8 A ssem bly Tool s re q uired for assemb l y Fork lift or hoi st wit h str aps/sl i ngs 14mm wrench 4mm and 8mm hex wrenches The La the sh ould be di scon nected fro m power during assembl y. 1. Rem o v e any screws or straps that hold the Lathe part s to t he pal let , and rem o v e protec tiv e wrappi ng.

10 3. Instal l the out er co l lar and ti ghten the set scr e w. 4. The guard c an be piv oted to one of two posit ions: Oper ating m ode (show n o n fr ont cov er) or t ilted back f or stoc k loadi ng (shown in F igure 6). 5. P ull up on the spri ng pin, and begin t ilti ng the guard, then release the spri ng pin.
11 For outboard tur ning, where the headstoc k is m o v ed to t he opposi te end o f the Lathe t o accom modate l arge bow l blank s , you c an (1) m ount the 18” bed ex tension t o the three l ower holes on the Lathe f ra m e, and (2) m ount a v er t ical ext ens i on post [opt ional access or y, stock num ber 3520B- 310] to t he tool rest base.
12 1. Mark your ho l e cent ers ( 2” center s ) a l ong the l ength of a 2x 6. Place t he holes so that th e to ps of th e d ow els w ill be e ven w ith th e tops of t he ledges on the Lat he.
13 Repair or repl ace a da m aged or worn cord im m e di at el y . Th e L ath e w ill operate on si ngle pha s e or three phase, 230 v olt power suppl y. The Lat he shoul d be connect ed to a dedi ca t ed c i rcuit . Make sure the char acteri stic s of your power s uppl y mat ch the speci fi ca t ions on the m o t or pl a te of the Lathe.
14 To rem o v e headstock, t ailstock or toolr es t base from the bed, unscre w and remov e eit her o f the stop bol ts (B, Fi gure 14). Af ter r e- m ounti ng these i t e m s on the Lathe, re- i nsert the stop bolt.
15 Liv e Cen ter an d Cone The liv e cent er cone, s ho wn in Fi gure 17, scre ws cl ockwise onto the t hreads of the l ive center body. To r emove t he cone f ro m the liv e center, f irst insert the liv e center pin t hrough the hol e in t he liv e center body as shown i n Figure 17.
16 3. T o remove a spur center or liv e center , fir s t rem o v e the workpiec e f rom t he Lat he. Insert the knoc kout rod ( Figur e 20) through t he hole i n the handw h eel and f irml y tap t he tapered end of t he s pur cent er.
17 2. Instal l t he co m parat or spur cent er into the headstoc k bracket , by lif t i ng up on the spring pi n and i nserti ng the comparat or spur center until its poi nt i s about ev en wit h the point o f t he s pur center i n the head s t ock spindl e.
18 Sh eave and B elt Align me nt The m ot or and spindl e sheav es are al i gned w i t h each other at the f act ory, but if any s ervi ce i s perf ormed t hat a ff ects the i r a li gn m ent i t i s very im portant that t hey be reali gned.
19 1. Disconnec t Lathe fr om power s o ur c e. 2. Loosen the piv ot lock handl e (A, Fi gure 25) and li ft up the tension han dle (B , Fi gure 25) to ra ise the mo tor. 3. T ight en the piv o t lock handle (A, Fi gure 25) to hol d the m otor i n the rai s ed po s i tion.
20 (B) Fo rw ard/Reverse When turning wi t h a face pl ate, make sure b oth set screw s on the face pl ate are tig ht (see F igure 22) b efore reversin g the spi n d le. Failu re to comply may cause t he face pl ate to sp in lo ose fro m the spi ndle.
21 4. Bed ways; keep c lean, u se steel wool to rem ove any rust spots, and appl y paste wax to prev ent buil dup of rust and fi n i shes . 5. Tool s uppor t; u s e a mill f ile t o re m o v e nicks and dings. 6. Spi ndle tapers; should be c lean and f ree of dust and chi ps f or proper seati ng o f tapers.
22 Carbon steel tool s c an o v erheat easil y and should be cool ed f requent ly. If the edge t urns blue, it has lost its tem per and should be gr ound past the bl ue area. High- s peed steel t ools are not as li kely to ov erheat, but can be dam aged if all ow ed t o get red hot.
23 7. Suppor t the workpi ece w hi le br ingi ng the tail stock i nto positi on about 1” away f rom the end of the w or kpiec e. Lock t he tail stock to t he bed. 8. Adv ance t he tailstoc k spindl e with t he handwheel in order t o seat t he liv e center int o t he w or kpiece.
24 5. Once t he w or kpiec e is roughed down to a cyli nder, sm ooth it w i th a lar ge s kew. K eep the skew handl e perpendic ul ar to the spindl e and use only t he center t h i rd of the cutt ing .
25 Face Plat e and Bow l Turn ing Face pl ate t urning is norm ally done on the inboar d s i de of the headstock o v er the bed. Larger w or kpiec es m ust be turned o n the outboard si de (rem ove t ail stock and t ool support base, and m o v e headstoc k to oppo s i te end of bed).
26 Distortion Dist orti on i s a pr oblem associat ed wit h turni ng green wood. I t w ill va r y fro m one type of w ood t o the nex t. Typically , f ruitwoods tend t o di s tort m ore t han others. It a l s o v aries with t he t ime o f year t he tree w a s cut and ho w the l ogs are stored.
