2 DO NO T : • Do not tur n on slopes unless necessar y , and then, turn slowly and gradually do wnhill, if possible. • Do not mow near drop-offs , ditches, or embankments. The mower could suddenly turn ov er if a wheel is ov er the edge of a cliff or ditch, or if an edge cav es in.

11 OPERA TION The operation of any tractor can result in f oreign objects thro wn into the eyes, which can result in severe e ye dam age . Al ways wear saf ety glass es or e ye shields while operating your tractor or per for m ing any adjustments or repairs.
12 OPERA TION T O OPERA TE ON HILLS W ARNING: Do not drive up or down hills with slopes greater than 15° and do not drive across an y slope. • Choose the slow est speed before starting up or down hills. • Av oid stopping or changing speed on hills.
13 OPERA TION T O ST ART ENGINE (See Fig. 5) When star ting the engine for the fi rst time or if the engine has run out of fuel, it will take e xtra cranking time to mo ve fuel from the tank to the engine. • Be sure freewheel control is in the transmission en gaged position.

15 MULCHING MO WING TIPS IMPORT ANT : FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEP MOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUIL T -UP GRASS AND TRASH. CLEAN AFTER EA CH USE. • The spe cial mulch ing b lade will recut the grass clip- pings many times and reduce them in size so that as they f all onto the lawn they will disperse into the g rass and not be noticed.

17 MAINTENANCE BLADE REMO V AL (See Fig. 12) • Raise mower to highest position to allow access to bla d e s. • Remov e blade bolt, lock washer and fl at wa sh er s e cur ing bla d e. • Install new or reshar pened blade with trailing edge up tow ards deck as sho wn.
18 CLEAN AIR INT AKE/COOLING AREAS T o insure proper cooling, make sure the gr ass screen, cooling fi ns, and other external surf aces of the engine are kept clean at all times . Every 100 hours of operation (more often under e xtremely dusty , dir ty conditions), remov e the blow er housing and other cooling shrouds.
19 MAINTENANCE MUFFLER Inspect and replace corroded muffl er and spar k arrester (if equipped) as it could create a fi re hazard and/or dam- age. SP ARK PLUGS Replace spark plugs at the beginning of each mowing season or after e very 100 hours of operation, whiche ver occurs fi rst.

24 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS REPLA CING BA TTER Y (See Figs. 29 and 30) W ARNING: Do not shor t battery ter- mi nals by allowing a wrench or an y other object to contact both terminals at the same time. Bef ore connect- ing battery , remove metal brace- lets, wristwatch bands, rings, etc.
25 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS T O REMO VE HOOD AND GRILL ASSEMBL Y (See Fig. 31) • Raise hood. • Unsnap headlight wire connector . • Stand in front of tractor . Grasp hood at sides , tilt toward engine and lift off of tractor . • T o replace, re verse abo ve procedure .
26 ST ORA GE Immediately prepare your tr actor for stor age at the end of the season or if the tractor will not be used f or 30 da ys or more. W ARNING: Never store the trac tor with gas o line in the tank inside a building where fumes may reac h an open fl ame or spark.
27 PROBLEM CA USE CORRECTION TR OUBLESHOO TING POINTS Will not start 1. Out of fuel. 1. Fill fuel tank. 2. Engine not “CHOKED” proper ly . 2. See “T O ST ART ENGINE” in Operation section. 3. Engine fl ooded. 3. Wait se ver al minutes before attempting to start.
28 PROBLEM CA USE CORRECTION TR OUBLESHOO TING POINTS Engine continues to run 1. F aulty operator-saf ety presence control system. 1. Check wiring, switches and connections . If not when operator leaves seat corrected, contact an authorized ser vice center/ with attachment clutc h department.
