide and the side of the printer . 6. F eed the label stock further into the printer until it senses the label and automatically feeds it through the printer .
Hardware and Software Settings 11 Circular Labels If you are using Circular Labels you must adjust the Stock sensor to correspond with the ver y top of the label where the circles are closest together .
12 Hardware and Software Settings T o adjust the sensor position use a pen to move the slide bar to the correct postion. G. USING F AN-FOLD LABEL ST OCK It is possible to use fan-fold label stock by feeding it through the fan-fold slot in the the back of the printer .
Hardware and Software Settings 13 H. INST ALLING THE INK CARTRIDGE Y our printer has a built-in ink tracking system. This system is designed to warn you if your ink cartridge is low on ink. This ensures your labels will print properly and that the printer can create large batches of labels unattended and worr y-free.
14 Hardware and Software Settings 11. P ush cartridge cover downward until it snaps in place. 12. Click OK on your screen to indicate the new cartridge is now installed.
Hardware and Software Settings 15 c. Cut or fold a 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper in half length wise so that it is no wider than 4.25 inches. Pull the the label stock guide all the way out and lock it in place using the instructions in Section 2G.
16 Printing Using a PC Section 3: P rinting Using a PC A. USING NICELABEL Y our printer ships with a basic version of Niceware's NiceLabel software. This easy-to-use software is designed to allow you to create full color labels with text and barcodes quickly and simply .
Printing Using a PC 17 b. Select your printer . This should be the Color Label Printer . Click Finish . 3. Now you will see your label in the Document W indow . Y ou can start to design your label using T ools from the T ool Box. First, we will use the T e xt T ool.
18 Printing Using a PC 4. Now , insert a barcode. a. Click the Barcode T ool Icon from the T oolbox. Y ou will now have a Barcode Cursor that can be positioned anywhere within the Document W indow . P osition your cursor in the general area where you wish your barcode to print and click to start entering your barcode information.
Printing Using a PC 19 b. The first screen in the Barcode W izard will allow you to select the type of Barcode you wish to print. Y ou can also enter the data to be used in the barcode. F or this we are doing a simple UPC-A barcode. F or more information on other types of barcodes, please see Section 3B.
20 Printing Using a PC 5. Now insert a graphic . Click on the Graphics T ool Icon in the toolbox. Y ou will now see a Graphics Cursor . Drag the cursor to the general area where you wish to place the graphic and click to get an Open dialog box. Y ou will be prompted to browse for graphic files.
Printing Using a PC 21 b. There are other tools at your disposal to align the object or add shapes. On the right side of the screen you will see alignment tools so you can align the objects on your label in relation to each other .

Y ou will now have a Barcode Cursor that can be positioned anywhere within the Document W indow . P osition your cursor in the general area where you wish your barcode to print and click to start entering your barcode information.
Printing Using a PC 23 iii. This contains four tabs, General , Check Digit , Human Readable and Details . iv . The General T ab allows you to choose the appropriate barcode type from the A vailable barcodes : menu. Y ou can choose one- or two -dimensional barcodes.
24 Printing Using a PC When you change the barcode dimension directly from the screen by moving the drag handle, the changed dimension will also appear in this dialog box. Some of the barcode types also allow the definition of Narrow- to -wide bar ratio.
Printing Using a PC 25 C. PRINTER DRIVER SETTINGS (PC) Once the printer driver has been successfully installed, you will need to setup the driver with the appropriate print options. Refer to the following steps to change or verify your default printer driver preferences.
26 Printing Using a PC NO TE on PC Settings : Most applications allow you to change these same printer driver options from their "Print" and/or "Printer Setup" screens. Some applications such as NiceLabel save your settings with the label, others use settings only for the current print job just sent to the printer .
Printing Using a PC 27 Color Matc hing Best for Graphics mode is best used for graphical images where accurate color reproduction is not as essential. Images printed in this mode will look more vibrant because more ink is being used to produce them. However , printing images of people may produce skin tones that have a reddish tint.
28 Printing Using a PC Clean/Change Car tridge & Check Ink Lev els Click this setting to reveal a Properties button. Click Properties and you will see the color ink level as well as buttons allowing you to either clean or change your ink cartridge.
Printing Using a PC 29 Change Car tridge Click the Change Cartridge button to move the cartridge into position for easy access for replacement. F or more infor mation on this see Section 2H. When installing cartridge you will be prompted to align your cartridge as described earlier in this section.
30 Printing Using a PC Output Mode Do not present (use with R ewinder). The label stock does not move after the last label is printed. This means that part of the last label printed is still in the printer . This should be used only if you have a label rewinder attached.
Printing Using a PC 31 Left Mar gin Offset This will be factory calibrated. If fine tuning is needed, increase this setting to move the image right on the label; decrease this setting to move the image to the left on the label. The unit of measure is 0.
32 Printing Using a Macintosh Section 4: P rinting Using a Macintosh NO TE: Y ou must set the Printer and P age Setup by clicking on these buttons each time you print. Y ou must perfor m these steps each time you print even if what you see on the preview scr een appears cor rect.
Printing Using a Macintosh 33 3. The printer settings screen defaults to Copies and P ages. Click the drop down arrow to change the screen to Label Printer Settings.
34 Printing Using a Macintosh 5. Click Print to return to the print preview screen. Now click P age Setup to change the label size set in the printer driver . Y ou must click the P age Setup button ever y time you print even if the preview screen looks correct.
Printing Using a Macintosh 35 7. Click on the drop down arrow to select a predefined label size or create a custom size by clicking Manage Custom Sizes . F or this example there is a 4x3 predefined size. If your label is on the list choose it, click OK and move on to step 10.
36 Printing Using a Macintosh 9. If you have created a custom size you will need to choose it again here by clicking the drop down arrow and choosing the custom size. Click OK . 10. Y ou are now ready to print your label. First, check the orientation.

38 Printing Using a Macintosh D. PRINTER DRIVER SETTINGS (MA C) T o find Printer Driver Settings on Mac: 1. Click Print from within any printing application. The following screen will appear: 2. Click the Copies and P ages drop down ar row . Choose Label Printer Settings.
Printing Using a Macintosh 39 Print Quality There are 4 levels of print quality in the driver . The lower the Quality , the faster the print. Quality 1 provides the fastest print available while Quality 4 provides the best photo quality .
40 Printing Using a Macintosh Config. Utility Click on the Config. Utility to access the following screen. A description of each setting on this screen is below . Clean Car tridge If it has been more than 48 hours since your last print or if your print quality has deteriorated with bands or lines it is recommended that you clean the cartridge.
Printing Using a Macintosh 41 Car tridge Alignment Cartridge alignment will align the Color Cartridge for bidirec- tional printing and calibrate the printer to each individual cartridge. Y ou will automatically be prompted to perfor m this alignment each time you install a new cartridge.
42 Printing Using a Macintosh T ear Off Position If Output Mode (described later in this section) is set to Present, the printer will present your labels over the T ear Bar for easy removal.
Printing Using a Macintosh 43 Sensor Type Sensor T ype refers to the method the printer will use to detect the print starting position for each label. If you are using standard die-cut labels or Through-hole label material where a hole is punched through each label for alignment purposes use the Through-hole/Die- Cut setting.

SOL VING REGISTRA TION PROBLEMS Image is V ertically Offset The LX400 decides where to start printing by detecting the start of die-cut label, detecting a black mark on the back or detecting a thru-hole that cor responds to the start of the label.
T r oubleshooting 45 2. Nonstandard / Non-translucent Backing Material . T est the unit with the label sample material that came with the unit. If it prints correctly , your label stock may not be compatible. The label sensor needs to see the difference between a label and a backing material by seeing through the label stock for light variations.
46 T r oubleshooting Note: Often times a space on the right (printers lef t) side indicates a margin around the label that is not being accounted for . The printer is factory calibrated for a 2mm margin. A larger mar gin around the label will cause a right (printers left) side space.
T r oubleshooting 47 B. CREA TING A FULL BLEED PRINT 1. If you are having trouble making the image cover the entire label, first make sure the image is printing at least as big as the label size you have selected.
48 T r oubleshooting C. CLEARING A LABEL JAM If there is a label jam in the printer mechanism first attempt to remove the jam by opening the cover and removing the jam from the printer feed output area. If the jam can not be located, it is possible to remove a cover over the feed input area.
T r oubleshooting 49 E. CLEANING THE INK CARTRIDGE It may be necessary to clean the ink cartridge nozzles if you notice reduced print quality , or if you suspect an cartridge nozzle has become slightly dried out or clogged. If you are having print quality problems, follow the steps below: 1.
